Nouns (Common Nouns) Warm-Up 1 Examples: Person brother, repairman, actor Place stadium, country, park Thing plate, bird, airplane Write five nouns for each category. Person Place Thing Select a noun from each category. Use each noun in a sentence. (person) (place) (thing) Pick one of the nouns from one of the categories. On a separate sheet of paper, write a paragraph about that topic. Exchange papers with a classmate. 4 Name Date Warm-Up 2 Nouns (Proper Nouns) A proper noun names a specific person, place, or thing. A proper noun always begins with a capital letter. Look at the examples below. Common Noun Proper Noun Person: brother, repairman, actor Sid, Mr. Harris, Ivana Starr Place: stadium, country, park Grizzly Stadium, Mexico, Woodward Park Thing: airplane, statue, ship The Spruce Goose, Statue of Liberty, The Mayflower Underline each subject s common noun. On the line, write a proper noun to replace the common noun. Example: The dog placed first in the dog show. Mr. Fido 1. Our neighbor bakes the best cookies. 2. The team was in last place. 3. The two girls ran for class president. 4. The game lasted a long time. 5. The ship sailed off on its maiden voyage. 6. The troop hiked the steep trail. 7. The ride was scary and dangerous. 8. The bird squawked all night and all day. 9. The family walks after dinner. 10. The woman took my temperature. Read the paragraph. Draw a line through the common nouns that can be changed into proper nouns. Then write a proper noun above each line. My grandparents live in the city. Their home is on a street near a store. Each day, they walk to the nearby park. On their way back home, they stop to pick up a copy of the morning paper. On a separate sheet of paper, write a paragraph about something you did with your grandparents or another relative. Circle all of the proper nouns used in the paragraph. Examples: Person players, doctors, astronauts Place mountains, beaches, schools Thing forks, pictures, computers Write five plural nouns for each category. Person Place Thing Read the paragraph. Circle the plural nouns. The telephone was ringing all day. Robert Smith, the secretary, was busy taking messages and transferring phone calls. At the end of the day, Robert put away his pens and message pads. He wiggled his fingers and stretched. It had been a busy day. What would it be like to read a story or to write a story using only plural nouns? On a separate sheet of paper, try writing a story using only plural nouns. Share the story with a classmate.
