5 FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES - CEREMONY 1 ORDER OF PROCEEDINGS Academic Procession. (The congregation is requested to stand as the procession enters the hall and is invited to participate in the singing of Gaudeamus) The Chancellor will constitute the congregation. The National Anthem. The University Statement of Dedication will be read by a representative of the SRC. Musical Item. Welcome by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor T Nhlapo. Professor Nhlapo will present Archbishop Desmond Tutu with the Africa Leadership Award. The graduands will be presented to the Chancellor by the Dean of the faculty, Professor ME Jacobs. The Chancellor will congratulate the new graduates. Professor Nhlapo will make closing announcements and invite the congregation to stand. The Chancellor will dissolve the congregation. The procession, including the new graduates, will leave the hall. (The congregation is requested to remain standing until the procession has left the hall) The music for the recessional march has been composed by Professor Peter Klatzow. 5

6 THE GRAÇA MACHEL CHANCELLOR S AWARD FOR CONTINENTAL LEADERSHIP Desmond Mpilo Tutu This award is given by decision of the Chancellor acting on the advice of the Council to individuals who have made contributions to Africa though sustained and visionary leadership. It takes the form of a replica in bronze of one of seven magnificent ceramic heads from the ninth century CE, modelled and decorated by early Iron Age farmers in what is now Limpopo Province (and which are on permanent loan by the University to the Iziko Museums). Archbishop Emeritus Tutu: husband to Leah, father to his children, priest, bishop and archbishop, prophet. At 80 he continues to lead, to teach us to smile, to laugh (even to chuckle with delight), to weep, to be angry, to pray, to speak out, to love. Nothing that is not Sacred is sacred. He would take the London palladium by storm if they would let him. There is hardly a just cause that he has not espoused, especially if to do so has been to be unpopular, hardly an abuse of power that he has not identified and condemned. Like the ceramic head of which the award is a replica, Desmond Tutu stands as a very great product of our continent. 6
