Central to our provision is the focus on your learning experience. This is reflected in our approach to learning, assessment and work-based opportunities. 3

What makes the School of Enterprise, Management and Leadership different? We believe a hands-on, interactive and participative workshop approach to learning with modest group sizes is the most effective way to develop the types of skills that employers look for in graduates. Each module you ll undertake is usually supported by a weekly tutor-facilitated workshop of approximately hours. Group sizes are typically students. At the end of the workshop, you ll normally be tasked to undertake intersession work that then feeds into the next workshop. Our approach encourages you to be proactive and offers an environment that s well suited to enabling you as a student to share your thinking and explore different ideas. If you choose to come here, you ll find our team approachable, encouraging and accessible. 4

Here is an indication of the type of modules that are available each year: Year One Module Information Management and Organisations This module aims to provide students of various backgrounds and experiences with an introductory knowledge of management and organisational behaviour. You ll become aware of your personal and inter-personal skills and capabilities when learning about management issues, and stimulate an interest and enthusiasm for further learning of this subject area. Business Decision-making Here, you ll receive a practical introduction to business decision-making. The interplay between decisions around the organisation and its operations, finance, sales and marketing is explored. This is done through engaging with a business start-up simulation. A key focus of the module is the role that financial literacy plays in supporting effective business management. Scenarios will be used as the basis for supporting the understanding of key financial statements and techniques used to inform business planning and decision-making. In addition, the module provides a hands-on introduction to the use of financial modelling as a tool to support the business planning process. The Contemporary Tourism and Event Environment Through this module, you ll gain an introduction to the characteristics of the contemporary tourism and event environment. The module provides a foundation unit for the study of tourism and events at a local, regional, national and international level. Introduction to Marketing This introductory marketing module explores the role of marketing in the modern business environment and will familiarise you with the core tools and concepts of marketing. The module provides a foundation for later marketing based courses which might be taken either as core modules or optional level two and three modules. Tourism, Events and Destinations: Impacts and Sustainability The aim of this module is to introduce you to the economic, social, cultural and environmental impacts of tourism and events within the context of specific destination environments. The module will also introduce you to the concept of sustainable tourism, considering factors influencing the development of the sustainability agenda within the tourism and events industry. Working with Others and Developing Self Working effectively with others requires skills in communicating and thinking collaboratively. Getting the most out of your degree course requires that you develop skills in reflective thinking and selfmanagement, as well as specific study skills. This module aims to help develop skills in presenting to an audience and collaborating with others face-to-face and in writing. It will encourage you to reflect on and plan for your own personal development with an emphasis on learning from and teaching one another. 9

Year Two Module Information Competitive Advantage in the Contemporary Service Environment Here, you ll discover the importance of competitive strategy in securing a position of competitive advantage in the contemporary service environment. The module s designed to introduce you to basic management principles and contextualise approaches to competitive strategy and competitive advantage by examining indicative sectors across the service environment, such as: tourism, events, retail, and hospitality. You ll also look at how competitive advantage is influenced by key issues such as entrepreneurship particularly in relation to micro-business and SMEs, and how wider forces of globalisation are impacting on business strategy. Sustainable Business Management Businesses are increasingly having to recognise the importance of considering the widest range of stakeholders who may be affected by or have an influence over them, giving rise to calls for greater social corporate responsibility. The wide impact of businesses on the environment has also highlighted their need to ensure the longterm viability of resources used. The purpose of this module is to enable you to become familiar with the ideological underpinnings, principles and practices relating to sustainable business management. You ll gain a coherent and functional understanding of this concept within a range of business and operational environments. Data Analysis for Research The acquisition, manipulation, interpretation and presentation of data are important skills for graduates. The aim of this module is to introduce you to the use of computer-based statistical techniques for the analysis and presentation of quantitative data sources. You ll gain an appropriate link to business research, where more qualitative research methodologies will be discussed. The module s designed to reflect the lack of confidence and anxiety felt by students when dealing with statistical techniques, especially for the first time. You ll go on a structured and applied journey, starting at an introductory level looking at the rationale and contextualisation for the use of quantitative research methodologies. From here, consideration will be given to the generation and use of descriptive statistics through to the application of more advanced statistical techniques. Business Research This module will contribute to your preparation for final year project work. It introduces a range of approaches available to choose from when identifying and carrying out a business research project. While it s expected that you ll engage with the philosophical issues in research, the emphasis will be on the relationship between credibility of business proposals and well-constructed research. This module focuses more on qualitative research applications in business. 10

Managing Customer Service Customer service continues to be a core element of business and management strategy; businesses, agencies, promoting institutions and destinations seek to maintain and improve the quality and competitiveness of their products and services. Businesses also place emphasis on market segmentation and meeting the needs of an increasingly quality-conscious consumer market. The aim of this module is to introduce you to the principles and practices related to the development and management of customer service strategies highlighting the need to consistently and creatively exceed the expectations of the customer. Managing Mega Event Destinations The staging of large-scale mega events is now regarded as a key catalyst for regeneration and development strategies in cities. The aim of this module is to introduce you to the challenges and opportunities faced by destinations that use mega events as part of their development strategies. This will provide you with: a detailed understanding and appreciation of the range of urban tourism environments that have applied this approach; the inherent management challenges that these destinations face; and the strategic responses that have ensued in response. Field trips to and case studies from the national and international tourism environment will be used to emphasise the distinctive nature of mega event destinations. Year Three Module Information Rural Tourism Rural areas have undergone a rapid and profound social and economic transformation in the last 25 years. Amid economic restructuring processes, tourism s emerged as a vital component within the rural economy. Rural tourism therefore has considerable economic, social, cultural, political and environmental significance. The aim of this module s to examine the development, character, operation, impact and management of tourism in rural areas. Sustainable Destination Management We ll encourage you to reflect on the management principles and practices identified in earlier modules at Levels one and two. You ll capitalise on your knowledge and expertise when thinking about the operational dimensions of preparing a sustainable and integrated destination management plan. This module specifically focuses on the practical realities of creating and managing a sustainable destination environment, and its links to other policy areas. Nature, Ecotourism and Adventure Tourism This module introduces you to the diversity of the Nature, Eco and Adventure Tourism (NEAT) industry and develops the practical skills required to audit NEAT resources and create packages focused on NEAT products. You ll learn how this industry has developed particularly in relation to the emergence of the Nature, Eco and Adventure Tourist and consider the distinctive characteristics of nature-based tourism, ecotourism and adventure tourism. The module will highlight the operational and management issues 12

The Complete University Guide

related to NEAT, with emphasis on their impacts and management approaches while drawing on examples from the domestic and international tourism industry to highlight best practice. Management Project This module has a crucial role within the programme of study as it provides the opportunity to research an area of particular interest within an appropriate business, public sector or third sector context. The module s designed to make a major contribution to your professional and intellectual development. The project provides a vehicle for you to demonstrate the extent to which you ve managed the final transition from a tutor-led approach to student-centred learning. Work placement You will have the opportunity to gain work-place experience working with local tourism-related business and organisations on live projects based on a one-day per week placement. What our students say Fieldtrips were a valuable tool to enable us to gather first-hand experience from people involved on the ground. It was helpful to meet so many visiting speakers. Seeing theory in practice puts the past three years in context and demonstrated the fragmented but very inter-related aspect of tourism. Dealing with the industry on projects is very helpful as we are going out into the industry in a few months time so getting prepared to deal with various industry members in a suitable professional manner is always beneficial. Having such experience to add to a CV will help us stand out in the jobs market. Using real attractions for assessments makes the experience more realistic. Being able to go to the site and experience the area first hand makes the module more interesting and challenging, and it also allows us to see the industry working which adds to our skills and experience for when we graduate. The areas our graduates have progressed into include: Hotel management Local and regional economic development Customer service Heritage management Experience management Events management Destination management Postgraduate study 14

Programme Co-ordinator for Tourism Management Dr Andrew Clegg Principal Lecturer for Learning and Teaching Andy Clegg started his academic career in 1989, registering for a BSc (Hons) Geography degree at the University of Plymouth. In 1993, Andrew returned to Plymouth to start his PhD, looking at the 'Recession as an Agent in the Restructuring of Tourist Accommodation in Torbay'. From this point Andy has established a track record of working with different sectors of the tourism industry, developing a specialist interest in Sustainable Destination Management, around which our degree programme is structured. Andy's teaching is informed by his external engagement as a tourism consultant, and by his role as the Chair of Visit Chichester, the Destination Marketing Organisation for Chichester. Within the last year Andy has completed work on the Destination Management Plans for Chichester District, and the Manhood Peninsula. I have been able to use my industry experience to really enhance and transform your learning experience at the University of Chichester. I put particular emphasis on merging theory with practice to deliver a very applied and action-based approach to learning and teaching which, underpinned by my industry experience, seeks to stimulate your interest, curiousity and engagement, and above all enhances your employability at the end of your degree. Andy is also an award-winning and highly respected trainer for the Regional Tourist Board Partnership, and the current national master trainer for Welcome Management. Andy has developed a specific interest in supporting sustainable tourism, and in 2009 he won a National Training Award for Education and Training delivery focusing on green business accreditation. The quality of Andy's teaching is recognised within the University through his position as a Principal Lecturer for Learning and Teaching, in which he has responsibility for helping to enhance the overall quality of the student experience. 15

Graduate view Having the opportunity to work with VisitChichester allowed me to gain a more practical understanding of how a destination management organisation is operated and has encouraged me to work for a tourist board. I am now working for Tourism South East, where I am responsible for building new relationships with tourism businesses and offering them marketing, training, and networking support. Holly Austen BA (Hons) Tourism Management, now working at Tourism South East 16
