1 & HPISD FLES Curriculum - Kindergarten UNIT NAME ESTIMATED DURATION 9 WEEK PERIOD UNIT 1: VAMOS A SER AMIGOS (AP Theme: Personal and Public Identities) Unit Overview 4 WEEKS In this unit students learn the basic language skills and vocabulary needed to socialize within the classroom setting. This includes greetings, introductions, and farewells. Students also learn common expressions of courtesy that demonstrate gratitude and grace. Students gain proficiency at counting 0 through 10. They learn, understand, and follow classroom commands and teacher directions. Enduring Understandings The student will understand that: Concepts Greeting and Farewells Expressions Numbers Commands Guiding/Essential Questions The way in which people greet and introduce themselves varies between cultures. The study of languages enriches students knowledge in other disciplines. Command of a language requires frequent practice; without use, language can be lost. The study of other cultural values, products, practices, and perspectives dissolves the illusion of our separateness. A globally competent citizen communicates effectively in at least one language other than English (Profile of the Learner). An effective communicator speaks clearly and articulately for varied purposes and audiences (Profile of the Learner). An effective communicator listens actively and respectfully to the opinions and perspectives of others (Profile of the Learner). Student Key Guiding Question: How do we make new friends? How do greetings and farewells differ among cultures? How does learning a second language improve interdisciplinary knowledge in mathematics? How does frequent practice of common commands, instructions, and phrases help prevent the loss of language? How does the study of other cultures dissolve our separateness? Learning Targets Proficiency Learning Targets: The student will be able to correctly say hello and goodbye to someone their own age, younger, or older.

Culture In kindergarten, students are introduced to Hispanic culture utilizing authentic resources such as art, music, poems, rhymes, stories, games, and dances. These authentic resources support the proficiency learning targets. Students gain an understanding of the relationship between the practices, products, and perspectives of Hispanic culture. (ACTFL Standards 2.1, 2.2) Formative Assessments Formative assessments are employed by the teacher during the learning process in order to modify learning activities and to improve student achievement. Teachers may use the following obtrusive, unobtrusive, and student-generated assessments during the learning process to check for understanding: Observations Questioning Practice Presentations Interpersonal Speaking Anecdotal Notes Kinesthetic Assessments Exit Slips Visual Representations Individual Whiteboard Answers Assignments ACTFL Communication Standards & Progress Indicators Summative Assessments Interpersonal: Engage in a conversation with other classmates where they effectively introduce themselves and say a farewell. Interpretive: Listen to a presentation of a classmate where they introduce their self and respond to a question about their classmate. Presentational: Present themselves effectively as they seek to open and close a functional conversation with greetings and farewells. 1.1 Interpersonal Communication-Communicate on some very familiar topics using single words and phrases that have been practiced and memorized. (ACTFL Proficiency Standard: Novice-Low) Use basic greetings and farewells to start and end a conversation. Introduce self and introduce others. Use basic courtesy phrases. 1.2 Interpretive Listening- Listen to and recognize memorized words, phrases, expressions, predictable questions and very simple sentences spoken by the teacher and supported by visuals. (NL) Understand and respond to practiced classroom directions. Listen to a classmates name and locate that familiar person.
3 Listen to numbers and locate the number. 1.3 Presentational Speaking-Present information and state vocabulary using memorized single words and phrases, when supported by visuals. (NL) Count numbers 0-10 in order. Introduce self and introduce others. Demonstrate classroom commands to classmates and to the teacher using Total Physical Response (TPR). Topics Facts Greetings and farewells (formal and informal) Formal and informal introductions Courtesy expressions used to be polite Recognizing and stating the numbers 0-10 Classroom commands, instructions, and phrases There are many ways to say hello in Spanish such as; Buenos días, Buenas tardes/noches, Qué tal?, and Hola. There are several ways to say goodbye in Spanish such as; Adiós, Hasta luego, Hasta mañana. Señor (Mister) and Señora (Mrs., Ma am) are formal forms of address for teachers and other adults. In Spanish, you address people differently based on familiarity and formality: Tú vs. Usted. The subject pronoun Tú is the register used to address friends, peers, or people with whom you are familiar. The subject pronoun usted is the register used to address adults you respect and/or do not know well. Nouns and adjectives agree in gender (feminine or masculine) and number (singular or plural). If a noun ends in o or os, it is typically considered masculine. If a noun ends in a or as, it is typically considered feminine. Each noun is assigned a definite articles (el, la, los, las) are words that mean the. Indefinite articles (un, una, unos, unas) are words that mean a, an, and some. When giving classroom commands, reflexive verbs are often utilized.
