2 SCHOOL DANCES School dances are held periodically for 7 th and 8 th grade students. Open only to Middle School students who have not earned an extended detention or suspension. Dances are held periodically on Fridays from approximately 2:30 4:30 PM. Parents are encouraged to volunteer to chaperone. Students must remain in the building until parents arrive. Please pick up your student on time. SIXTH GRADE CAMP Our sixth grade students have the opportunity to attend a 2-day camp, which is held in May. More information will be sent home in January or February. SKI AND SNOWBOARD CLUB This club is open to all Middle School students and provides them with the chance to purchase lift tickets at Cannonsburg Ski Area at a reduced cost. Students must provide their own transportation to the area and may enjoy the fun and excitement of Cannonsburg at any time the area is open, based upon the guidelines established by the area. The club provides students with the opportunity to ski and slide with other students from North and East Middle. STUDENT COUNCIL - Ten representatives are selected for each grade. School-wide elections are held for representatives and school officers for eighth grade in the spring of their 7th grade year. Announcements will be made in the fall for interested sixth & seventh graders concerning their fall elections. The Student Council sponsors the magazine sale, which is the North Middle School fund-raiser. All students may participate in the magazine sale that begins in early September. They also sponsor dances throughout the year. The Student Council makes the decisions on how the profits from these events are to be spent.. 78er Football: Sponsored through the Community Ed. Program. The Season begins mid August and runs through the first of November. Available to 8 th graders and 7 th with Coach and Athletic Director approval. Games are held on Wednesday at 7:00 pm. Volleyball (Girls): Season September-October. Try-outs. 2 teams will be selected for each grade. Football Sideline Cheerleading: Season - Mid August thru October. No try-outs. Available for all 7 th and 8 th graders. Squad will cheer at all home football games. Tennis (Girls): Season - Start of school thru October. No try-out required. Cross Country (Co-Ed): Season Start of school thru October. Boys and Girls will compete separately. Meets are on Wednesdays with invitational meets on Saturday. Basketball (Boys): Season - Late October thru end of December. Try-outs required. 2 teams will be selected from each grade level. Swimming and Diving (Girls): October thru December. No try-outs. Swimmers will practice at North Rockford. Divers will practice at Rockford High School. Competitive Cheerleading: Season - November thru January. Try-outs required. 2 teams: 7 th and 8 th. Squads will cheer at all home basketball games and compete in 4 Competitive Tournaments. Wrestling: Season - Mid January thru March. No try-outs. Wrestlers will compete by weight classification. Swimming and Diving (Boys): Late January thru March. No try-out required. Swimmers will practice at North Rockford Middle School. Divers will practice at Rockford High School. (We will combine with East Rockford Middle School to make one team.) Basketball (Girls): Season - Late January thru mid March. Try-outs required. 2 teams will be selected from each grade level. Tennis (Boys): Season - March thru May. No try-out required. Track & field (Co-Ed): Season March thru May. No tryout required. Boys and Girls will compete separately.

3 PHYSICALS: Rockford Public Schools requires all athletes to have a PHYSI- CAL on file before a student may try-out or participate in a sport. Physical forms are available in the office or on-line. You must return this form to the main office prior to try-outs, completed by you and your physician. PARTICIPATION FEES: A participation fee is required. Middle school B Teams- $90.00 Middle school A Teams- $90.00 High School-All sports- $ FAMILY MAXIMUM- $ ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY POLICY (7th and 8th GRADES): 1. Athlete must pass at least five (5) classes with a minimum of three C- s. 2. Ineligible students will serve a two-week period of athletic ineligibility. If grades have met the standards, the athlete will then be allowed to compete. If the athlete has not attained minimum standards after the initial two-week period, grades will be checked on a weekly basis thereafter to determine eligibility/ ineligibility. NATIONAL SPELLING BEE - Open to terrific spellers with recommendation from your Language Arts teacher. Local competition is usually held in January, followed by Regional competition in March. PEER TO PEER: A peer-tutoring program that occurs during an intervention time called Connect here at North Rockford. Peer to Peer tutors provide assistance in the four core subject areas during the half hour intervention time. Seventh and eighth grade students apply to be Peer to Peer tutors at the beginning of the year. Stringent academic and behavioral requirements must be met by all applicants. Prior to implementing the program, the selected individuals receive training on how to best serve their classmates in their role as a peer tutor. ODYSSEY OF THE MIND Odyssey of the Mind is open to all interested students. Creative thinking is stressed. Regional competition is February/March. Parent volunteers are needed to coach the teams. 3. If ineligibility takes place during the season, the athlete must still attend all practices and team functions per the coaching staff.

4 MICHIGAN SCHOOL BAND AND CHOIR EVENTS - Students involved with band and/or choir will receive a list of required events the first week of school. These will also be noted in the school newsletter under Upcoming Events MIDDLE MANIA/LOCK-IN Sixth grade students have the opportunity to participate in an after school activity day (Middle Mania) twice throughout the school year. Seventh and eighth grade students have one day and evening of activities (Lock-In) provided for them throughout the year. Students can participate in swimming, inside sports activities, karaoke, foosball, ping pong, and rented games. Seventh and eighth grade students also have a dance on this day. Pizza and pop are provided for the students. There is a charge for these activity days. MIDWEST TALENT SEARCH - Open to students who score a 95% on an Abilities Test or Achievement Test in Math/ Reading areas, or by parent recommendation. It is usually held in October. NATIONAL GEOGRAPHY BEE - Open to interested students with recommendation from social studies teacher. Local competitions held in early spring. RAM Buddies Open to all 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th grade students who are interested in participating in a friendship mentoring program. Interested students are required to fill out an application and provide teacher recommendations. Training will be provided and the advisor will match the students with other student(s) who have special needs. Students will be asked to say hi to their buddy, greet them in the hall or by their bus, and occasionally sit with them at lunch. The RAM Buddies advisor will provide additional opportunities for interaction. A great time is always had by all! TRAINING CODE: All members of athletic teams are bound by training rules, at all times throughout the entire calendar year. Rules include penalties for use and possession of tobacco, alcohol, drugs, controlled substances and penalties for any conduct or behavior which would bring discredit to the school, team or athlete. INTRAMURALS- Intramural programs are offered throughout the school year for all 6-8 grade students. These activities require a parent permission slip. There are no-cuts or participation fees for intramural activities. Activities may include: Aerobics, Archery, Basketball, Bowling, Football, Floor Hockey, Frisbee, Golf, Soccer, Swimming, Track and Field, Cross Country, Skiing, and Volleyball. 5 STUDENT RECOGNITION STUDENT OF THE MONTH - Recognition of two students in each grade for outstanding workmanship, citizenship and/or self-improvement. Students are nominated by teachers. CITIZEN OF THE MONTH - Recognition of students who are helpful and respectful to others in the classroom and hallways. Two students from 7th and 8th grade are selected each month as Citizen of the Month. School personnel nominate students. HONOR ROLL - East and North Rockford Middle Schools will recognize all students receiving a 3.3 to 3.59 GPA per marking period. PRINCIPAL S HONOR ROLL - East and North Rockford Middle Schools will recognize all students receiving a 3.60 GPA or higher per marking period. NATIONAL JUNIOR HONORS SOCIETY - 7th and 8th grade students earning a 3.7 or higher cumulative GPA at the end of the first semester, are invited to join the NJHS. The Chapter Advisory Committee reviews information received from these students concerning community service, personal goals, and teacher and community recommendations. Students are then selected for this honor and are inducted into the NJHS each spring. AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM - A six-week program offered in the fall and winter. Activities include cooking, arts & crafts, game room, intramurals, Ping-Pong and many others. Registration is required. Information will be available at the end of September for the fall session, and in January for the winter session. BREAKFAST BOOK CLUB- Have you ever read a terrific book and wanted to discuss it with someone? Breakfast Club is a book discussion group that meets every other month at 7:00 a.m. to discuss a book chosen especially for our students. Books are selected based on their reading appeal and potential to generate discussion. A breakfast of bagels or donuts, juice and milk is provided for students as they discuss the book. Breakfast Club is open to all students, sixth through eighth grade. WHITE CAPS BALL GAME 7th grade field trip, open to all seventh grade students. 7th grade Band Students perform at the game. 8th Grade Trip - Open to all eighth grade students. As always, attending this trip is a reward and a privilege for those who have worked hard and were well behaved throughout their 8 th grade year. It is our hope that all students will be able to attend. Students will not be allowed to attend if they are suspended during the school year for possession or use of drugs or alcohol, or are suspended three or more times. A team will review suspensions.
