The first few chapters of this course recalls high school physics with more scientific notation. However, this course is also materialized with new subjects to provide the students the necessary basis for their future engineering classes. Having completed this course, students will be able to establish a cross reference between the fundamental physics laws and the real-world applications. This course includes the topics mostly related with mechanics part of fundamental physics. These topics are; significant figures, units and unit analysis, vectors, motion in one dimension, motion in multi dimensions, ewton s Laws and their applications, work and kinetic energy, potential energy and conservation of energy, momentum and conservation of momentum, rotation of rigid bodies and dynamics of rotational motion. Bu kurs, genel anlamda temel fiziğin mekanik konularını içermektedir. Bu konular; anlamlı sayılar, birimler ve birim analizi, vektörler, tek boyutlu hareket, çok boyutlu hareket, ewton un yasaları ve uygulamaları, iş ve kinetik enerji, enerjinin korunumu, momentum ve momentumun korunumu, katı cisimlerin dönmesi, dönme dinamiğidir. Upon successful completion of the course, the learner is expected to be able to: 1. Examining the physics results by unit analysis 2. Understand the basic operations with vectors (scalar and vector products) 3. Understand the kinematics in multi dimensions and direct applications of ewton's laws to solve the fundamental physics problems
2 4. Concept of energy, momentum, impulse and conservation laws 5. Know mechanics of rotating rigid bodies and dynamics of rotation Relation to Program Outcomes and Competences: =one S=Supportive H=Highly Related Program Outcomes and Competences Level Assessed by 1. Adequate knowledge in mathematics, science and mechanical engineering subjects H pertaining to the relevant discipline; ability to use theoretical and applied information in these areas to model and solve engineering problems. 2. Ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex mechanical engineering problems; ability to select and apply proper analysis and modeling methods for this purpose. 3. Ability to design a complex system, process, device or product under realistic constraints and conditions (e.g., economic and environmental issues, sustainability, manufacturability, ethics, health, safety issues, and social and political issues) in such a way as to meet the desired result; ability to apply modern design methods for this purpose. 4. Ability to devise, select, and use modern techniques and tools needed for mechanical engineering practice; ability to employ information technologies effectively. 5. Ability to design and conduct experiments, to gather data, analyze and interpret results for mechanical engineering problems. 6. Ability to work efficiently in intra-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary teams; ability to work individually. 7. Ability to communicate effectively in Turkish, both orally and in writing; knowledge of English at least at CEFR B2 level. 8. Recognition of the need for lifelong learning; ability to access information, to follow developments in science and technology, and to continue to educate him/herself. 9. Awareness of professional and ethical responsibility. 10. Understanding of business life practices such as project management, risk management, and change management; awareness of entrepreneurship, innovation, and sustainable development. 11. Understanding of contemporary issues and the global and societal effects of mechanical engineering practices on health, environment, and safety; awareness of the legal consequences of engineering solutions. 12. Breadth in mechanical engineering practice, analysis and design with 18 required course in mechanical engineering, and depth in one or more fields with 4 mechanical engineering electives. 13. Knowledge of chemistry and calculus-based physics with depth in at least one of these; ability to apply advanced mathematics through multivariate calculus and differential equations; familiarity with statistics and linear algebra. 14. Motion in one dimension: Position, velocity and acceleration vectors 3. Motion in two dimensions: Projectile motion and uniform circular motion 4. ewton s first, second and third laws 5. Application of ewton laws: Friction and uniform circular motion 6. Problem Session for Midterm I Exam and Midterm I exam. 7. Work and Kinetic Energy: Work, work-energy theorem and power. 8. Potential energy and conservation of energy: Conservative and non-conservative forces.

Rotational kinematics: Angular position, angular velocity, angular acceleration, moment of inertia. 13. Rotational dynamics: Torque, Angular momentum, Rotation of rigid a body, work concept for rotation, conservation of angular momentum, gyroscopes. 14. Static Equilibrium of Rigid Bodies: Conditions for static equilibrium. /Recommended Readings Teaching Methods Homework and Projects Laboratory Work Computer Use Other Activities Assessment Methods Course Administration Textbook is : Sears & Zemansky's University Physics Mastering Physics with etext -- Access Card Package Students should watch the lecture videos posted in the blackboard system before they come to the classroom. The lecture contents are also posted in the blackboard system. The lectures are conventional lectures with instructor dominated. However, contributions of students are welcome. The interaction with the students (questions and answers) will be maximized as much as possible. There are non mandatory homework with their only numerical answers provided. It is a separate class now (103L). /A Random quizzes will take place. We will have at least 3 quizzes. The assessment of this course will include: 10% attendance 10% laboratory performance (Phy 103L, where available) 10% quizzes 40% final 30% midterms (Two midterms) Students are expected to attend 70% of the classes. There is no make-up for missed classes. The attendance performance is going to be reflected by 10% to the final grades. One make-up exam will be given at the end of the semester for those who miss an exam due to a legitimate excuse accepted by the instructor. The students are expected to pursue in this class with honesty and integrity. Disciplinary action will be pursued in all instances if academic dishonesty and cheating has occurred.
