10 The most powerful argument in the new report comes from an examination of students in the Mass Math + Science Initiative (MMSI) program who took AP courses but did poorly on the grueling three-hour exams The college attendance rate for MMSI students who got a 1 on an AP exam was 77 percent, much higher than the 53 percent college attendance rate of MMSI students who did not take AP exams. MMSI students with scores of 1 who go to two-year colleges have a persistence rate of 70 percent, more than those who don't take an AP exam. But the news is even better for another group of low-scorers. MMSI students who got just a 1 and attended four-year colleges have a persistence rate of 92 percent, compared to 92 percent for those who score a 3, 94 percent who score a 4, and 99 percent of those who score 5. 13 History of the International Baccalaureate The International Baccalaureate (IB) was founded in Geneva, Switzerland in 1968 as a non-profit educational foundation. A group of talented, forward-thinking teachers at the International School of Geneva, with assistance from several other international schools, created the IB Diploma Programme. What started life as a single programme for children of diplomats who were preparing for university, has today grown into four programmes for students aged 3 to 19.
14 Benefits of Springbrook High School s International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Students are engaged in a comprehensive, challenging interdisciplinary curriculum which provides them with the skills they will need to successfully complete college. Students are encouraged to think and act as world citizens. Teachers implement IB philosophy and teaching practices in their non-ib classes. Students may also take AP exams in IBDP subjects when curriculum matches. The average total SAT score for IBDP students in the Springbrook High School (SHS) Class of 2013 was 1742 (out of a possible score of 2400), nearly 100 points above the MCPS benchmark. 100% of the SHS IBDP Class of 2013 were accepted into a college of their choice. Scholarship offers made to the SHS IBDP class of 2013 topped 3.8 million dollars. IBDP students participate in three hours of Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) hours per week which include art, sports, and community service. IBDP students may participate in international service learning opportunities, such as Costa Rica 2013, Thailand 2014.
15 Benefits of Springbrook High School s International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme College Recognition of IBDP Subjects Many universities grant sophomore status to students with HL test scores of 5, 6, or 7 and allow them to enroll in classes beyond the introductory level. Some universities also award credit to students for SL exams who have earned the IB diploma. The policies of several universities listed below serve as examples.
