3 To the Players, Coaches, Families, and Fans, To the Players, Congratulations on an amazing season. You and your teammates have made it to the SportsCare/NJSIAA State Championship. Some of you will go home victors, others to defeat. Regardless of the outcome, you have accomplished and completed a season that you will always cherish. You have worked hard during the off season and you have reaped the rewards during the season. You have made your Coaches, Families, Schools, and Towns proud. Your journey this season will have life long memories. Moments that will be shared and repeated for the years to come. Regardless of the outcome, hold your head up high knowing that you have given it your all. Best of Luck to all of you and remember these days forever. To the Coaches, You have spent an unrecognizable amount of time to prepare your team for this final battle. The preparation in the off season, the preseason, the season, and now the Championship. Few get to reap the rewards of their hard work and dedication. Much of your time and effort goes unnoticed, but for you it s the internal drive that counts. The Love of the Game. The thrill to teach, to educate, and to build life long bonds between players, coaches, and all those involved. You have created a team that consist of more than just the players, it goes beyond that. It includes the cheerleaders, the managers, the coaches, the families and towns. There is no prouder moment than knowing your troops are ready for battle. You have created a forum for life long memories. Congratulations and good luck. To the Families, You are the backbone of the team. Your support of the players and coaches has unmeasurable value. It may go unnoticed by many, but appreciated by all. You have spent countless hours in support of the team. You suffer any defeat more than the players themselves. Fortunately, there have been few defeats, if any, for you are heading to the SportsCare/NJSIAA State Championship. You will be wearing team colors and jerseys, and cheering them on from the crowd. As with the players themselves, you feel honored and proud. Congratulations. To the Fans, Thank you. You make the game worth playing. You brave the elements to support your team. You show up each week and cheer them on. You may not be on the field but you can influence the play. You are the twelfth man. Your support is appreciated by all. 5 Mission Statement The NJSIAA, a private, voluntary Association serves its student-athletes, members schools and related professional organizations by the administration of education-based interscholastic athletics, which support academic achievement, good citizenship and fair and equitable opportunities. We believe that member schools, along with their leagues and conferences, share these convictions: A safe and healthy playing environment is essential to our mission. Participation in interscholastic athletics enhances the educational experience of all students. Interscholastic athletics is a privilege. Excellence in both academics and athletics is pursued by all. Interscholastic participation develops good citizenship and healthy lifestyles, fosters involvement of a diverse population and promotes positive school/community relations. Rules promote fair play and minimizes risks. Cooperation among members advances their individual and collective well-being. Training of administrators and coaches promotes the educational mission of the interscholastic experiences. Properly trained official/judges enhances interscholastic competition. The NJSIAA is the recognized state authority on interscholastic athletic programs. The NJSIAA is composed of 435 member high schools. It provides more than 270,000 student-athletes opportunities to participate in nearly 3,000 games, workshops, clinics and other NJSIAA-sponsored activities within a given year. The NJSIAA offers more championships for its student-athletes than any other state in the nation: For Boys: Cross-Country, Football, Soccer, Basketball, Bowling, Fencing, Ice Hockey, Swimming, Diving, Indoor Track Relay Championships, Indoor Track Individual Championships, Wrestling, Baseball, Golf, Lacrosse, Outdoor Track Championships, Tennis, and Volleyball. For Girls: Cross-Country, Field Hockey, Gymnastics, Soccer, Tennis, Volleyball, Basketball, Bowling, Fencing, Swimming, Diving, Indoor Track Relay Championships, Indoor Track Individual Championships, Golf, Lacrosse, Softball, and Outdoor Track Championships. 21 The following was taken from the NJSIAA's first record book published in 1919 (Note: The NJSIAA was founded in 1918, first to regulate football, then all high school sports.) FOOTBALL Summarizing competition of high and prep. schools in 1919 Summarizing the results of the interscholastic football competition of New Jersey in 1919, the high school championship of the State was awarded to Barringer, of Newark, and the prep school title to Peddie Institute, of Hightstown. In the latter case it is a noteworthy fact that this was the fourth successive time that Peddie triumphed in the prep school division, a remarkable achievement for the coach of the Gold and Blue, Earl C. MacArthur. Incidentally Peddie had the distiction last year of triumphing in football over its arch rival, Lawrenceville, for the first time in the history of the schools' athletic relationship. The Lawrenceville School won the State championship in 1912 '13 and '14. The following year, 1915, saw Blair Academy mounting the championship pedestal. Since 1916 Peddie has reigned supreme on the prep school gridiron, its champion teamas have been captained in turn by Jones, Riggan, Anderson and Ecker. The champion teams in 1919, as was the case the year before, were awarded handsome trophies donated by E.W. Siple, alumni secretary of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, who has shown interest in material form in the promotion of interscholastic competition in New Jersey. Barringer and Peddie, as well as the schools judged sectional title winners, were officially awarded the State championship by decision of the executive board of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association. In the high school division East Orange loomed up as a formidable contender for the State title up to the last game of the campaign. The Red and Blue of East Orange had not only been undefeated up to that time, but its line had not been crossed by an opponent for a goal or touchdown. In the deciding game, however, East Orange had to lower its colors to Barringer, the score being 29 to 7 in favor of the Newark team. Barringer had previously lost a 7 to 0 game to Lawrenceville and was defeated, 21 to 0, by South Side, a game in which city league regulations deprived the losers of the services of four of their regular players, boys who were eligible in all other games. The season revealed two undefeated high schools teams-rutherford and Brigeton-but none of those played schedule warranting a Class A championship rating. In the opinion of the executive board, empowered to pass judgment on the championship situation, Barringer was regarded best, of the high school teams and consequently awarded the State title. Peddie clearly was master of the prep school division. The Hightstown team encountered one defeat, that by a 6 to 3 margin at the hands of Gullum Hall of West Point, but the MacArthur machine triumphed over Blair and Lawrenceville, besides winning over Pennington and Newark Junior College, and played scoreless ties against the Freshmen elevens of Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania. No other prep school team in the State equaled a record such as that. In the team rating Blair was graded second and Bordentown, third. The Military Institute team was placed a notch above Lawrenceville, having played through a difficult schedule and been scored upon by only one team. Easton defeated, Bordentown, 10 to 0. In the high school class East Orange was rated second and South Side of Newark third. The grading of the other schools, the first thirteen in the high school division Class A and B and the first eleven in the prep school class, is show in appended lists. To give the "little fellows" a chance to shine and compete for championships in their respective classes, the schools were divided into Classes A, B and C, according to their male enrollment. In Class B, embracing schools with an enrollment between 100 and 300, Rutherford was awarded the championship of Northern New Jersey, Asbury Park in Central Jersey and Woodbury in South Jersey. Atlantic City and Camden were rated on a par for Class A supremacy in South Jersey. Only in South Jersey was there a Class C competition amoung schools holding membership in the State association. The title in that division was awarded to Wildwood. GRIDIRON TITLE WINNERS FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS FOR 1919 CLASS B - HIGH SCHOOLS State Prep School..Peddie North Jersey...Rutherford State High Schools..
