1 P LY M O U T H C H R I S T I A N A C A D E M Y P R E S E N T S ExPlore is an educational one-week program at PCA that gives students an opportunity to learn a new skill, study a topic in-depth, check out a career, or take an exciting trip! We believe that the lessons and opportunities students experience through this program will be a tremendous value to their academic, social, spiritual and vocational direction. During ExPlore, our students have opportunities to interact with and learn from others outside of the traditional classroom setting. Through service opportunities, guest speakers and teachers, classes, internships, and trips, our students learn and "shine their lights" for Christ. MARCH 27-31, TH -12 TH GRADE
2 ExPlore General Information PCA's ExPlore week is designed to increase learning opportunities for students. During this week, while our sophomores tour Washington D.C. and our senior students ExPlore Costa Rica for educational and mission purposes, we offer a wide variety of classes and experiences for ALL 10 th and 12 th grade students who do not participate in their class trip, as well ALL 9 th and 11 th grade students. They have an opportunity to learn in areas they are either passionate about or areas they would like to ExPlore new ideas and skills. It s a week to experiment, create, grow and ExPlore. The schedule of the week allows for focused, in-depth study and deeper relationships with teachers and a small group of students. Students are expected to attend all day/every day as they would a normal school week. Days missed will be considered an absence in every class. What are the options? High school students participate in one, or a combination, of these options to equal a full day for each day of the the ExPlore week. 1. Classes (one a.m./one p.m.) 2. Trips - either educational or mission driven. 3. Internships-Educational or Professional (Job Shadowing) to explore careers and learn about the world of work. INTERNSHIP Program Overview Job Shadows will require daily reporting and evaluation. The main objective is gaining experience, and the paperwork students complete help them express what they learned during the experience. Professional Internship (Job Shadow) Experience the work life of a professional for a day or two or all week. This provides a unique opportunity to observe and learn about the world of adult professionals. It allows the student to see what really goes into a particular career choice such as the time lawyers do not spend in a courtroom or the precision required to be an engineer or research scientist. These experiences can aid in career decisions and more importantly, provide a great venue for discovering how God uniquely gifts, equips or prepares them. Students must research their own opportunity for a Professional Internship and complete an application for approval. Prior approval by Administration is required for all Job Shadows. Educational Internship Working in a PCA Elementary classroom provides the opportunity to experience the unique and exciting work of a teaching career. Students who sign up for an Educational Internship will perform tasks assigned to him/her and will work closely with their assigned teacher. The student might prepare copies of papers for children, grade homework and tests, record grades, and perform routine administrative tasks in the classroom. In addition, they may work with students in small groups or individually, or attend special classes (music, art, computer, etc.) with their assigned students. This experience allows students to see the "not so obvious" parts of a teaching career and may lay a foundation to nurture a budding educator! Important ExPlore Dates: NEW THIS YEAR! 5 ALL DAY CLASSES Play Reading Tuesday, 9:00am-2:30pm. We will spend each morning session drinking coffee, reading, and discussing the "play of the day." In the afternoon session, students will get to explore the play further by blocking one of the scenes. The week will conclude with a Friday morning performance (for those able to attend). Plays to be announced. Students need to sign up for the full day. Instructor: Haley Rossi Fee: $0 Location: Modular D Theatre & Theology, Thursday, 9:00am-2:30pm Christianity and the arts have a long and storied relationship that has become more and more fraught in the modern era. Should Christians interact with art? Should we only interact with Christian art? What happens when Christian art is lacking in content or quality, or when secular art has Christian themes? These kinds of questions frame the discussion that Mr. & Mrs. Rossi will guide students through in this class. Students will spend the morning reading a play together and then examine and discuss the themes of the play in connection with Christian faith, theology, and a robust Christian understanding of the arts in the afternoon. Instructor: Matt/Haley Rossi Fee: $0 Location: Modular D A.M. CLASSES Excel Programming Monday, 9:00am-11:30am Think Excel is just a program to put in budgets or do simple math? Think again! Excel can access the internet, files on your computer, as well as look up, extract and analyze data from many sources. In this session we will learn the basics of writing formulas to have excel do amazing things. No matter what career you choose, you will likely use Excel, so learn to use it well! Instructor: Keith Boruta, PCA Alumni Fee $5 Location: Room 16 Heavenly Handmade Monday & Wednesday 9:00am-11:30am. Class time will be spent crafting and sharing a lesson from the Bible. We will not only pour ourselves into a craft made from the heart, but we will also use our handmade crafts as a reminder of a truth we learned and shared from God s Word. Our crafts will include a message board and magnets and a flower pot and garden stone. Come join Miss Koppin and Mrs. Parsons as we let our imaginations create and our hearts be filled. Fee: $5 Limited to 20 Location: Modular 4 Jewelry Making Monday, 9:00am-11:30am. If you love jewelry, and you're even a little bit creative, this is the perfect class for you! Join me as we create beautiful "birds nest" necklaces. This would make a wonderful gift for Mother's Day, a birthday, or just to say "I love you!" We'll laugh, we'll have fun, and you'll leave with a new skill and a beautiful handmade gift or keepsake. Instructor: Dianne Crawford Limited to 12 Location: Modular 3 Fee: $5 Has Science Killed God? Tuesday, 9:00am-11:30am In this session, we explore the question: With all the advances and discoveries in science and technology, has the need for God to explain our origin evaporated? Have these advancements given us clear evidence that our origin does not come from intelligent design? We will first establish the criteria for determining how to make this decision, then we will take an open and honest look at the evidence to decide. We will be using primarily Stephen Hawking's latest theory of the origins of the universe (called "Mtheory") as the naturalist perspective. There will be short quotes/videos from Richard Dawkins and Neil degrasse Tyson as well. I would consider these 3 people to be leaders in the field for a naturalistic world-view. As a rebuttal, we will use, primarily, a rebuttal speech to Stephen Hawking's book The Theory of Everything by John Lennox. John Lennox is associated with Veritas and RZIM. We will also use clips from David Berlinski. David Berlinski is part of the Discovery Institute. John Lennox is an avowed Christian Apologist. David Berlinski, while working for the Discovery Institute (an intelligent design organization that has very strong ties to Christianity) is not a Christian, but is supportive of the Christian worldview. We will conclude that rather than science killing or even reducing God (God of the gaps argument), it has given us more compelling evidence of God. Instructor: Keith Boruta, PCA Alumni Fee $3 Location: Modular A Floral Arranging with Vanessa s Flowers Tuesday, 9:00am-11:30am Mr. West, owner of Vanessa s Flowers in Plymouth, has been providing beautiful floral designs for our community for years and he is bringing his talents to PCA. Upon completion of this floral arranging class, you will leave with a design all your own! Instructor: Victor West Fee $10 Location: Modular Art Room 4 Photography-Working with Lights and Darks Tuesday, 9:00am-11:30am Taught by Professional Photographer, Chelsea Robinson, this class will help you take your photos to the next level. We will start with simple camera knowledge, exposure, shutter speed, and depth of field. Then we will find natural reflectors to aid in brightening your images. And playing with shadows to create depth and edge. Required for class: DSLR Camera. Preferred but not required: computer with Photoshop. Fee $5 Location Room 23 To be Moral, Do We Need God? Wednesday 9:00am-11:30am In this session, we will use lessons from some RZIM speakers (Ravi Zacharias, Abdu Murray, John Lennox) as well as other Christian apologists. We will examine differing worldviews that try to obtain morality without a god (hedonism, naturalism, social-contract, relativism, and so on). We will conclude that for humanity to have a true compulsion (not just a preference towards) or any morals at all, an objective moral law giver is required and that law giver MUST be existential to our existence and therefore a God. Instructor: Keith Boruta, PCA Alumni Fee $3 Location: Modular A

This class will use the word PURPLE as an illustration of our covenant relationship with Christ. Before we were saved, we were Blue. But because of the blood of Jesus, when we received Him as our Savior, we entered a covenant relationship with Him and we became purple. We can never go back to being blue again, although sometimes we act blue we act like our old flesh. Throughout the study, we take that world PURPLE and break it down as to what it means to live life as a woman of God. We will discuss: P Prayer life, being in the Word and learn basic Bible study techniques to make our time in the Word meaningful and relevant and not just an item to check off our to do list of being a good Christian. U Unity, the more we are in the Word, the more we realize that as a body of believers, we are connected to each other. We must understand that each Christian is a child of God our brother or sister in Christ and like any good parent, our Heavenly Father wants us to get along! R Righteousness, where we learn how our choices reflect our heart. The things we find entertaining, the activities we are involved with, the people we associate with all need to be filtered through the truth of God s word. P Purity, where we talk about how purity should be pursued not just living to avoid impurity, but really striving to be pure in body, soul and mind. L Love, where we expand more practically what it means to practice the two greatest commandments: to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind and strength; and to love your neighbor as yourself. E - Eternal Perspective, always living in view of eternity, realizing our time here on earth is so short compared to eternity. The choices we make, the things that cause us to be anxious, etc., must be put into perspective God s perspective. Instructor: Leanne Windle Fee: $10-one-time fee Location: 303
