I estimate that during the weekend over 150 students were involved in sports and activities with, and for, BSM, RIFA football tournaments, rugby matches, basketball, Young Enterprise and last but not least the Bronze Award IA (International Awards). So many of the skills we value and aim to develop in our students and your children are best encountered outside the classroom, and these opportunities alongside the ASAs, service and school residentials, support the holistic education we strive towards. I would like to take a moment to focus on the IA. The expedition our Bronze candidates have undertaken this weekend when they scaled a mountain, camped, cooked and engaged in team building, took our students out of their comfort zone and d e m a n d e d r e s i l i e n c e, c o o p e r a t i o n, independence and problem solving. It was cold, tough and challenging, and all students and staff not only greatly benefited from the experience, but also reflected on their achievements at the end of the weekend (even the bus driver!). However, more is expected as the IA requires these students to undertake service, learn a new skill and be involved in a sport or physical activity to complete the award. When I reflected on this during the weekend as a parent and head, I felt my children are very lucky to be offered such a broad and enriching range of opportunities, and proud to work in a school with staff that value a holistic education and act to ensure we provide the opportunities that we know will develop skills essential for success beyond school. 2 RIFA Cup football I dedicate my Lion s Roar this week to my fantastic 2001 boys football team. They were deservedly crowned RIFA cup champions last Saturday scoring another 15 goals and conceding just one. That brings their record for the season to a wonderful played 23, won 22, lost 1, scored 65, and conceding only 3. Once again on Saturday they played some fantastic football, scored goals that had me leaping on to the pitch in celebration in awe of the team play and skill demonstrated. They have been a pleasure to coach, have gelled together as a team, play together as a unit, support each other and each carries out their role for the good of the team. Marc Co is a quite brilliant goalkeeper and the goals that he has conceded have been exceptional to get past him. Andrew Gibson, Craig Co and Zeke Sy at the back have protected the goalkeeper with consistently strong tackling, great defensive headers and good possession of the ball seeking to always pass out of defense. My wingers Harry Pratt, Seb Ottiger and William Winter have provided the speed, thrust and offensive penetration, beating players and providing great crosses for the team, as well scoring quite a few goals themselves and tracking back marking their opposite number! William Valtos reminds me of Cesc Fabregas in the center midfield general role (I should really say Mark Noble as a West Ham fan-but he s better than that!). He dances in possession, has great vision, skips pass challenges and always has so much time to pick out a killer pass. Liam Duncan my forward was on fire Saturday, and when he is like that his pace, dribbling ability and ferocious shot make him unplayable. Put all that together and you have a fantastic team that have been a pleasure to work with and watch develop, and the joy they have provided can t be measured. On Saturday they played a strong Claret side in the final and rose to the occasion as a team winning 4-1 with William Winter (playing a year out of age) scoring all 4 goals; an incredible achievement. He was so nonchalant about this he didn t even wait around for the trophy ceremony or to receive the much deserved MVP award! The boys have a sense of humour as well and as they received the trophy they all wore the Hardy braces over the football kits! Well done for a tremendous season. As a coach, I have another 8 or 9 boys in my squad and they also competed in the RIFA cup on Saturday and I was very proud of their achievements as well. They too have gelled together as a team, battle for each other and produced some excellent performances. They very narrowly missed out on a semi final place and can be proud of how well they played. Well done George Leather, Tom Thackwray, Jack Gardner, Harry Dickinson, Lachlan Doig Henderson, James Edwards, Sean Roberts, Mark Jenkins, Matthew Tutton and Reivyn Chiang. I must also thank Mike Doig Henderson for coaching this team on the Saturday. We had a number of other teams playing in the RIFA cup and I have included a report below from Mr. Davies coach of the boys 2005 team. RIFA REPORT RIFA CUP SATURDAY, 19 th January Boys Squad: Guthrie Doig Henderson Captain Noah Brock Alessandro Maggiore Connor Lock Aryan Ehsan Ishaan Singru Charlie Tutton Krissh Hora Keshav Kamat The 2005 boys came into this tournament with high expectations after performing so well in the RIFA League competition. We got off to a good start, winning a hard-fought match against LaSalle. They were very difficult to break down but with Guthrie and Noah combining well we were able to break them down eventually. We won 2-1. Our next match was against the Xavier A team. They had some big boys playing for them and raced into a 2-0 lead inside 5 minutes. We got a goal back through Noah, but then they scored a third. Nevertheless we showed a lot of character, making lots of tackles and passing the ball well. Krissh, Keshav, Connor and Ishaan kept them at bay as much as they could and Guthrie scored to set up a nail January 2013

3 biting finish. Unfortunately, a deflected goal towards the end made the final score 4-2 to them. Alessandro, Aryan and Charlie all played well in our next match against Claret. They are one of the stronger teams and we played some excellent football great passing and commitment enabled us to win 2-0 with goals from Guthrie and Keshav. Our final two group games were against Xavier B and Ateneo A. Although we lost 4-1 to Xavier with Guthrie scoring a great free-kick, we came back and beat Ateneo comfortably. Our tackling was getting better and we managed to get some powerful headers in to clear the ball from defence. Noah and Guthrie continued to give everything, working for each other and were able to create 2 chances for Guthrie to score 2 more goals. We finished 2 nd and this resulted in a semifinal against Xavier A. Charlie continued to kick well from his hands and this enabled us to get a few more scoring chances. We were not scared of them this time and we fought as hard as we could but we just couldn t get the equalizing goal and the game finished 2-1 to them with Guthrie scoring again. Although we were disappointed our 3 rd/ 4 th place play off was a game we wanted to win, against Ateneo. We ran, passed, tackled and scored but it wasn t enough to beat them this time. We narrowly lost 2-1. All of the boys enjoyed their afternoon of football and should be very proud of their efforts in getting to the semi-finals. Well done boys! Mr. Davies Coach Important Dates January 23 rd -25 th Year 6 Corregidor trip 25 th No assembly due to ISAC tournament at BSM 30-1 st Year 5 Subic trip 31-1 st Year 4 Caliraya trip February 1 st Whole School Assembly; International Dinner Monday 4 th to Friday 8 th -International Week 8 th International Week assembly th Half term holiday Tuesday 26 th to Friday 1 st March Maths Week Corregidor trip Year 6 are currently on their wonderful Corregidor trip which supports a lot of the enquiry based learning they have been doing on World War 2. Mrs. King has reported in a couple of times each day to say the trip is going really well. It is a great learning opportunity for the children as field trips always are and as we expect, BSM students are impeccably behaved. We look forward to hearing more of their stories next week and hopefully publishing some diary snippets from the children. Have a great weekend and for those teams continuing with their RIFA leagues we wish you the best of luck. Glenn Hardy Primary School Head 3 25 January 2013

4 Last night saw Year 9 students and their parents in school at the Options Evening led by Ms Johnson. We have an excellent range of subjects on offer this year, with a large cohort of students coming through into Year 10, and we very much hope that, having based our option blocks on what the students advised us they wanted to do in the October surveys, all students will be able to follow their preferred combination of courses. We are currently hosting ISAC and it has been a real pleasure to see such great sportsmanship amongst those competing, and those supporting. As I write, BSM are competing well, and I hope to see them featuring in the finals on Saturday. Let s go BSM, let s go! Free Bus: The drop off point of the free satellite bus to San Antonio was changed to Palm Ave this week due to the congestion observed in the previous drop off area (photo included for reference). Please advise those meeting the students off this bus to wait for them on the sidewalk to enable the bus staff to keep those students whose cars have not yet arrived on the bus. The students will not be allowed off the bus unless their parents/ drivers/yayas are there on the sidewalk to meet them. Please ensure you update the school in case of changes in your contact details and that your child/ren is/are picked up promptly as the bus is only allowed to drop off and not to park. Thank you for your support. Nicole Tanjangco Administration Manager 6 25 January 2013

7 Dear All, While the ISAC Football and Basketball continues at BSM, Saturday Rugby this week is in the form of a CBRE sponsored Junior Rugby Touch Tournament to be held at ISM from approximately 8.00am through to 12noon. Teams entered are at Under 8 and Under 10 age groups, but there is also some RIFA Football on this Saturday, so have not entered any other teams. Starting at 12noon on Saturday are the Middle School and Junior Varsity Finals between 12noon and 4pm. There will be 2 semi-finals for each group of MS and JV, followed by the winners of each playing for the trophies. All are welcome to support any of the BSM teams in action. Looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday somewhere!! Regards, Robert Hawtree For and on behalf of Rugby Coaches School Buses You may have noticed two shining silver mini buses in the Level 0 car park over the last few days. These are a contribution from the PTA to the school. Last year s PTA committee deserves full credit for raising the funds; however, this year we have conducted substantial research to find the best fit between available vehicles and the forecast needs of the school. PTA committee vacancies We have 2 slots on the PTA committee falling vacant over the next few weeks, and we are looking for enthusiastic people to come and join us. The bulk of the work will involve preparations for the fete on 20 th April. This is an excellent opportunity to meet a lot of the community quickly, and earn the respect and admiration of your children (honestly!). We anticipate making one appointment at our next meeting on Tuesday 5 th February. If you would like to learn more about what the work involves, please contact me or any other member of the PTA committee. Thanks and regards, Michael Morris BSMPTA President January 2013
