1 FLORENCE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 1 MINUTES OF GOVERNING BOARD WORK SESSION AND REGULAR BOARD MEETING April 11, 2017 Work Session - Call to Order - 6:00 P.M. The Work Session was called to order by Board President Denise Guenther at 6:00 p.m. in the San Tan Foothills High School cafeteria, 1255 W. Silverdale Road, San Tan Valley, AZ Roll Call Board members present were: Governing Board President, Denise Guenther, Governing Board Vice-President, Steve Johnson, Board Member Bob Dailey and Board Member Katrina Solis. Board Member Jim Thomas was excused. Also in attendance was Mr. Chris Knutsen, Interim-Superintendent. Possible correction of minutes from the March 7, 2017 Work Study Session/Regular Board Meeting and the March 1, 2017 Special Board Meeting/Executive Session. There were no corrections made to the minutes. Possible Agenda Reorganization Mr. Knutsen mentioned that no items needed to be reorganized on the agenda. Informational Items There were no informational items for discussion. Agenda Item Clarifications Item 16.1 Mr. Tony Jimenez, Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services, addressed the Governing Board on possible discussion and action on Comprehensive Employee Benefits Package for fiscal year He was joined by Cynthia Walter, RHU, REBC Area President: A Division of Gallagher Benefit Services, Inc. Beverly Myers, Director of Business and Finance, addressed the Governing Board regarding: Item 16.2 Temporary Construction Easement and Agreement with Pinal County Public Works Department Hunt Highway Phase 4 Project. Item 16.3 Blackboard Master Agreement for Products and Services. Item 16.4 OCM Recycle West Agreement

2 Item Interim-Superintendent, Mr. Knutsen introduced new administrative staff members to the Governing Board and members of the public. Regular Board Meeting Call to Order - Governing Board President, Denise Guenther called the Regular Board Meeting to order at 6:31 p.m. Adoption of the Agenda Member Bob Dailey moved, Member Steve Johnson seconded that the Governing Board adopt the Agenda of the April 11, 2017 Work Study Session/Regular Board Meeting. The motion carried 4 0. Pledge of Allegiance to The Flag Mrs. Guenther led the Pledge of Allegiance to The Flag. The National Anthem was played by the Skyline Ranch K-8 band. Governing Board Member Reports Mrs. Solis stated that with attending the Cheer competitions and a few of the basketball games, she wanted to thank everyone, parents, teachers, students and administration for all of the wonderful school spirit that is happening throughout the District. She wanted to applaud and thank everyone for their efforts and especially the parents for being so active on a daily basis. Mr. Dailey began by stating that as the final couple of months come into play, he requested that all of the administrators, coaches, and art, choir and band teachers let the Board know of any activities that are happening throughout the District. He also congratulated all of the new directors, principals and assistant principals and is looking forward to a great school year, next year. Mr. Johnson stated that he just attended the Arizona School Boards Association, Equity Conference and commented on a really exciting program called AVID which is coming to our District next year. He is looking forward to the results this program will bring to the students of our District. Mr. Johnson continued to explain that this program will bring some changes with the soft-skill development of students and the ability to expand their post-secondary opportunities dramatically. Mrs. Guenther hoped everyone enjoyed Spring Break and stated that we are now in the home stretch of this school year. She said that the K-8 s have been testing this past week for the AzMerit and the High Schools will begin next week. Mrs. Guenther urged parents to make sure their students attend school every day. Superintendent s Report Mr. Knutsen stated that he also attended the Equity Summit and that there was a presentation by the Nogales School District, regarding a High School there that is doing

3 an outstanding job on preparing their students for careers, their graduation rates and their high school in general. He continued by saying that he looked at Florence Unified high schools and that we are doing many of the same things. We are building this district by design, and as we move forward in the next few years we are going to have three (3) silos at each high school and the K-8 schools will feed those silos. The three (3) silos are: The International Baccalaureate program at Florence High School, the AP Capstone and AVID program at San Tan Foothills, and the STEM Diploma Program at Poston Butte High School. Florence Unified has three (3) rigorous programs that we are going to feed from the K-8 up and it s all going to be very exciting! Mr. Jimenez was invited to the podium by Interim-Superintendent, Mr. Knutsen, to introduce Skyline Ranch K-8 principal, Mr. Toby Haugen who introduced his administrative team, Mr. Jim Bock, Mr. Elwin Longnion, and Ms. Jaclyn Wood and then took the time to recognize all of the Skyline staff that was in attendance at the meeting. Mr. Haugen then introduced the Student Council President of Skyline Ranch K-8, Aurora Dargle. Aurora gave a heartwarming speech about all of the wonderful things happening at Skyline K-8. Mr. Haugen then introduced Skyline Ranch K-8 s, Volunteer of the Month. Volunteer of the Month Anastasia Aoyagi Our Volunteer of the Month has spent many hours over the last two (2) years as part of our PTSO. She can be seen Friday s in front of our school selling school spirit items. Many mornings you will see her making copies or working on bulletin boards. She is positive and always willing to help if she can. Classified Employee of the Month Virginia Hernandez When asked to describe this classified staff member the words, friendly, hard worker, positive attitude, and humble were most used. I was giving a tour to a family the day before the 3 rd quarter started. As I opened the door to the main hallway, a little girl stopped and said, WOW! The floors look like glass! As we continued through the building, the parents continually commented on how beautiful the campus looked and how clean everything was. The appearance of our building is something we are extremely proud of and that is because of the great custodial crew we have and the leader of the crew, Virginia Hernandez. Certified Employee of the Month Mr. Jack Healey This is what our students have to say about our certified staff member of the month. He s helpful, nice, kind, generous, teaches us through discussion, funny, one of the best teachers s I ve ever had. Our staff recognizes him as a man who is not afraid of being silly in assemblies, who attends the Quinceañeras, high school games, and graduations of his former students. I recognized a small portion of the impact he has had on our community during our 10 th Anniversary celebration last year. Although some of it may have been the antenna and TV he brought from home to check in on the Cubbies in their pursuit of the MLB championship, most of people that filled his classroom were there to talk to him, share what they were doing after high school, and reminisce about their time at Skyline Ranch K-8. These are just a few of the reasons our staff selected Mr. Jack Healey as our certified staff member of the month.

4 Assistant Superintendent Mr. Tony Jimenez then introduced Mr. Paul Hatch, Principal of Walker Butte Leadership School to the podium who spoke on behalf of his Volunteer of the Month, Sheri Kuhl, Classified Employee of the Month, Erin Zaragoza and the Certified Employee of the Month, Jenifer Newman. Assistant Superintendent, Mr. Tony Jimenez, then announced the Students of the Month. Interim-Superintendent, Mr. Knutsen, along with Assistant Superintendent, Mr. Adam Leckie personally recognized and shook hands with each student while they placed the medals on each of them. Call to the Public There were no calls to the public. Approval of Consent Agenda The Governing Board approved the Agenda of the April 11, 2017 Board Meeting with the exception of Agenda item: Specifically, the excel spreadsheet Admin recommendations for rehire, inadvertently left off Mr. Jeff Cox, who will be the Director of K-12 Athletics and Community Education. Member Bob Dailey moved; Member Katrina Solis seconded that the Governing Board approve items #14.2 through #14.12 on the consent agenda. The motion carried 4-0. Agenda item 16.4 OCM Recycle West Agreement. Member Steve Johnson moved; Member Bob Dailey seconded that the Governing Board approve the OCM Recycle West Agreement. The motion carried 4-0. Agenda item 16.5 Food Service Meal Plan for Member Bob Dailey moved; Member Katrina Solis seconded that the Governing Board approve the Food Service Meal Plan for FY The motion carried 4-0. Items for Future Agendas Governing Board Member, Bob Dailey requested an update on Graduation at the next Board meeting. Next Regular Board Meeting

7 The next Regular Board Meeting will be May 9, 2017 in the Poston Butte High School gymnasium located at N. Gantzel Road, San Tan Valley, AZ The Work Study Session will begin at 6:00 p.m. and the Regular Board Meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. Adjournment It was moved by Member Katrina Solis and seconded by Member Steve Johnson to adjourn the meeting.
