3 Identifying and supporting speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) in Early Years Foundation Stage (under 5 years) 80 Free for Children Centres A two day course 9.30 am - 4 pm and a ½ day Tutorial 9.30 am - 12 pm Running Monthly (excluding August and September 2018) Course Outline: To have an understanding of Speech and Language development in children of 0-5 years. How to identify children with possible difficulties in understanding and using language. An understanding of the wider impact of Speech and Language difficulties. Explore strategies and activities that can be used in pre-school settings to influence language development. 11 Autism Spectrum Disorders in Girls 80 A one day course 9.30am pm Wednesday 7th March 2018 Course Aims/Outline To gain an understanding of how Autism presents in girls To understand how autism in girls can present differently to boys To learn about strategies to support communication and interaction To find out about useful resources Class teachers, SENCos, Support Staff and other professionals Entry Requirements We recommend participants attend any of the Identifying and Supporting speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) courses Certificate Understand the range of communication, interaction and behavioural difficulties associated with ASD in girls Identify strategies for supporting girls with ASD I found this training session really useful to share with my colleagues P9

12 Using Visuals to Support Communication 80 A one day course 10am - 3pm and a half day Tutorial 10am - 12pm Friday 19th January 2018 Tutorial: Friday 9th March 2018 Course Aims/Outline Develop basic knowledge of a range of visual support systems including Makaton signing, PECS, Schedules and Communication Books Consider their use in routines and class environments Learn about adapting your communication style to support children s learning and communication Practise and discuss practical strategies in the above areas Develop action plan of ideas to implement in own setting Teachers, Support staff, Early Years Practitioners and Parents/Carers Entry Requirements None Certificate - issued following attendance at tutorial. Understand the purpose of a range of visual support systems and their use to support children s communication at different levels Identify how to use visual support systems in a child s learning environment Identify communication strategies that support the communication and physical environment Apply strategies to specific case examples Produce a plan to implement specific strategies appropriate to own setting Gave me a better understanding of different methods of communication It was good learning how to engage non-verbally and use positive encouragement P10

13 Lego Therapy Workshop 30 Twilight session pm Thursday 19 th October 2017 OR Wednesday 2nd May 2018 Lego Therapy is a simple, effective approach that uses Lego to help children and young people develop their attention & listening, turn taking, communication and interaction skills. It is relevant for use with children with a wide range of needs and across a range of settings. Course Aims/Outline To introduce participants to the background and principles of Lego Therapy To identify the skills needed to carry out Lego Therapy To think creatively about how to use Lego Therapy in your own setting Class teachers, SENCos, Support Staff and Parents/Carers Other professionals working with children and young people with Social Communication and language difficulties. 14 PECS Awareness for parents & professionals 80 A one day course 10am pm Thursday 30th November 2017 This is a practical introduction to the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). This awareness day aims to enable you to help children in the use of this system with support from your Speech & Language Therapist or other professionals. These professionals are fully trained in the implementation of PECS by Pyramid Education Consultants. Information on the full training provided by Pyramid Education Consultants will be provided on the day. We will discuss all 6 Phases of PECS. Talking Mats Training 50 Half day course 9.30am pm Thursday 15th March Talking Mats is a simple, effective approach that uses picture symbols to help children and young people express their views about topics such as school, home life, hobbies and friends. It is relevant for use with children with a wide range of needs and across a range of settings, for example in schools, nurseries and home. Course Aims/Outline To introduce participants to the background and principles of Talking Mats To identify the skills needed to carry out a Talking Mat To think creatively about how to use Talking Mats in your own setting Parents/ carers, teachers, support staff, SENCos and any other professionals who would like a framework for consulting children and young people Entry Requirements Participants need to have a basic understanding of communication skills Certificate Identify and explore relevant topics for a Talking Mat Understand and use the Talking Mats framework P12

15 Makaton Workshops Makaton is a signing system used to support the development of language in those with communication difficulties. The Makaton Foundation Workshop for Professionals 125 (Cost is inclusive of course materials) A two day course 9.30am 4.00pm Thursday 23rd - Friday 24th November 2017 Course Aims/Outline To introduce participants to the signs and symbols from stages of the Makaton core vocabulary To introduce participants to ways of using Makaton signs and symbols in educational settings To provide information on the use and purpose of Makaton, and to give an overview of an alternative system of communication Professionals who need to use Makaton in their work Entry Requirements Participants need to have an understanding of early communication skills Workshop manuals Pocket book of signs 1 Pocket book of symbols 1 Certificate Use stages 1-4 of the Makaton core vocabulary (signs and symbols) in their workplace. Tutors made learning fun and easy to understand One of the best courses I ve attended I recommend it to others P13

16 Makaton Taster Sessions FREE A 1½ hour session on the following dates (various locations, please call for details): Dates: Thursday 8th June am Wednesday 9th August pm Thursday 5th October pm Thursday 7th December am Monday 26th February pm Friday 18th May pm Friday 20th July am This is a fun and interactive session for all interested in learning about Makaton. 17 How to run targeted groups in schools to develop speech, language and communication 50 Free to Lambeth Core Schools Time: 9.30am-12pm Dates: Monday 9th October 2017 OR Tuesday 28th November 2017 Course Outline: To learn strategies and techniques for setting up and delivering effective small groups in schools, including engaging with parents. To identify potential difficulties in delivering groups and possible solutions for these To consolidate knowledge of targeted activities that support speech, language and communication development in school-aged pupils : Early Years Foundation Staff, class teachers, SENCos, 1 Teaching assistants, Learning mentors Entry Requirements: Attendance at any of the Identifying and Supporting speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) courses : Certificates Feel confident in using strategies to manage attention and behaviour within a small group Practise strategies for supporting children with SLCN in schools Understand factors impacting on outcomes of groups Identify potential barriers and possible solutions and sources of help to run groups within school Feel very confident about running groups in the future P15

18 How to maximise children s learning through questions in the classroom 50 Free to Lambeth Core Schools Time: pm Friday 8th December 2017 OR Wednesday 7th February 2018 Course Outline: To review question frameworks used in schools To identify potential barriers to children answering questions. To practise strategies for supporting children to successfully answer questions : Class teachers (particularly NQTs in mainstream schools), Higher level TAs, SENCOs/ Inclusion Managers/ Senior Leadership Team Entry Requirements: none (you might want to see our courses on Identifying and Supporting Children with SLCN) : Certificate Briefly outline different question frameworks Identify reasons children sometimes struggle to respond to questions Select and use strategies to support children to successfully answer questions Easier to understand students difficulties when answering questions Was really useful finding out about different techniques to use in class P16

19 Additional Training on Request ELKLAN Speech and Language Support for under 5s (Accredited Course through Open College Network South West) (OCNSW) Children s Centre Staff (To cover cost of Accreditation and course manual) 400 non Children s Centre Staff Ten 2½ hour sessions (participants must attend all sessions) Course Outline To equip staff to be more effective in supporting children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) To enable participants to identify the needs of the child and give practical strategies to support the child more effectively Early Years Practitioners Accreditation certificate and course manual Identify and effectively meet the needs of children with (SLCN) Make more accurate observations to share with parents and other agencies Promote collaborative working amongst practitioners Make appropriate referrals to Speech and Language Therapy Please note : Participants are expected to complete a portfolio (independently not during course sessions) to gain accreditation. 20 Early Years In-Setting Training The following packages can be delivered as bespoke training in your setting. These packages are offered free to Children s Centres (CCs) as part of the CC commissioning (for a minimum of 6 participants). For all other EY/nursery settings, please contact your link SLT or gst-tr.contactslt@nhs.net to discuss commissioning training or other options for purchasing SLT input to suit the needs of individual settings. Training Sessions 1 hour sessions (combine 3 for a half-day package) Ages & Stages of Speech & Language Development Introduction to become familiar with the ages & stages and different skills involved in speech and language development. Understand when and how to refer a child to Speech & Language Therapy. Developing Group Time Introduction to planning and running fun group times for all abilities; including how to run an interactive circle-time and effectively use visual timetables. Assessing Key Word Understanding Introduction to how children s understanding develops and obtain the tools to effectively assess their understanding. Supporting Expressive Language Development Introduction to how children s expres- supporting the acquisition of these sive language develops and become confident in skills. Using Visuals to Support Language Development Learn about the different types/levels of visual supports and how to implement their use in early-years settings, to support children s understanding. Delivering Health Promotion Messages Staff will become confident in sharing the key speech and language messages with parents and carers, using the Talk and Play Everyday (TAPE) leaflet series. These include: What communication to expect at each age/stage - Talk & Play Every Day leaflet Bilingualism and language learning - Keep your Language Alive leaflet Reducing TV watching and screen-time - Switch it off and Talk Together leaflet Benefits of reading, rhyming and singing songs - Read and Rhyme Any Time leaflet Leaflets can be found at: http: // Adult Child Interaction (1 hour OR Enhanced) 1 hour session: Brief overview of how an adult s interaction style impacts on a child s speech and language development. Reflect on own current practice. The enhanced (1/2 or full day) package provides in-depth knowledge about How & Why young children communicate, as well as their different interaction styles and the roles adult s play. Understand the principles and key strategies of Adult-Child Interaction (ACI) and it s research. Learn how to use the ACI Tally count to support your own practice and those of the team within your setting. P18

21 Early Years In-Setting Training (continued ) Training Sessions Half /Full-day enhanced packages Offer more in-depth information & detailed learning objectives Supporting Speech and Language Development in Early Years Develop understanding of speech and language development and build confidence in learning how to support children with speech and language difficulties, planning activities and using strategies to support children s speech and language development. Training will also include: Understanding ages & stages of speech and language development. Using Key Word assessment to assess a child s understanding. How to support children s expressive language skills. Developing a personal action plan for using learning from session in every day practice. Understand when and how to refer a child to Speech & Language Therapy Interactive Circle Times (Pre-requisite to have previous attendance at the Adult Child Interaction (Enhanced) course) Understand the basics and increase confidence in planning and running fun group times for all abilities; including tips on interactive circle-time and effectively use visual timetables. Understand the importance of structured activities for learning language such as circle-times and develop confidence and creativity in planning and running these. Learn how to base circle -times on the unique skills and interests of the children within the setting. Share ideas with colleagues about quality and successful circle-time practice. Participants will take away at least 3 new, non-book based activities and plans to implement within their own setting. Talking Tables Staff will be familiar with the Talking Tables approach and how it can be used to support children s speech and language development. Talking Tables will be set up in the setting by a designated member of staff with support from the Speech and Language Therapist. The designated member of staff will be supported to reflect on current practice and create a plan for development. The effect of Talking Tables within the setting will be evaluated with support from the Speech and Language Therapist. Chatterbox Please note, this is an enhanced package requiring several weeks of hour or 1/2 days. It is expected that the setting will take responsibility for the ongoing running of this group and that it will continue after the initial block of SLT support. Enhanced at least a day over several sessions. Staff will support the planning, set up and modelling of a weekly stay and play session (for children and their parents) with a focus on speech and language development. The setting can advertise this session as being set up with support from the Speech and Language Therapy Service. P19 P19
