1 Job Description Job Title: Class Leader Managed By: Deputy Headteacher This job description has been compiled to reflect responsibilities listed within the Teacher Standards document. Job Purpose: To plan for the teaching and learning of the National Curriculum and Examination courses within English in line with the school s curriculum, planning, teaching and learning and assessment policies. To undertake the pastoral and the administrative duties for the students in the class. To enact and fulfil all policies throughout the school. To act as a tutor for students including undertaking assessment, tracking progress and personal development as well as daily contact with parents/carers. Principal Accountabilities: To carry out the duties of a class teacher as set out in the School Teachers Pay and Conditions Document To ensure that classroom practice is a model of excellence with regard to teaching and learning, classroom management, assessment and relationships with children. To deliver outcomes for all students that are at least in line with prior attainment enabling access to a full range of Post 16 options. To develop and sustain educational continuity and progression in learning experiences and high pupil expectation. To work alongside other class leaders to develop the very best possible literacy practice both inside and out of the classroom. To assist and support supply staff. To promote and encourage good relationships between parents/carers, the community and the school. To monitor and report on the progress of students in English and undertake intervention as required to address gaps and proactively intervene to ensure the best quality teaching, learning and student progress, in conjunction with the system within the school. To keep up to date professionally. To work as part of a team to ensure that the best opportunities are offered to our pupils. To undertake other responsibilities in the school, as agreed with the Headteacher. Key Duties: The post holder will be a role model of excellent practice in a secondary SEMH setting for all staff and children in addition to: Teaching excellent English and Literacy lessons across the full age range of students. Supporting the work identified within the School Improvement Plan with a specific focus on developing a reading for pleasure strategy across the school. Core Management Contribute to achieving the Vision and Aims of the school. To understand the purposes, scope, structure and balance of the National Curriculum and Examination courses. To be aware of the breadth of content covered by the National Curriculum and Examination courses. To be able to respond with curiosity, empathy and resilience to students. To understand, track and respond to students need to secure appropriate, age-expected progression from KS2 through KS4. To keep abreast of inspection evidence, research information, school self-evaluation etc, on teaching secondary pupils and know how to use this to inform and improve practice. To establish and maintain a purposeful working atmosphere. To prepare reports and update records, as required. To take responsibility for accessing resources appropriate for the age range taught To be aware of age related expectations in pupil progress and to have an understanding of pupil tracking. To ensure that pupils are challenged and supported to achieve their potential through; o Inspiring trust and confidence o Building team commitment o Engaging and motivating pupils o Analytical thinking, which maximises the learning situation o Positive action to improve the quality of pupils learning.

2 To take part in EHCP Annual Reviews and termly updates to Sky Learning Plans. To support the day to day management of pupil behaviour within the framework of the Behaviour Policy To ensure that stereotyped views, bullying or harassment are challenged by following the school's policies and procedures. To support pupils who take part and reintegrate into mainstream provision. To support the admission and induction of new pupils to the school/class. To effectively and sensitively communicate with pupils to support their learning. To ensure that the inclusion of all pupils in learning activities is promoted and supported. To participate in Performance Reviews. To continue to develop and maintain professional characteristics. To access and participate in team coaching for the benefit of your own welfare and the welfare of the team together with the development of reflective practice. To prepare young people for terminal exams, through individual and group support. To research and understand exam syllabus. Welfare To understand how pupils learning is affected by their physical, intellectual, emotional and social development. To establish a safe environment that supports learning and in which all pupils feel secure and confident. To support the physical, emotional and educational development of all pupils. To work in line with our Safeguarding Policy for the protection of all pupils. To attend to the personal and social needs of our pupils. People Management The class teacher directs the work of the class TAs in line with the Teachers Standards. Curriculum To be able to deliver progression at least in line with prior attainment in pupils learning in English through: Identifying clear teaching objectives and content, appropriate to the subject matter and the pupils being taught, and specifying how these will be taught and assessed. Setting tasks for whole class, individual and group work, which challenge pupils and ensure high levels of pupil interest. Setting appropriate and demanding expectations for pupils learning, motivation and presentation of work. Setting clear targets for pupils learning, building on prior attainment, and ensuring that pupils are aware of what they are being asked to do. Providing structure for lessons through short, medium and long term planning, which maintains motivation and challenge for pupils. Planning opportunities to contribute to pupils personal, spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Ensuring effective teaching of whole classes and of groups and individuals so that teaching objectives are met and best use is made of available teaching time. Working with other professionals who may be involved in work with a pupil. Setting high expectations for pupils behaviour, establishing and maintaining a good standard of discipline through well focussed teaching and positive and productive relationships. Assessing how well learning objectives have been achieved and use this assessment to inform planning, in line with our Assessment Policy. Marking and monitoring pupils work in line with our Responding to Pupils Work Policy. To ensure that work planned for pupils meets their learning needs as well as challenging them. To set challenging but realistic targets for pupils, both for individual pupils and for groups of pupils. To understand the expected demands of pupils in relation to level descriptors or end of key stage description. To understand and know how national, local and benchmarking data can be used to set clear targets for pupil achievement. To ensure that curricular targets as well as personal targets are set for improving pupil achievement. Finance To take responsibility for any budgets in line with your area of responsibility. SEN To identify pupils who have special learning needs, in line with our Special Educational Needs Policy, and identify those pupils who are very able, ensuring that they receive appropriate programmes of study. To plan and implement the Sky Learning Plans of the pupils within the class. To review progress of Sky Learning Plans in line with our Strategic Overview and outcomes of annual review or other multi professional meetings, events in a students life or change of needs. Attend and actively participate in Annual Reviews and all meetings, including reintegrations, involving students in tutor or teaching groups.

3 Buildings To establish a celebratory and motivating environment, in line with our Learning Environment Policy. To maintain a positive and ordered physical learning environment both within the classroom and around the school generally Health and Safety To be familiar with subject-specific health and safety requirements and plan lessons to avoid potential hazards. To be familiar with health and safety practices to ensure that the classroom environment is a safe place to work for both adults and pupils. To work within the Health and Safety Policy of the school and the Local Authority. To work within the policy for physical intervention as outlined by Team-Teach. To undertake the prescribed regularity of training for the upkeep of Team-Teach certificatation. To develop and regularly update as appropriate pupil risk assessments. To report any health and safety issues through the appropriate process.. School Events To participate in meeting with colleagues and Open Mornings with parents/carers. To attend Staff Meetings and to lead meetings, as required. To contribute to school celebrations/meetings/events. To contribute to the system of whole school rewards. Parents and Carers To keep parents/carers informed about their child. To contribute to Home/School liaison for the benefit of ensuring good communication. To welcome parents/carers during Open Mornings. Links and Liaison To act as a good ambassador for the school within the community and within the Local Authority. To liaise with colleagues in other schools or in other agencies for the benefit of children. To attend multi-professional meetings. To welcome governors into the school and to report to the Governing Body as required. To liaise with other professionals in respect of the duties and responsibilities of the post. Professional Expectations Continuing opportunities for CPD Opportunities for reflection through onsite supervision, line management and coaching. PPA time with the class team. Management Time, so far as is reasonably practicable, for tasks that have been negotiated with the Headteacher. Teachers who also receive an Upper Pay Spine payment are expected in line with the Teaching Standards to demonstrate whole school impact. This will be reviewed as part of the PM schedule.

Experience Evidence of continuous INSET and commitment to further professional development Accredited Nurture Practitioner training Documentary evidence Experience of teaching English and Literacy across the age range. Experience of teaching KS4 qualifications including Entry Level, Functional Skills and GCSE Excellent practice in personalising and differentiating for students across the ability and need range. Have experience of working with other adults, support staff, teachers and other professionals in the classroom. Experience of leadership of curricular and extra curricular activities. Hold a specific qualification or accreditation linked to SEN, Literacy or English. Knowledge and Understanding Good working knowledge of the programmes of studies in the National Curriculum for English. Able to use ICT skills effectively for themselves and for teaching across a wide range of subjects. Understanding of assessment for learning and its use to raise standards in all subjects/ areas of learning. Able to use effectively different teaching and learning styles. An understanding of the role of parents and the community in school improvement and how this can be promoted and developed in an inner city setting. Ability to make use of appropriate data and other evidence to analyse the performance of pupils and set targets for improvement. Skills and Abilities
