2 Breakfast Starting the day with a good breakfast is important to help your child do their best at school! Students may buy breakfast from the cafeteria in the morning, if necessary. Students who buy breakfast are dismissed from the bus first. They eat in the cafeteria and come to class when finished. Students are still expected to get their morning work done! If you wish to change what you indicated on the note at the beginning of the year, please let me know.

3 Lunch Money Send on Mondays, if possible. Send in baggie labeled with your child s name and teacher s name in their blue folder. Lunch money will be sent to the cafeteria where it will be put on your child s account. Our school has instituted a policy this year that students may NOT bring edible birthday treats. But you may still send a non-food treat if you like. (small prize, stickers, etc)

4 EZ Pay Link is on the Monroe Local School s homepage. Can be used to manage breakfast/lunch money accounts and to pay fees. Fees are probably not yet posted. They are $50 for K. You will receive fee statements with report cards. It will send you a notice when your account is low. Please me if you need your student s ID number to set up your account.

5 Transportation If your child is a frequent car rider, they will give you a blue pick-up card at dismissal. This is your ticket to pick up your child. If you ever need to change bus drop off or pick up address, please contact the bus garage AND the school. If your child will be a car rider, send a note in their blue folder. Bus Garage:

6 Monroe Primary Newsletter MPS Newsletters can be found: on the school website Through updates (sign up online) or hardcopy (if requested on school forms).

7 Mrs. Wilson s Newsletters My newsletters will come home weekly in your child s blue folder and be posted on the class website. Read to check weekly goals, poem, readers, and see what skills we are working on in reading, writing, math, and social studies. Updates from Mrs. Wilson will also be sent periodically, as needed.

11 Class Dojo Please connect to Dojo through parent accounts. Let me know if you did not receive the link/code to sign up! You can see your child s specific behaviors each day, notice patterns in behavior, view our class story, and receive individual messages and pictures from me.

12 Shape Up Chart Behavior Calendars Students will move bees for more severe misbehaviors (hitting, name calling, etc.) OR if they receive too many red points on dojo. Students will move to blue when they receive several/the most green points. Please check each day. Color will match child s behavior. Teacher will send a note or call home if on red or black.

13 Mrs. Gehm! You may hear about Mrs. Gehm at home! She is our trusty classroom volunteer. Mrs. Gehm, my mother, is a retired educator. She comes in to help out 1-2 times a week. She also subs for me whenever possible. It is great to know the students are in good hands when I have to be out.

14 Report Cards First report cards will come home in October. Items assessed match with standards. We spread out the assessments throughout the year and will assess new skills each quarter and reassess skills as necessary. Skills assessed each quarter correspond to weekly goals in the newsletter. Students can receive the following marks E-excels at grade level standard S- satisfactory: meets grade level standard P- progressing with grade level standard N- not progressing with grade level standard

15 Conferences Fall Conferences I will meet with everyone. October 25 & November 1 Conference Schedule will be available tonight for you to check your time or sign up if you still need to. Winter Conferences I will meet on an as needed basis. February 21 & 28 You will receive a note stating your time in advance.

20 Orton Gillingham/Letters Students will learn 1 letter a week. We focus on the name of the letter, the letter sound, words that begin with that letter and how to write the capital and lowercase letters. Go over penmanship papers that come home with your child. Review how to write letters correctly. Letter Friends and letter friend stories help us learn and practice sequencing & retelling.

21 Writer s Workshop Students write everyday. Right now we are focusing on: Making pictures tell story Adding details (No scribbling!) Sounding out words Topics we will cover this year include: Multi-page stories Writing personal narratives Writing non-fiction text How-to Writing Students will meet with the teacher for an individual writing conference once a week. Students will work to meet individual writing goals assigned by the teacher.

25 Kindergarten Sight Words There are 40 sight words that will be assessed for report cards. Students should have complete mastery of these 40 words. They should recognize them quickly by sight in flash cards and in books (without sounding out). They should use and spell them correctly in their writing. There are also 30 supplemental sight words. These include number & color words. These are words students need to know and recognize, but will be reviewed/taught again in later grades. These will not be assessed for report cards, although I will still assess them on weekly sight word checklists as they are taught. *At Home: Print and practice sight words flash cards at home. Practice any flash cards that come home on Wednesdays with your child. Go over sight words checklists with your child at the end of the week. * Red Words are words that can not be spelled phonetically.

26 Reader s Workshop Students use books (on their level) in their book baggies. Students complete reading activities throughout the week. Read to Self Read to Someone Write About Reading Word Work Guided Reading Groups Shared Reading We learn through reading: Big Books Poem Read Alouds We work on: Concepts of print (reading left to right, pointing at each word, etc.) Finding words we know Retelling and Comprehension. Making predictions Author, Illustrator, Publisher, dedication page, title page, and the spine of the book

30 Math (Envisions) Students receive a whole group lesson, then practice math skills at Math Workshop (centers). The Whole Group Lesson includes: Problem Solving, Visual Learning (short video), and Guided/Independent Practice (in workbooks) Some math topics we are/will be working on this year include: Writing & Counting Numbers 0-20 Comparing Numbers Addition/Subtraction 2D & 3D Shapes Measuring Length, Weight, Capacity Counting & Classifying Data Math Homework Packets will come home at the beginning of each topic. If returned, students will receive a reward. It is recommended to work on 1 pg. a night.
