Kennedy The Edmore Close-Up students have reached their goal! Over a year ago 11 students decided they were going to try raise, what they felt was an outrageous amount of money in order to take a trip of a lifetime. For 18 months the students fundraised and fundraised facilitating a 5K, holding steak fries, selling clothing, raffle tickets, donuts, and concessions. It has finally paid off. With about $22,000 in the bank the students will be headed to Washington on April 27 th. This is been a long journey, but the tough part is over. In such a small community raising over $20,000 looked nearly impossible. There were some Saturdays, some late nights, and long evenings that the students put in, but essentially what made everything possible was the community. The community turn-outs at the steak fry and the 5K were huge. The support that was given to the students was outstanding. With such a small community all the fundraising that takes place can sometimes overwhelm both spirits and pocketbooks. It was so encouraging to see people going above and beyond their share of the fundraising whether it was the community members who showed up at everything or the parents of the students who donated copious amounts of time and money. A big thank-you goes out to the companies who sponsored the events that were held, the parents who supported the organization and their students, and the community members who supported each and every fundraising event. 3 Another month has come and gone and we now focus into the month of March. March is an exciting time for our girls basketball team as they will make their run for success throughout the month. Time will tell how they do and we wish them the best of luck! Win or lose we still support the Lady Raiders. During this month we will focus in on NWEA testing for the second time this year. NWEA is a test that challenges are students in math, reading, and science. We will test grades K- 11. When we receive the results it tells us where students are low, medium, and high for the areas in those 3 subjects. We use this data to set up the RTI time that we have for 50 minutes a week (25 minutes on Tuesdays and Thursdays.) After reviewing the NWEA scores we categorize our students and group them in the areas where they need the most help. We teach directly to their needs. Edmore staff takes pride in directing the curriculum to fit the needs of your child and we will continue to do so. This strategy brings students up to speed if they put in the time and effort. I held a student body meeting for grades 4-12 last Friday February 21 st. I presented true statistics that show the difference between an individual without a higher Ed degree and one that receives a higher Ed degree. True numbers show that the individual with a degree succeeds at a much higher level. This holds Edmore High School responsible to ensure that the students are college ready. We will continue to work to make sure that they leave here with the best chance possible to excel in their college studies. I m asking all guardians that you help us by making sure that you keep your child in the building as much as possible, with the exception of your child being ill. It makes it challenging to do what we want to do when they aren t present. We need everyone working together to make for a clean and crisp education system. It s also important for parents/guardians to engage in what s going on here at Edmore High School so we can work together as one. Enjoy the month of March and keep warm! 4 By Mrs. Thorvilson The science classes have been in the lab experimenting in their respective areas. The sophomores and seventh graders used raw potatoes to test the effect not washing hand, of washing hands with water and washing hands with warm water and soap. They found that soap and warm water were the most effective method of getting rid of bacteria. The water cycle was simulated in the lab by the eighth graders using boiling water and then using a cover as a surface on which condensation could form. They found the mass of the water before and after evaporation. This class also used ice cubes as mini glaciers to observe glacial movement. A density lab was done by the freshman online physical science class. They compared the densities of water, corn syrup and vegetable oil. The seventh graders, along with Ruth, the south entry. They have been able looking at the veins in the leaves. 8 th Grade Science Lab have been taking care of the plants in to identify monocots and dicots by **************************************************************************************************** 2 nd & 3 rd Grade By Miss Rzaszutak This past month we celebrated the 100 th day! It is crazy to believe that it has been over a 100 days of school. To celebrate the 100 th day we wrote down 100 words, ate a snack of 100, made posters of a 100 things and made 100 glasses. We also celebrated Valentine s Day! We wrote love letters using conversation hearts and exchanged valentines with our classmates. In Social Studies we have been studying important people throughout history. So far we have learned about George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Lewis & Clark, Sacagawea, Susan B. Anthony, Harriet Tubman and Henry Ford. The students were excited to learn about each and every one of them. Coming up in March we have reading month. There is a list of activities that we will be participating in throughout the month including a field trip to Frost Fire if they reach one of the reading goals that is set for them. It will be a challenge for them but I know they can do it!!!

5 in the 4 th and 5 th Grade By Mr. Mondry It s been a busy past month for the 4 th and 5 th graders. The students have been working hard and continue to improve in a lot of different areas. In science a break in the action was needed so we took a day to do a volcano science lab. With the help of Mrs. Thorvilson the students constructed their own volcanoes with baking soda and vinegar down in the science lab. It wouldn t be a science lab without a mess and that definitely happened! Thanks to Mrs. Thorvilson for letting us create a natural disaster out of her room. Valentine s Day was a smashing hit. All the students brought in their decked out valentine s day boxes. Creativity is not lacking in the 4 th and 5 th grade. Special shout out to the parents for helping make these boxes extravagant. We ended the day with some Valentine s Day Jeopardy as the students counted down the minutes to go home and eat it all. Special reminder that March is reading month. The school website will have the calendar of events that will take place throughout the month. We will also send a calendar home with the students. HAPPY READING MONTH!!!!

6 By Diane Martinson I have thoroughly enjoyed stepping into the role of school librarian! We have lots of great books and magazines in our school library and it is fun to send the kids on a new reading adventure each week. I hope you are finding time to encourage your children to read and/or reading with them on a routine basis. This past month during elementary library time, we have read stories about Eskimos, Alaska, and the Iditarod race. To cap this off the Kindergarten, 2 nd and 3 rd grade went on a walking field trip to Edmore s very own igloo. The kids had a great time learning how Randy and Susanne Blair built their igloo and were able to climb inside and see what it was like. Thanks Randy and Susanne for allowing us to come to your home and for letting the kids see an igloo firsthand! GET YOUR YEARBOOK The yearbook staff is in the beginning stages of creating the yearbook. We are now beginning to take orders for the yearbook. Order forms will be sent home with students and they will also be available in the office. The cost for the yearbook is $ We will be placing our order in May, so don t miss out!

7 Math Counts By Mr. Brenner In February, Edmore School had a team that participated in the Math Counts Junior High competition at Devils Lake. The competition included timed individual tests and one team test with questions ranging from Pre-Algebra to Geometry. Edmore ended up in 2nd place behind Devils Lake. (The team was L-R: Emily Ketelsen, Holden Mack, Sara Hodek, Haylee Linstad and Ethan Sampson) L-R: Tayler Lorenz, Nicole Voeller & Madison Knoke Edmore Public School is proud of this year s spelling bee participants. While we did not advance to the state spelling bee, the students did an excellent job representing themselves and the school in the Ramsey County contest. Our 3 rd grade representative was Madison Knoke, our 4 th grade representative was Tayler Lorenz, and our 5 th grade representative was Nicole Voeller.

8 Lauren Sampson was recently nominated for the ACT Student Readiness Award. 20 students throughout the state were chosen as finalists for the North Dakota State Award. On February 19 Lauren travelled to Bismarck to receive her certificate from Kirsten Baesler, North Dakota Superintendent of Public Instruction, and North Dakota Supreme Court Chief Justice Gerald VandeWalle. Lauren was very honored to have been nominated for this award. Congratulations, Lauren The Edmore High Funding the Future committee has been busy raising funds for scholarships in the month of February. Over $ was raised at the silent basket auction and around $ was raised at the bake sale. They have also done a few 50/50 s at basketball games. Thanks to all who have helped out in some way with these events. Thanks to all the game sponsors this year. A total of $ has been raised. The following businesses that sponsored games this year are: Citizen s State Bank, MayPort Insurance, Freije Chiropractic Center, The Bar, Dundee Mutual Insurance, Dr. Legacie Dental, Brekke Aviation, Helle Flying Service, Farmers Union Insurance, Samson Electric, Johanson Service, Polar Communications, Cenex Harvest States, and Hampden-Edmore Cooperative. The scholarship application has been handed out to the seniors and is due March 10 th. It then goes to the scholarship committee who reviews all the applications to make sure it is completed correctly. The goal of the committee is to give every applicant a scholarship if the application in complete. There is also a $ incentive to have total class participation of all seniors that plan on attending college. Parents please encourage your student to fill out this scholarship application.

9 By Mrs. Val Sampson Curling is still a hot topic at Edmore High School. Recently, two teams from Lake Region Curling Club competed at the North Dakota State Bantam Championships, held in Fargo. Both teams won their respective events, and are back-to-back champions, for 2013 and 2014! Sara Hodek is the vice skip for the Abbey Kitchens rink, which won the Under-14 event. Other team members include Eva Sobak of Fairdale, and Sidney Steffen of Devils Lake. Eva and Sidney also have ties to Edmore; both of their fathers are graduates of Edmore High School. Tim Hodek is skip for Team Hodek, and Ethan Sampson plays lead for that team. Team Hodek won the Under-18 event. Other teammates include John Lindgren and Jake Brekke, both from Grand Forks. Congratulations Tim, Ethan and Sara!!

11 NOTICE OF SCHOOL ELECTION Notice is hereby given that on the 10th day of June, 2014, the annual election for the Edmore School District #2 will be held for the purpose of electing 2 members to the school board. The positions up for election are currently held by Audrey Lorenz and Doug Freije. The election will be held at the Edmore Public School. Polls will be open at 11 a.m. and will close at 7:00 p.m. of that day. Applications are available at the Edmore School. The deadline for filing for the office of board member is Monday, April 7, 2014, by 4:00 p.m. By order of the Edmore School Board
