6 RBHS 2017 SUMMER SCHOOL Online registration is required at Riverside Brookfield High School offers summer school in a limited number of subjects. Each course is taught according to the same curriculum offered during the normal school year. Course enrollment numbers, as well as staffing, will determine whether we cancel classes or offer additional classes. REGISTRATION: Online Summer School registration will be held from March 7 - May 27 for all academic offerings. To register for Academic Courses, Workshops, Camps and Athletic Camps, please refer to Currently enrolled students will be given priority for registration. *The U.S. Government course will be capped at 32 students. Registration for this course should be completed online and will be on a first come first serve basis. If you register without payment, or pay without registering, your student cannot participate in the Summer Program. Chromebooks for online registration will be available in the Business Office for use if you do not have access to a computer. FEES: Fees are listed per course. If you received a fee waiver this school year, it remains in effect through the summer and you are able to take an academic course or academic workshop at no cost. Fees can be paid for online using the Rev Track system at or through the Business Office. *If fees are not paid for at the time of registration, a student s registration is not complete and will not be processed until payment is received from the Business Office. REFUNDS: If the section is not offered due to insufficient enrollment or staff availability, a full refund will be issued. No other refunds will be offered. If a student has to be removed from class for any reason at any time during the course, including on the last day of class, no refunds or credits will be issued.

7 SUMMER SCHOOL PROCEDURES FOR ACADEMIC COURSES ATTENDANCE (18 days - 4 hours per day for credit courses) If a student is unable to attend summer school classes because of illness or an emergency, the parent must report the absence, along with a reason by 9 a.m. on the day of the absence. You will need to call the Attendance Office at Messages may be recorded on an answering machine during the hours the office is closed (nonbusiness hours). Because of the intensified nature of the summer school program, only one day of summer school may be missed for any reason prior to the student being dropped and no credit or refund being issued. This includes absences due to illness. A family vacation is not an acceptable excuse for an absence. No incompletes will be issued, nor will any refunds will be given. Students must enter through Door A. If students arrive earlier than 15 minutes before class time, they must wait in the area at Door A. All students are to exit the building within 15 minutes of the end of class unless they are under direct adult supervision. Students are not permitted to be in any other location of the building other than where their classes are being held. A student will be dropped with a W under the following conditions: a. Any unexcused absences (Note: not returning to class from any scheduled class break will count as an unexcused absence and will result in a student being dropped from the class with no credit or refund.) b. More than one (1) excused absence per session of summer school. c. Being tardy to class more than two times per semester, including being tardy after any scheduled break. DISCIPLINE: All school policies, noted in the Student Handbook will be enforced during summer school. Any violations may warrant disciplinary action being taken or dismissal from the summer program without a tuition refund or class credit, including and up to the last day of attendance. TRANSPORTATION: Students are expected to provide their own transportation. Parking is allowed only on Rockefeller Road on a first-come, first-serve basis and may be limited due to construction. If parking is not available, students will need to find legal parking on their own. *Parking on Zoo property is not permitted. BICYCLES: Chain bicycles to bike racks located outside door A. SPORT CAMPS: Students in summer school may participate in camps, but only if such participation does not impact their daily and complete attendance in their summer school classes. Academic programs require complete attendance in order for the student to receive credit. Therefore, early release for camps will be not permitted. RB believes in students with diverse interests; however, academics must always come first.

10 This course in United States Government, which is required for graduation, concentrates on the information United States citizens need to know to maintain a democratic system and influence officials when they have concerns. The focus is on the kind of people who attain positions of power in the United States political system, what roles they are expected to follow, and what influences their decisions on policies. The national level of politics is studied including presidents, congressmen, Supreme Court justices, and some of the federal bureaucracy. The part played by lobbyists for special interest groups, public opinion polling, and the news media s influence on people s political attitudes and behavior are also studied. The state of Illinois requirements relating to instruction on the U.S. Constitution, Illinois Constitution, and flag usage are met in this course SESSION 2 Credit Recovery (.5 or 1.0 credit) June 29 July 25 Room: 157 Monday Friday Fee: $200 for 1 credit 8:00 am -12:00 pm $100 for.5 credit This course provides any credit deficient student with an opportunity to make-up failed courses through a computer-based online program at Riverside Brookfield High School. ACADEMIC WORKSHOPS Online registration is required at Bridge to RB (Incoming Freshmen) June 12 June 16 Rooms: 108,110, and 112 Monday Friday Fee: $100 (includes books) 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Eligible Students: Incoming freshman students who have registered for classes at RBHS The Bridge Program will offer incoming freshmen the opportunity to excel in their transition from 8 th grade to high school. The topics that will be covered include: specific and essential high school math skills, goal-setting and study skills, scientific method, and skills associated with close reading. The goal is to provide students with a head start on the high school experience. Bridge to AP English Language July 10 July 12 Room: 114 Monday Wednesday Fee: $60 9:00 am 12:00 pm Eligible Students: Students enrolled in AP English Language and Composition for the school year. One of the biggest challenges for students in AP Language and Composition is identifying the author's purpose and constructing their own written arguments. This workshop will prepare students for the rigors of AP Language and Composition with direct instruction on identifying the author's purpose and how the purpose is achieved. We will examine the types of essays on the AP test, practice building their own arguments and study three types of AP prompts: close reading, argumentative and synthesis.

11 Bridge to AP English Literature July 17 July 19 Room: 114 Monday Wednesday Fee: $60 9:00 am 12:00 pm Eligible Students: Students enrolled in AP English Literature and Composition for the school year. One of the biggest challenges for students in AP Literature is the breadth and depth of poetry analysis that is essential to success in the class and on the AP exam. This workshop will prepare students for the rigors of AP poetry reading with direct instruction on the types of poems on the AP test, reading poetry with an AP lens, and writing about poetry using AP prompts. It is open to any student who is registered for AP Literature. Bridge to AP German June 6 June 8 Room: 114 Monday Wednesday Fee: $60 9:00 am 12:00 pm Eligible Students: Students enrolled in German III or AP German class for the school year. Students will discover ways to prepare themselves for the level 3 and/or Advanced Placement class for the upcoming school year. Bridge to AP Science June 12 June 14 Room: 114 Monday Wednesday Fee: $60 9:00 am 12:00 pm Eligible Students: Students enrolled in any AP Science for the school year. Get a jump on the skills required for a successful Advanced Placement Science experience. This short course will focus on scientific inquiry, lab design and analysis, and general skills necessary for a college level science course. Bridge to Honors Pre-Calculus June 26 June 28 Room: 114 Monday Wednesday Fee: $60 9:00 am 12:00 pm Eligible Students: Students enrolled in Honors Pre-Calculus for the school year. Get a jump on the skills required for a successful Honors Pre-Calculus experience. This short course will focus on completion of the summer packet along with an opportunity to experience a digital learning environment. Bridge to Spanish 2 June 19 June 21 Rooms:114 Monday Wednesday Fee: $60 9:00 am 12:00 pm Eligible Students: Students enrolled in Spanish 2 for the school year. Bridge to Spanish 2 offers incoming Spanish 2 students an opportunity to refine their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills after Spanish 1 and before moving on to Spanish 2. This course will focus on reviewing the main grammatical and vocabulary concepts from Spanish 1 and will allow students to revisit these important topics before beginning in their Spanish 2 course.

12 CAP (College Admissions Preparation) July 17 July 21 Room: 113 Monday Friday Fee: $100 9 am 12 pm Eligible Students: Any incoming junior students and senior students planning to retake the ACT. Gain familiarity with the ACT test, learn some test-taking skills, and the importance of pacing for this college preparatory assessment. This class is not intended as a replacement for CAP during the school year. Summer Driver Education registration will take place Wednesday, May 10, in the Little Theatre at 6:00 p.m. At that time any student planning to take summer school driver education (any phase) may sign up for classes. Applications will be provided at registration. Registration will be done in chronological order according to birth date. Checks should be made payable to RBHS and must be submitted at the time of registration. If you are registering for a behind-the-wheel class you must have your driver s permit WITH YOU or departmental approval at the time of registration. 13 ACADEMIC CAMPS Online registration is required at Band Orientation for Freshmen and New Members Director: James Baum June 12 June 23 Room: 154D Monday Friday Fee: $50 12:00 pm 3:00 pm Eligible Students: Students new to the band program at RBHS This class is strongly recommended for all incoming freshmen and any other students new to our band program. These sessions will provide a comprehensive introduction to the RB Band program with focus on concert music and fundamental marching techniques. Students will need their instruments and tennis shoes. Students should attend as many sessions as possible. 14 Eligible Students: Incoming senior students Here s a chance to make extensive progress on your college application, so you don t have to stress about it in the fall. Camp College offers students entering their senior year the opportunity to gain valuable insights into the college search and application process. An English teacher and counselor will cover college search and selection topics including: Using Technology to Research Colleges, Making the Most of College Visits and Interviews, Completing the Application, Financial Aid / CSS Profile / FAFSA, and The Common Application. Students will develop a list of potential college options and create a college essay draft. One day may include a college tour. Summer Television Workshop Instructor: Gary Prokes June 5 9 Room: 251 Monday Friday Fee: $25 Session I: 9:00 10:30 am or Max. 15 students per session Session II: 1:00 2:30 pm Eligible Students: Open to all incoming freshman students that are registered to attend RBHS in the fall The Summer Television Workshop offers students an opportunity to experience the fast-paced world of television production. Students will learn how to operate TV studio cameras, audio and video mixers, graphic generators, and field cameras. The five-day workshop takes a hands on real world approach and culminates with the class producing a TV show taped for broadcast on RBTV. Each Session is limited to 15 students. Eligible students are those registered to attend RB in the fall.

17 2017 SUMMER CAMPS GIRLS BADMINTON SKILLS CAMP Head Coach- James Tsenes Asst Coach-Miguel Romero High School Girls (Grades 9 12 Fall 17) Location: Main Gym June 5-9 and June from 12:00pm-1:30 pm Fee: $100 Grade School Girls (Grades 6-8 th grade Fall 17) June 5-9 and June from 1:30pm-3:00pm Attendance at this camp is highly suggested for all potential or returning Badminton players. The camp is designed to enhance skills developed during the season, but also to lay the foundation for the season. Fundamental skills, strategy, and development will be stressed during this camp. This camp will also be a great way for any 6 th, 7 th, or 8 th grader to be introduced to badminton. Campers will receive instruction from the coaching staff as well our returning varsity players. All campers will receive instruction from the Riverside Brookfield Badminton coaches. All campers will receive a t-shirt. The bus will leave no later than 12:30." The high school camp is a six hour group lesson over three days that touches on every aspect of the game. The class is tailored to the needs of every golfer. Every aspect of the game is covered: Full swing, chipping, putting, pitching and sand play. Each player will receive a video analysis of their swing. The week concludes with a 9 hole playing lesson with the coaches. This is the perfect lead up to the high school season! A strong emphasis will be placed on the short game and putting. The camp will be divided into two sessions. Players who are new to the team, or have not competed in a varsity contest will meet at Fresh Meadows Driving Range for the morning session. Girls who have competed in a varsity match will participate in the afternoon session.
