2 Elected officers President: Dariusz Łukaszewski Vice-president: Weronika Zaperty Secretary: Grzegorz Mączkowski Treasurer: Anna Sałbut Introduction Recently our student chapter witnessed some changes in function due to the fact that we encouraged a few younger students to take part in our activities. That is why the profile of our activities was revised to fulfill the needs of all our members. In this report you can find brief information on all WUT SPIE Student Chapter activities in the last twelve months. Activity for Warsaw University of Technology Summer school Mechatronics in Mobile Robotics We were asked to lead a lecture and laboratories on image processing during international workshop Mechatronics in Mobile Robotics. We presented the algorithms used in image processing and focused on the basic schema of implementation of such algorithms. Apart from this we prepared a set of tasks which present this topic in Matlab and lead a computer laboratory.

3 XII Festival of Science As usually we took part in organization of the Festival of Science at our university. It is very important event which takes place in September each year and is a great opportunity to show the mysteries of science to young children. This time we prepared workshop for children and additionally the interactive exhibition in cooperation with other scientific chapters from the Faculty of Mechatronics. The workshop included presentation of common optical phenomena such as: reflection and refraction of light, color mixing, optical illusions and the principles of work of several optical instruments. Besides we showed a thermo-vision camera, holograms and luminescence. We had almost 100 visitors, mainly children from primary school. During the exhibition we presented an optical data transmission setup based on voice transmission via an optical fiber, a simple system of image recognition including a camera which followed the marker and several gadgets describing optical phenomena such as total internal reflection, lens imaging and color mixing. Fair of scientific chapters and student organizations KONIK In October we took part in annual fair of scientific chapters and student organizations of Warsaw University of Technology. As always it was a great opportunity to present our activities to students and invite them to cooperation. This time it was a big success because we found several new members not only from our faculty, but also from the Faculty of Telecommunication and Information Technology. Action Students for Children In December we joined an action Students for Children which purpose was to present some scientific topics to children from orphanage. We tried to make them interested in optics and photonics.

4 Education and projects Conferences We had our representation on Optics and Photonics 2008 conference in San Diego. Two of our members held presentation about their research: Michal Wengierow: Multiwavelength interferometer for high accuracy measurement of long gauge blocks and Anna Pakula: Interferometric method for in-situ monitoring of fiber insertion in 2D fiber connectors fabricated through Deep Proton Writing We also took part in annual meeting of SPIE student chapters which this year took part in Torun. It was a great opportunity to share our scientific interests and ideas for our chapters development as well as start new friendships. Scientific projects In order to keep new members and provide some interesting activities for them we decided to start a few scientific projects which don t require advanced knowledge in optics or photonics, but rather enable to learn about it in a practical way. We proposed three projects: Volumetric display a case study to check if it is possible to build a low cost 3D display using rotating screen and of-the-shelf DLP projector. Multi-touch screen a project proposed by students from neighboring Telecommunication and Information Technology faculty to realize in cooperation with our chapter. SPIE educational kit a set of optical instruments with instructions for creating simple workshops describing optical phenomena. It is meant to summarize our experience in leading workshops for children so that we can share it with school teachers. Currently these projects are at the stage of concepts but we hope they will develop soon. Creation of links between student chapters This year for the first time we took part in annual SPIE Chapters Meeting and we hope to continue this participation in the future to tighten our links with other chapters from Poland and Central Europe. Additionally we took part in Optics and Photonics conference and we are planning to attend to this conference this year as well so that we will be able to establish new contacts with other chapters from abroad.

5 Our plans for the next year are: Future plans keep our involvement in the annual events at Warsaw University of Technology: Festival of Science and Fair of Scientific Chapters and Student Organizations. Participate actively in SPIE Student Chapters meeting in Develop scientific projects mentioned earlier in this report. Encourage more of our members to active participation in our activities. Two of our members: Grzegorz Maczkowski and Weronika Zaperty are planning to attend this year to the Optics and Photonics conference in San Diego.
