1 Central Middle School 7th Grade Course Offerings Welcome to Central Middle School! The information provided in this book has been prepared to assist each student in selecting their courses for the upcoming school year. 2 GENERAL INFORMATION 7th Grade Course Selections All seventh grade students will be enrolled in a six hour day. Four hours will be required core classes (Math, English, Eastern Hemisphere & Life Science). Two hours will be elective classes. Students and their parents should carefully consider the curriculum offerings prior to determining course selection. The counselor will assist students and parents in pre-enrollment and in planning for the future. Consideration should be given to prior successes as well as special interests and aptitudes. Your child s instructional team will consist of the four core teachers, a counselor, and an administrator. Elective Classes Students will enroll in two hours of elective classes. Each student may choose at least one full year elective of Choir, Orchestra, or Band. Students may then choose one more full year elective or a rotation of electives which include the following classes: Physical Education, Spanish, Art, Gateway, Computer Applications, and STEM (Medical Detectives) which will rotate every 9 weeks. Seventh grade elective classes are exploratory in nature and are designed to give students an idea of which elective classes might be a fit for them as they move through Bartlesville Public Schools. Schedule Changes The class schedule for the will be constructed to fit the needs indicated by spring pre-enrollment. Students will be given a one week window to change classes at the beginning of each quarter. Schedules will not be changed after the window has closed. Advanced Classes Seventh graders have the opportunity to be considered for advanced classes in English & Math. Advanced classes are open to a student who feel he/she is capable of handling a more rigorous workload. Students who have excelled academically are encouraged to consider advanced classes. Self motivated and independent learners who are excited about challenging tasks and ideas in a subject area will succeed in these classes. Typically these classes move at a faster pace and require an increased time commitment to homework and study. Teacher recommendation is not mandatory for students to take advanced classes; however, we do find the teachers input to be very valuable. A student who signs up for an advanced course but do not meet the minimum grade criteria will have his/her schedule changed. Special Programs Title 1 Reading classes are offered for students who require additional support mastering grade level reading objectives. These students will receive extensive hands on applications to enhance their reading/spelling skills. Gifted education is provided through enrollment in Advanced courses. 3 CURRICULUM OFFERINGS Required Science Courses Life Science: This is the study of living organisms; how they carry out their life functions, and their interactions with one another and their non-living environment. The workings of the cell, classification of organisms, genetics, and population studies are explored. Eastern Hemisphere Geography: World Geography is the study of the earth s surface and the processes that shape it, the relationships between people and environments, and the connections between people and places. Students will use this geographic knowledge as a tool for understanding the concepts of economics and the impact of recent history on contemporary events. Students will focus on spatial patterns of human and physical characteristics of the world and its peoples, and will explore how these patterns form, change over time, and relate to one another in the Eastern Hemisphere. Traditional Math: 7th grade Math Students will expand and deepen their knowledge of math concepts. A mastery of basic math skills; addition, subtraction, multiplication and division is expected. In this course, students will develop and master integer operations. Fractions and decimal operations will be developed and maintained. Plane geometry on two dimensions will be developed. Additional topics include expressions, rational numbers, one step equations, percents, probability, ratios, rates, and proportions. Traditional English/Language Arts: Students will improve vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and critical literacy through a variety of reading selections. Students will develop a foundation of literature by learning literary genres, literary elements, and poetic devices. Students will also study research techniques. Students will study the writing process including grammar, usage and mechanics. Accelerated English/Language Arts: Accelerated English classes will include all of the components of the traditional course. In addition, students must read on at least the seventh grade level, have a high interest and strong aptitude for English, have an English grade of 75% or better and a teacher recommendation. Students must be able to think critically, analyze the written word, and be motivated to work outside of the classroom. Independent reading, research and writing is required, including the summer reading assignment prior to the seventh grade year. If expectations are not met, including a C or better, a student may be removed from this program. Advanced Math (Pre-Algebra): This course is a prerequisite for Algebra 1 in 8th grade. Students must maintain a 75% average at each grading period to remain in the class, and they are expected to be self-motivated. Students will take a placement test near the end of the course to determine eligibility for the Algebra 1 course. The curriculum includes: rational numbers, exponents, scientific notation, ratio, proportion, percents, equations, inequalities, graphing linear equations, and geometry.

5 FINE ARTS Full Year Science Courses (Students may choose 1 or 2) Band: 7th grade band combines all of the instruments of 6th grade band and emphasizes ensemble performance. Students interested in being part of the 7th grade band must complete beginning band or have a recommendation from the instructor to join. 7th grade band reinforces fundamental playing techniques introduced in beginning band while expanding the student s knowledge and skills in music concepts, tone production, rhythm, ear training, musical style, phrasing, expression, and ensemble performance technique. 7th grade band performs about 3-4 times throughout the school year with opportunities to participate in Honor Band auditions, Solo and Ensemble Contest, and summer band camp. Orchestra: Seventh grade orchestra students continue on with the basics learned in sixth grade. At this time they will be introduced to complex rhythms, third position, vibrato, advanced tuning, bowings, as well as advanced musicianship skills such as listening for balance, tone, chord tuning and much more. Seventh grade students will perform in two major concerts. In addition to that they will perform for the academic awards night and two large group contests. They will individually be able to attend District Solo and Ensemble contest in the spring and All District Honors orchestra in the fall. Those who are accepted by audition will be able to participate in the clinic in November. Choir: This class requires teacher approval. Choir is a class designed to help students improve their singing technique including posture, breathing, diction, blend, harmony, and tone production. Class instruction stresses the study of all classifications of choral literature. Attendance at public performances outside of class time is required as part of the class assignment. There are approximately 4 required evening performances and one required choral contest during the year with the option to participate in honor choir auditions and Solo Contest.

6 REVOLVING ELECTIVES 9-Week Courses Science (Enrollment is dependent on class size) Physical Education: Seventh grade students will participate in physical activities and health classes throughout the semester. Physical activities will include life long sports/activities, team sports, and personal fitness. Students will learn to take responsibility for their own health through a variety of class activities. Students will learn about nutrition, substance abuse, making positive health choices, and other health related issues. Students will be required to dress out as this promotes positive personal hygiene. STEM (Medical Detectives): Students play the role of real-life medical detectives as they analyze genetic testing results to diagnose disease and study DNA evidence found at a crime scene. They solve medical mysteries through hands-on projects and labs, investigate how to measure and interpret vital signs, and learn how the systems of the human body work together to maintain health. Spanish: Students will explore vocabulary themes such as food, colors, numbers, weather and school to enable them to begin basic communication. Vocabulary will become more in depth introducing vocabulary that will prepare them for Spanish I. They will play lots of games to reinforce the vocabulary they are learning and participate in cultural activities, music and art appreciation. Art: Elements of Art and Principles of Design are further explored in both two dimensional and three dimensional art projects. One point perspective drawing, colored pencils, scratch art, sculpture, printmaking, watercolors, and still life with oil pastels are explored with proper technique stressed. The class objectives are derived from the state PASS objectives. An art supply list will be provided and suggested for purchase. Gateway: Gateway is an activity-oriented middle school curriculum a program designed to help students in grades six through eight explore math, science, and technology. There are five independent, nineweek units; schools are expected to offer a minimum of two units, Design and Modeling and Automation and Robotics. Most schools elect to offer four or more of the following: Design and Modeling The Magic of Electrons The Science of Technology Automation and Robotics Flight and Space Green Architecture Computer Application: This is a project-based class. This class begins with computer safety and internet skills. Computer skills taught in 6th grade are reviewed and are explored more in depth. Students are also introduced to spreadsheets. Students will also practice keyboarding skills. Photo editing will be introduced.
