The best way to reach me is by and I will usually respond to s within 24 hours (excepting weekends). Course Understanding: Students will understand that combinations of listening, speaking, reading, writing, non-verbal expressions are foundations for communicating in the Arabic language. Students will study the language and culture of Arabic-speaking countries. This course will be linked with the standards outlined by (ACTFL) the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. Students will be assessed throughout the year in each of these areas, as they relate to a specific theme and/or topic. The assessment is based on the three modes of Communication (Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational) Course Description: IBDP Arabic SL: This class is for students who have successfully completed Arabic 3 and would like to continue their study at an advanced level. As students prepare for the IB Arabic SL exam, they will increase their ability to work independently. They will also increase their fluency and communication skills through oral and written practice, and will increase their ability to analyze authentic literature and translate that analysis into sustained composition. Students will be wellprepared to continue their study of Arabic at the university level. Required Material: A notebook ( for Arabic class only) A folder or Binder (for Arabic class only) Pens/pencils Color pencils High light ( 2or3 different colors)

2 Student Expectations: Behavior: Take care of personal business before class begins. Be in seat ready for work when class begins. Bring all materials with you every day. Be respectful of yourself, other students, the teacher, and guest teachers. When working with partners and/or groups, you have the obligation to be prepared and to participate. Be kind and helpful with anyone you work with and make your best effort. Participation: To be successful at learning a new language, it is important to be willing to participate in class activities. Take an active role in class and continue to practice outside of class, it is a good idea to review and practice frequently Attendance and Tardy: Attendance is very important to success in an Arabic language class. Attending class and participating in class activities will allow you to improve your Arabic language skills. It is your responsibility to attend class and take advantage of these opportunities. Tardy policy: Students who have unexcused tardies will receive a referral and detention after three tardiness. Every tardy after 3 will result in an automatic tardy referral. For students who do not have tardies and unexcused absences per quarter I will drop the lowest quiz score for that quarter. Homework Procedures: Students are expected to review at home what we have studied in class. Students will be assigned a new vocabulary list each week. There will be a vocabulary quiz for each list. Other projects and assignments will be given as homework as they come up. Late Work Policy: Students are expected to turn in all assignments and projects on their due date. It is each student s responsibility to make up any missing work. Late work will not be accepted after each quarter ends. Electronic devices: These are not allowed in the classroom and will be confiscated if seen. You are not allowed to listen to music aloud or on headphones, call or text during class, even if it is a family member. Emergency exceptions need to be communicated to the teacher immediately. Please ask family members to contact you appropriately through the school, even in an emergency. If your device is confiscated, it will be given to a security monitor for safe-keeping. You may retrieve your device at the end of the day from a dean on the front steps of the school. Hall Passes and Bathroom Policy: You have 4 hall/bathroom passes a quarter that can be used upon the teacher s discretion. You may not use the bathroom during direct instructional time.

January /February Topic: Communication and media 1- Radio and television 2- Telephone Enduring Understanding: Important Questions: How important is oil to the Arab world? How cultural norms are reflected what people Watch? Are Arab countries concerned about the environment? November/ December Topic: Customs and traditions 1- Celebrations, social and religious events 2- Food, dress codes, uniforms Important Questions: What is the importance of the nuclear family in Arab cultures? What we eat say about who we are? What do every day practices (what we do, eat, and wear) reflect about different cultures? March /April Topic: Leisure 1- Hobbies, Sports 2- Traveling Enduring Understanding: Cultural practices and products impact cultural perspectives. Important Questions: How do perspectives on sports, fitness and health practices differ across cultures? How are sports heroes viewed differently in the U.S. and in Arab countries? What does your future hold?

4 May/June Topic: Social relationships 1- Relationships (friendship, work, family) 2-Educational system Important Questions: What defines ethnic identity? How does the community affect Arab societies? How are teachers perceived in Arab countries and in the U.S.? Students will expect to copy down important information into their assignment notebook..(تسؤال اليوم ( question Class always begins every day with a written warm up Any late or missing work MUST be handed directly to me or in the homework box. If there is a substitute, I recommend that you wait to turn it in when I return. DO NOT leave your work on my desk and assume I will find it. Always put FIRST and LAST names (English and Arabic) on your paper. I will take points if those are missing. Extra credit can be earned in many ways. You will receive a small paper that you can attach to any assignment, test, or quiz that you want extra credit added to. Keep the room neat and clean.
