4 Introduction Link to Literacy is a comprehensive, intermediate English Language Development (ELD) program for English learners in grades 3 and up who struggle in the areas of language, vocabulary, and reading. Intensive Eplicit Direct Instruction lessons cover a range of topics such as: using simple verb tenses, determining the meaning of words using contet clues, and determining the main purpose of a tet. Flashcards are also incorporated throughout the curriculum to address topics like antonyms, homophones, and multiple-meaning words. Online assessments are scheduled in regular intervals to check the understanding of students using the Link to Literacy curriculum. DataWORKS Educational Research 2016 All rights reserved. 1

Vocabulary: including contet clues, homographs, homophones, prefies, suffies, signal words, synonyms, word choice, metaphors, and similes. Reading Informational Tet: including following multiple-step instructions, answering questions, determining the main idea (both stated and implied), analyzing chronological order tet, interpreting diagrams, citing tetual evidence, and planning and writing opinion pieces. Reading Literature Tet: including eplaining inferences, analyzing characterization, determining themes, and planning and writing narratives. 9 Level F Through eplicit direct instruction, Level E students are taught the following literacy elements: Language: including pronoun-antecedent agreement, verb tenses, abstract nouns, comparative and superlative adjectives, prepositional phrases, epanding sentences with noun phrases, adverbs, compound sentences, and clauses. Vocabulary: including signal words and phrases, compare-and-contrast words, word choice, antonyms, contet clues, multiple-meaning words, synonyms, prefies, suffies, and symbolism. Reading Informational Tet: including analyzing chronological order tet, features of informational tet, analyzing main ideas (both stated and implied), analyzing sequential order patterns, analyzing compare-and-contrast tet structure, interpreting visual information, and planning and writing opinion pieces. Reading Literature Tet: including eplaining inferences, determining themes, analyzing how elements of a story interact, and planning and writing narratives. 10 Program Layout The Link to Literacy program is an online, browser-based program. No need to download or install any software. Just click on the day and start teaching. The curriculum is composed of lessons that are organized by weeks. An online pacing calendar is provided for each week. The pacing calendar is divided into four, nine-week sections with a total of 36 weeks of instruction. Each lesson has been given two days for completion (Learning Objective to Closure), and the content is reviewed again in subsequent days and weeks. The lessons contain components from Eplicit Direct Instruction (EDI). These components help guide and support instruction. Quizzes and assessments are provided with the program. The quizzes and assessments are available online. Answers for student practice are animated on the slides throughout the curriculum. Students are encouraged to use whiteboards to give responses. 12 Flashcards The Link to Literacy program includes flashcards to address a variety of common vocabulary words including: antonyms, regular and irregular verbs, homophones, phrasal verbs, prefies, common nouns, and multiple-meaning words. Links to the flashcards are provided within the pacing calendar. Which set of flashcards to use each week is up to the discretion of the teacher and the needs of the students. It is recommended to make the flashcards a fun, interactive learning eperience. For eample, you can split the class into teams and the first team to hold up the correct response on their whiteboard gets a point! First team to 20 points wins!
