3 Letter to the Community Paint us a picture - what does a vibrant region look like to you? Does it include a bustling Saturday night in downtown Erie with patrons in line to see the Erie Philharmonic at the Warner Theater or the opening of the Erie Playhouse s 100th Season? Perhaps it includes a trip to Warren s Crary Art Gallery, Meadville s successful Second Saturday Community Market or families playing and learning together at the experience Children s Museum s new outdoor classroom? Your picture might depict pre-school children being soothed by native songs or taught early literacy skills through theater; senior citizens creating new public art or a cancer patient lost in song while receiving their life-saving treatments. A vibrant region is reflected in our fairs and festivals, on our university campuses, through a dancer s first performance and in the wind whipping against the sails of the US Flagship Niagara. A vibrant region is one in which arts and cultural activities are valued not just in beautiful museums and performance venues, but in our neighborhoods, our classrooms, our homes and in the hearts of our people. The following pages represent YOUR masterpiece! In 2015, you helped create a vibrant community. A vibrant arts and cultural sector is a key ingredient in employee and business attraction and retention. It s also an important factor considered by students and families when making decisions to attend our local universities. You empowered vibrant people. Arts and cultural products, activities and institutions create a culture in which creativity and community pride is valued, purposeful risk-taking can be practiced, and our children can develop essential skills for success in school, work and the community. You helped build a more vibrant future for the region. Arts, culture and heritage activities help us build an understanding of one another, preserve our history and provide opportunities to share experiences together. They also help us attract visitors. Arts and cultural activities are an important part of our local economy. YOUR SUPPORT. Brings People Together Celebrates Heritage Ignites POSITIVE CHANGE in our Pride and Spirit Empowers others to Take Action! Art is BUILDING & UNITING our Neighborhoods! By involving the local residents in public art projects, relationships are being built between neighbors in areas where doors once remained closed in solitude. A sense of community is thriving in these areas, people are proud of their heritage, and are using art as the voice to share their story! Bayfront East Side Taskforce (B.E.S.T.) is a 25 block neighborhood located between Holland and Wayne Streets from East Sixth to East Front Street in Erie, PA. 6 B.E.S.T. was a recipient in 2014 of Erie Arts & Culture project grant funding for the murals pictured here painted by Ehren Knapp (left).

7 Local children participated in the painting and installation of the Nepali flag with women in traditional dress on the South side of Cobb s Second Time Around Thrift Shop at 12th and Parade Streets. This was one of four ethnic murals in the SNOOPS mural project funded in part by Erie Arts & Culture project grants in includes the area from 12th to 26th Streets and State Street to Cranberry Street in Erie, PA. SNOOPS Neighborhood Association encompasses the area from East 12th to East 15th from Holland to Wayne in Erie, PA. Sisters of St. Joseph Neighborhood Network Little Italy VIBRANT COMMUNITY International Flavors Community Garden, 400 block West 18th Street, by Steve Mik (Mikolajewski) La Nuova Aurora Club, 1518 Walnut, by Kris Risto This past year SSJNN Little Italy was recognized with a Leadership Award during Fall for Arts & Culture for their excellence in revitalizing Historic Little Italy. More than 15 murals have been installed over the past four years with funding sources varying for each. 7

9 The Philharmonic is dedicated to making high-quality, live music in Erie and giving back to the community that has supported us for so many years. Next season we will present Casablanca, in the Warner Theatre with the score played live by the orchestra. The Warner was originally a movie palace, so it s exciting to bring the film back to where it would have played in its original run in the 1940 s. We re proud to be bringing one of the greatest piano players of all time, Emanuel Ax, to Erie for a week of outreach activities, free programs, lectures, and more. -Steve Weiser, Executive Director, Erie Philharmonic Children s museums are dedicated to preserving childhood, promoting lifelong learning through play and building healthy communities. They cultivate children s curiosity and confidence while providing a community forum for dialogue and discovery. Now more than ever, communities are beginning to embrace the role children s museums provide in ensuring that every child has a chance to play, thrive in school and succeed in life. For over 25 years Dafmark has been one of the organizations contributing to the creative and educational fabric of Erie. The Arts & Culture Campaign has allowed Dafmark to pursue its mission of educational and challenging programming while other resources have become scarce or not available. This campaign is also symbolically linking Dafmark and all other arts organizations in Erie to its most important component, the Erie community itself. Poetry Out Loud, a national recitation contest for high school students is sponsored by The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. Erie Arts & Culture is proud to host the Northwest PA regional competition. Poetry Out Loud enhances Language Arts curriculum, fosters a love of literature and deepens a connection to the written word. 17 Art as a Vocation Creates New Opportunities for Adults with Special Needs Bollinger Enterprises, Inc., (BEi) in North Warren provides employment and community-based services for individuals with disabilities. The Art as a Vocation project develops the skills of blooming artists, provides opportunities for them to sell their work, and enhances selfconfidence and pride. In 2015, Erie Arts & Culture teaching artist, Susan Gobbel, introduced a variety of metalsmithing techniques to adults. As skill in piercing, filing, sanding, wire wrapping and forging was developed, participants were able to begin their own designs with a focus on craftsmanship. After 21 weeks, each individual artist had created a diverse range of quality artisan jewelry to sell at local art shows. To see them grow from never using these tools and materials to designing and creating their own jewelry with a sense of pride and accomplishment was awesome! -Susan Gobbel, Erie Arts & Culture Teaching Artist, Jewelry and Metalsmithing ADVANCING ARTS EDUCATION Edinboro University First in State to offer Arts Infusion Graduate Certificate; Teaching Artist Kelly Armor to Instruct First Course In 2010, Erie Arts & Culture embarked on an innovative arts-integration project, funded through a U.S. Department of Education $1.2M grant. The purpose was to assist three rural school districts in integrating dance, music, visual arts and drama into existing curriculum to enhance the quality of teaching in the classroom, academic achievement, and engagement in the learning process. The outcomes of the project showed student engagement and learning habits exceeded performance targets by 30%. Arts learning positively enhanced discipline, social interaction, and personal dispositions. Edinboro University was an instrumental partner for this project. In the Fall of 2015, they became the first in the state to offer a Graduate Certificate in Arts Infusion. This program continues to successfully infuse the arts into schools by offering opportunities for non-arts teachers and arts specialists to engage together in professional development. The first course, Storytelling and Literature in Early Childhood Education, will be offered in the summer of 2016 with Erie Arts & Culture teaching artist, Kelly Armor, as the instructor. 22 VIBRANT FUTURE CELEBRATING A VIBRANT FUTURE Public Art is Building Bridges between Students and Manufacturers The Art & Industry Project is uniting the community together across industries and is fostering pride in our heritage! The project is a partnership between local manufacturers, Erie County Technical School students, and Erie Arts & Culture teaching artists Tom Ferraro and Ed Grout. Through this partnership, the students understanding of the manufacturing industry broadened, and manufacturers connected with their future workforce pipeline. Under the direction of Ferraro and Grout, the students collaborated across disciplines, to render designs for public art pieces that the students will fabricate and install. The rendering for the first public art piece, Fruits of Our Labor is scheduled to be installed during 2016 in the currently vacant lot at 13th and Holland across from Lovell Place, owned by Rick Griffith Properties. The Globe represents both local and worldwide development. The Horse represents roots in agricultural advancement. The People represent the role of labor in the advancement of our technology. 22

25 The Arts & Culture Campaign allows donors to support a wide base of arts and cultural activities across the community with a single gift. By supporting a vibrant cultural scene in addition to direct support for the Museum the Campaign helps maintain a healthy ecosystem in which museums, theaters, dance and music performances can thrive. -John Vanco, Executive Director, Erie Art Museum The Swan Tavern s Art Show and Sale Girard and Fairview School Districts benefited from a fundraiser hosted by Gail and Eric Root, residents of Fairview, and owners of The Schoolhouse at Manchester Road and The Swan Tavern. Using Erie Arts & Culture as a fiscal agent, each school district received $1,100 for Arts Education programs. The Art Show & Sale featured pieces created by both the students and teachers of these districts. Local artists participated in the show by selling their work, as well as donating pieces for the silent auction. Students were able to connect with the artists and gain insight from those who are making their mark as professional artists in our region. VIBRANT FUTURE Erie Arts Endowment: One Man s Dream in Perpetuity Clarence E. Beyers was a musician, music lover and active member of a number of organizations near and dear to his heart. In 1981, he made a gift to ensure that the music he had enjoyed during his lifetime remained an intrinsic part of our community for lifetimes to come. That first gift began the Erie Arts Endowment. Others followed in his footsteps. Virginia P. Vieser s life s work was caring for children. She also was in admiration of her son s work as an educator. When her son s untimely death left her the recipient of his life insurance policy, she used it to honor both him and her love of children by creating the Arts Education Fund of the Endowment in In 1998, Mrs. Blossom McBrier and the McBrier family created the McBrier Family Fund in memory of James R. McBrier. This significant gift was unrestricted, allowing Erie Arts & Culture the flexibility and freedom to direct funding to support a variety of projects as demonstrated in our Erie Arts & Culture Project Grant Listing.
