In the months of July, August and September the number of visits were 22, 20 and 6 respectively as against a target of 19, 18 and 15. The performance in September was affected because of the arrangement of the teacher training programs. We are now visiting 20 schools which include the Morarji Desai School, Saragur which falls under the Department of Social Welfare, Government of Karnataka. In the month of July, importance was given to GHS Sagare which didn t have a Science or mathematics teacher. Later, teachers from nearby schools were deputed on a part-time basis. Ms. Kavya H S, an engineering student, volunteered during the months of July and August. She spent the 2 months traveling with the mobile science lab and conducting demonstrations and activities based on the biology syllabus. Worksheets Worksheets corresponding to all the chapters in Science and Mathematics of the first term for 10 th standard were printed and distributed to all the participating schools.

3 Meetings Meeting at KSTA Dr. (Flt Lt.) M A Balasubramanya, CEO, SVYM and Mr. Praveen Kumar S, Program Manager, Vignyana Vahini met Dr. Honne Gowda, Member Secretary, Karnataka Science and Technology Academy (KSTA) on 14 th July. The meeting was aimed at discussing possible avenues for collaboration between KSTA and SVYM. Few highlights of the meeting Submission of a proposal on Guidance and counseling for students in rural areas on careers in Science Decision to provide science lab equipment for 25 Govt. high schools of H D Kote taluk from KSTA. SVYM will facilitate the process. Celebration of National Science Day at the District level The team also met Prof. U R Rao, Chairman, KSTA to present the proposal on career guidance. KSTA responded positively be sanctioning an amount of `20000 for a pilot project. Meeting with the BEO A meeting was organized on 3 rd September with Mr. Manjunath, Block Education Officer, H D Kote to present to him the activities of Vignyana Vahini and seek permission for the organizing of the teachers training program. The BEO was appreciative of the efforts and extended his support for all the activities. District Level SSA Implementation Review Meeting Dr. (Flt Lt.) M A Balasubramanya, CEO, SVYM and Mr. Shekar D M, Program Coordinator, Vignyana Vahini attended the District Level SSA Implementation Review Meeting on 13 th September. Chinnara Darshana - with-in district exposure visits of kids and mainstreaming of the school drop-outs by October 1 st were the key issues discussed. Training Programs Teacher Training Program conducted by DPI, Saragur cluster A teacher training program, for the teachers of Higher Primary School of Saragur Cluster, was organized on 27 th August by the Department of Public Instruction. Vignyana Vahini team was asked to organize a session on using locally available materials to demonstrate science concepts. Mr. Ashoka, Science & Mathematics teacher, was the resource person for the workshop, attended by 41 teachers. The highly interactive session was considered one of the best workshops conducted for the teachers. Nairmalya Vahini staff played a supportive role in organizing this workshop. Teacher Training Program for High School Teachers This program was supported by KSTA. It included a 3-day workshop on mathematics, physics and chemistry (1-day each). The mathematics workshop focused on teaching methodologies while the workshops on physics and chemistry focused on conceptual clarity.

4 The topics for the workshop were selected by the Govt. teachers themselves. All teachers from Govt., Aided and Private high schools were invited for the workshop. The attendance of the teachers was very encouraging and we received positive feedback about the workshop. The resource persons included Mr. H H Lingaraje Gowda (Mathematics teacher, Siddaratha High School, Mysore), Mr. Rajendrakumar J (Texas Instruments; An electrical engineer from IIT Madras and Silver medalist in IChO 2005), Mr. Sandeep Jawar (Texas Instruments; An electrical engineer from IIT Madras) and Mr. Praveen Kumar (Vignyana Vahini). The workshop on Biology had to be postponed to the next quarter because of unavailability of the resource person. Teachers & Staff training by JodoGyan A workshop on mathematics teaching methodologies was organized for the teachers of VTCL, VSOE and VTTRC and the staff of Vignyana Vahini on 10 th and 11 th September. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Shaji, Founder of JodoGyan and focused on teaching methodologies in mathematics for the varied age groups. The workshop was lively involving only activities and interactive sessions. Schools covered under the Vignyana Vahini in
