Junior Head Newsletter Dear Kingswoodian Family Friday, 7 July 2017 K-Day and Half Term are now past and the second half of Term 2 has commenced well. I trust you were all able to get together for some quality family time during the recent lengthy Half Term break. Of course our little city has been completely rejuvenated for the 43rd running of the National Arts Festival and, although it appears a little quieter than usual, many shows are reporting full house performances and it continues to bring in much-needed extra revenue to our city. Our Foundation Hall has been a very popular venue with the Follow Spot production team again producing some wonderful entertainment. All grades have attended shows, exhibitions and workshops and much value and enjoyment has been gained by their attendances. The College Head, Mr Trafford, and the Marketing Manager, Mr Ncube, will be in Zambia during the course of next week. Refer to the marketing caledar at the end of this newsletter for further details. For those in the area, please make every effort to get anyone who may be interested in a Kingswood Education, to attend the presentations. The official opening of the Kingswood Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship (ICE) Centre, takes place in the Senior School later this afternoon and the Junior School has made a big contribution towards the first theme, Campus Creatures. This Centre will be the focus area for all creativity prgrammes and innovative teaching ideas in the future and will, I believe, become another focal point/area in the College. It will house all exhibitions which will be on display for all pupils, parents and visitors to view.
I will be collecting the Kingswood Bath Exchange students from Port Elizabeth on Tuesday for their six week stay with us in Grahamtown and there is great excitement for their arrival. I am sure that Alexander Bushell, James Redman, Eleanor Duke and Anisha Gofton will be made to feel very welcome and at home in our environment for the duration of their stay. As you are aware, a team of Grade 6 pupils took part in the Sasol Forever Resorts Enviro Quiz competition for This was held at P.J. Olivier High School at the end of May. We have received the results and our team came 6th in the Eastern Cape and are now moving on to the second round of the competition. The topic for this round is Water Health. The teams are required to test the quality of various water samples within certain perimeters. They will then be required to complete a booklet and submit this by term s end. If they qualify for the final round, it will be held at Gariep Dam at the Sasol - Forever Resorts. In 2015 our team were placed 3rd out of over 1000 schools from the Free State and Eastern Cape areas and thoroughly enjoyed their weekend stay at the Resort for their final round of the competition. Our sincere congratulations to the following Grade 6 pupils who made it through: Harry Weissenberg, Tricia Vassiliou, Connor Sholto-Douglas, Amy Hobson, Lauren Maddocks and Lunga Nhanha. You made Kingswood Junior School proud. Well done! Derek Braans Head: Junior School Boarding News Intermediate: Life has, once again, resumed in Intermediate after our much enjoyed Half Term break. Test Week is around the corner and there have been studious prep sessions throughout the week. Further sessions will also take place over the weekend to ensure thorough preparation. Many of the girls paid a visit to Mr Braans at his home on Tuesday evening where they were treated to hot chocolate and munchies. Such a spoil! On Thursday night a group of girls went, in support of their friends dancing in the Arts Festival ballet show, to watch the Secret Garden performance and what a treat that was! Tonight, we will all go up to the Astro to cheer on the staff as they take on the parents in a friendly hockey match. Tomorrow morning we will escort the girls up to the Village Green where they can have a final look around to see if there are any end-of-festival-bargains to be had! In the evening we will attend the music concert in the chapel
and following this we will have our movie to look forward to as well. On Sunday we will get our blood pumping in a netball round-robin mixed-aged fun competition! Intermediate s Stars were Jodi Armstrong, Lathitha Bekezulu, Lineo Tsoele and Sethu Zothe all for settling back quickly into their routines after the break. Boys Village: With the hype of the Formal Dinner over, our Van Vuuren Village boys have a few important events coming up next week. These include the start of Test Week and the Derby Day against Woodridge College. Tonight there is Kwam and an opportunity to support the staff/parents Hockey match. Tomorrow the Student Assistants on duty have planned activities aimed at improving the hockey and Rugby skills of the boys. The rest of the day will be spent watching sport on TV, playing in the garden and the day will end with a movie. The South African Youth Orchestra is performing in our Chapel tomorrow evening and we are encouraging the boys to attend. After breakfast on Sunday we are off to the markets at the Arts Festival to see if we can pick up any late specials as the festival comes to a close. Our boys have seen numerous shows and they seemed to have enjoyed them. Renovations around the Village are ongoing as we prepare for the 125 campaign. We have a new entrance to the grounds and houses are now clearly signed. The next major project is the upgrading of Crouch House where new beds, cupboards, shelves and carpets will be installed. JUNIOR BOARDING FORMAL DINNER Both boys and girls boarding houses enjoyed their Formal Dinner on Wednesday evening at the Wyvern. It was the first time that both houses joined together to celebrate their boarding experiences together. The children, headmasters, housepersons, matrons, student assistants and other specially invited guests all enjoyed a Night with the Stars. Our scrumptious three course dinner included some star element and the children all left with their tummies full and their appetites satisfied. Pastor Keryn Chitsike addressed the children about the fact that, although we are all Stars because we are created special and unique, we don t always feel that way because our world tends to celebrate some people more than others - usually those who are considered beautiful, have a certain social status or are especially talented at school work or sport. However, there is another Celebration of Stars coming, another Award Ceremony - God s Award Ceremony, when God will reward everyone for all that they have done for Him and for others, even though no one else may have rewarded or even noticed them. It s this Award Ceremony that really counts! We were all encouraged to make sure we really shine at that greatest-of-all Night of the Stars. Prep Department Stars of the Week Stars for the week before half term were: Grade 1KC - Tashriqa Peer / Joleen Poultney Grade 1VH - Landa Ntshebe Grade 2S - Paul Addison Grade 2M - Oliver MacQuilkan / Salahuddin Mwinyi Grade 3K - Grade 3 Rugby boys Grade 3V - Grade 3 Netball girls Well done to you all!
Pre-Primary News During the week we have been treated to three shows at the Pre Primary. Tricia and Eva Vassilliou from the Junior School presented a music concert, and performed some ballet and tap dancing. The children were able to relate to them and it was very exciting for our children to see what they can possibly do one day when they are also at Kingswood Junior School. A special treat was when our very own Rev came to visit, however, this time he had his Magician hat on. The children were absolutely enthralled by his tricks. We were really very fortunate to have had these special visitors this week. Grade 6 thomas baines outing The Grade 6 group, along with their teachers and the GAP Students, enjoyed two windy, cold days at the Thomas Baines Nature Reserve before half term. The weather in no way dampened anyone's spirit as the children played and hiked, learned about the bush and listened to many stories. It was a wonderful way to unwind after an extremely busy first half of term and it was refreshing to be away from the noise of Grahamstown and the predicability of school and to observe the beautiful aloes in bloom whilst hiking through the reserve. One of the enduring objectives of this excursion is to encourage positive attitudes towards the conservation and wise management of our natural heritage. This is truly embodied by Basil Mills who instructs the children through storytelling and narrative throughout the time away. Myths and legends were also shared and enacted, whilst sketching the cycads in the reserve also formed part of a most enjoyable and rewarding programme.
MUSIC There will be a Sundowner concert next Thursday, 13 July, at 17h00 in the Music School auditorium. A number of soloists are due to play. Please check with your children to see if they are involved. The Rev Kirkby Memorial Concert is on Sunday 23 July (18h30). This concert, which takes place in the Chapel, replaces the usual Sunday evening Chapel service. The Reverend Howard Kirkby was a man who dedicated most of his life to Kingswood College. He was a long-serving teacher, Chaplain and Kingswood Council member. He was also an enthusiastic supporter of music at the College. The annual Memorial Concert named in Howard Kirkby s honour serves as an active memorial to a great man. This year s music will feature our senior musicians who will play a varied repertoire of music for clarinet and flute. More information will follow. Three Preppies, six hands - Rachel Wilhelmi, Eva Vassiliou and Megan Sheard getting together to learn a Piano Trio. Sport Sports fixtures next weekend (14/15 July) are against Woodridge, with our boys and girls competing in Netball, Hockey (boys and girls) and Rugby. Boys Hockey will take place on Friday afternoon at Woodridge while the girls Hockey, Netball and Rugby will be played on Saturday, here at Kingswood. Details of these fixtures will be published early next week. Kingswood have already and will continue in various ways to contribute to the Woodridge Disaster Fund. On this note, and initiated by the KJPA, we will be hosting a Walk for Woodridge on the Sunday (16 July) after our Derby Day against Woodridge. This will take place on Mountain Drive and our Sports Department will set out a 5km route in that area. Donations for this fund can be made at the start or finish, should you wish to contribute. This walk will be open to anyone who wishes to participate so please spread the word. Unfortunately because of the State School holidays no fixtures are scheduled for tomorrow. There will be a number of Hockey clinics for the boys and girls next week: Monday 10 July U13 boys clinic 14h00-15h30 Tuesday 11 July U11 girls clinic from 14h00-15h30 Wednesday 12 July U11 boys clinic 14h00-15h30 Thursday 13 July U13 girls clinic 14h00-15h30 to Adam Young who was recently awarded the Jacques Trophy for Perseverance at the Redhouse Yacht Club annual prizegiving. Well done Adam! Thought for the week A river cuts through rock, not because of its power, but because of its persistence. - Jim Watkins
