Luckily, you are not at it alone! Interactions with your peers can help create a sense of community and belonging, which is crucial to the collective experience within the PhD program. Whether you are a local or international student, a network from which to draw upon (one that understands the stresses of qualifying exams, seeking funding, dissertation work, finding work-life balance, etc.) can enhance everyone s experience in the program. Developing social support networks is essential not only as a PhD student but as a researcher and scholar. In efforts to continue to build community between and across cohorts here at Jane Addams, your doctoral committee reps, Jodie and Susie, will be coordinating a number of social events for us to meet, network, and have fun, starting with the event below. 2 P A G E 2 F E A T U R E Welcoming the 2017 Cohort! We are excited to welcome five new members to the JACSW Doctoral program! Luis F. Barutell is from Spain. He received his BSW (1996) and his MA in History (2001) from the University of Oviedo, Spain and completed postgraduate programs on Teaching Social Studies (2003), and on European Educational Policy (2009). Luis earned his MSW from Aurora University in 2016, and holds a license by ISBE as School Social Worker. Luis has been an adjunct professor in the School of Social Work of Gijon, Spain ( ), and vocational teacher in several publics schools of Asturias and Andalucía ( ). He has authored and co-authored a number of texts for McGraw-Hill Interamericana. In 2014 he joined the Visiting Teachers in the USA Program, serving for three years as Parent Facilitator & Community Liaison at Woodstock Community Unit School District. His areas of interest include multiculturalism, social history, and the political dimensions of social and cultural issues. Luis loves Chicago and the energy of Pilsen in particular, which is the neighborhood where he lives. He is excited to follow in the path of Jane Addams! Lisa Doot Abinoja is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She graduated from Taylor University with her BSW in 2003, and obtained her Master of Social Work from the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration in Lisa worked in community health focusing on maternal child health, first as an intensive case manager for high risk pregnant women on the west side of Chicago for Lawndale Christian Health Center. After that, she worked for Access Community Health Network in various administrative roles over federal, state, and private grants, including as the project director for Westside Healthy Start, Strong Start, Family Case Management, and Title X. Lisa then transitioned to her current role at Trinity Christian College in 2014, working as the Director of Field Education and as an Assistant Professor of Social Work. Most recently, Lisa assisted the social work program in reaccreditation under the new 2015 standards. She lives in Oak Park with her husband and two daughters. Jessica W. Gardiner has lived in Chicago for ten years. She loves to travel and is an avid rugby player. She received a Bachelor in Social Work from St. Augustine College in 2015 and Master of Social Work from Jane Addams College of Social Work at the University of Illinois at Chicago in Her research interests include improving access to education for individuals from low-income backgrounds, racial, ethnic, sexual, and gender minorities.

Marcelis Posey received his Master s Degree in Liberal Studies from Loyola University Maryland in 2013 and his MSW from the Jane Addams College of Social Work in the spring of Marcelis has extensive practice in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training, Harm Reduction Intervention, Mental Health First Aid, and Motivational Interviewing. During his foundational year at Jane Addams, Marcelis was awarded the opportunity to participate in the specialized Integrated Evidence-Based Behavioral Health Care Training Program through JACSW that focused on social work practice with Late Adolescent and Transitional Youth (ages 16-25). Marcelis works full time as a Social Worker for the Department of Veteran Affairs while maintaining a part time commitment as a Contingency Planning Officer in the United States Coast Guard. This combination of work experience and military service has directed his research interests toward the military veteran population. Specifically, his research interests focus on military veteran transitioning post military service and the emotional impact placed on the veteran while investigating the intersect of the financial impact placed on society. Zixiaojie Yang (Jill) received her BSW in 2015 from Central University of Finance and Economics, in China. Upon graduating, she decided to further her education in the United States. In 2017, she earned her M.A. from the University of Chicago, School of Social Service Administration, where her field of practice was system-involved juveniles. She has one-year direct practice experience with this population at Mandel Legal Aid Clinic, and one-year research experience in victim studies at Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority, Research and Analysis Unit. Her research interests are primarily in issues related to juveniles who have been involved in the Criminal Justice System. In the PhD program at Jane Addams, she wishes to study more about this population in their social context and to work on intervention program development to address their needs.
