1 Mathematical Analysis Ms. Sara Tagget School Year The HCPSS Family Mathematics Support Center: Office Hours are in Room 219 by appointment After School 2:10-2:45 p.m. and Before School 7-7:20 a.m. Course Description This course serves as a foundation for students who will be taking calculus. It focuses on graphical analysis through the study of sequence and series; polynomials, rational, radical, exponential, logarithmic, and logistic functions; continuity and limits; vectors; and absolute value, greatest integer, and piecewise functions. This course emphasizes the use of the graphing calculator. Graphing calculators are required for this course. Required Materials You are expected to bring to class the following materials on a daily basis: 3-ring binder with lots of blank paper and 2 dividers OR a spiral and a separate folder. Pencils and erasers (YOU WILL ONLY USE PENCIL ON ALL ASSESSMENTS) Graph Paper Graphing Calculator. Note: You need your own graphing calculator either a TI-83, TI-84 or TI-84+ for this class and all of your future math classes at MHHS. Label your calculator with your name. I will NOT have extra calculators in class for you to use and I do not lend my own calculator. If on occasion you forget your calculator, you may be able to share a calculator with another student (their calculator). However, there is absolutely NO Sharing of calculators on a quiz or a test. If there is an issue with acquiring a calculator, please contact Ms. Tagget individually. You will be provided a textbook, A Graphical Approach to Precalculus with Limits by Hornsby, Lial, and Rockswold (5 th edition) which you will keep at home. The textbook is to be returned to school at the end of the school year. If you loose or damage the textbook, the replacement cost is $100. Learning Objectives & Outcomes At the conclusion of this course it is expected that students will: 1. Interpret expressions for functions in terms of the situation they model. 2. Investigate and compare various algebraic functions and use them to solve problems. 3. Recognize real-world applications of mathematics at a rigorous level. 4. Problem solve and critical think using mathematics. 1

2 Classroom Expectations In order to be successful in this class it is expected that the student will: Attend class daily and on time. It is the student s responsibility to get any make-up work. Actively participate and take notes in class. Complete all assignments in class and at home to the best of their ability. Seek help from the teacher or outside resources if struggling. Avoid all distractions in class including cell phone use, eating food, etc. Will be respectful and courteous to all. Respect teacher s right to teach and your classmate s right to learn. Lateness & Behavior Consequences Mt. Hebron High School follows the Howard County Public Schools expected student behaviors which are in your student handbook. I intend to be firm, consistent and fair at all times when issuing consequences for behavior problems. Your behavior should show respect at all times. Any altercations during class that disrespects a student or faculty member, or disrupts the progress of the class will lead to the consequences in your student handbook. Cell Phone Usage Policy Cell phones must be Put Away AND Turned OFF or ON SILENT (not vibrate) for the entire class. For those occasions when cell phones are used for a specific in-class activity, students will be allowed to turn their cell phone on and use the phone during class for the specific activity ONLY. Failure to comply with this policy will result in the following: First Offense Student will receive verbal warning from the teacher. Second Offense Cell phone will be taken from the student for the class period and returned to them at the end of the class period. Third or More Offenses Cell phone will be taken from the student for the class period and to retrieve their phone, they will see an Administrator at the end of the school day. A referral will be written which may have additional consequences. Parent or Guardian will be notified. Grading Policy 1. Students grades will consist of homework, quizzes, tests, and graded classwork. Grades are point-based meaning the grade will be calculated by adding up all points earned and dividing by the total possible points. 2. A: , B: 80-89, C: 70-79, D: 60-69, E: <59 2

3 3. All grades will be posted on the online grading system (Aspen). All homework assignments as well as upcoming quizzes and tests will be posted on my Facebook page: MsSara Tagget. My web site is sites.google.com/site/stagget and will contain links to useful information for this course such as this syllabus and helpful web sites. 4. Homework is assigned and checked every time the class meets and will not be accepted if turned in after the beginning of class or if the student is late to class (unexcused) since homework is checked at the beginning of class. All WORK must be done in pencil or with erasable pen. The original problem and the steps to the solution must be written out. Writing only the answers will receive no credit. You need to attempt all assigned work even if you can t complete the problem. Homework is graded on attempt, but occasionally selected homework will be collected and possibly graded for accuracy. 5. If a student is absent it is their responsibility to make-up the work. It is up to the teacher s discretion as to how long they have to make this up depending on the length of absence and the nature of the assignment. If a student is attending a field trip or school sponsored activity where they will miss class, they must get the work before the trip so that it will not be late. NOTE: When you return from an absence, you will have to make up the work you missed while at the same time learn new material. This is hard to do for most students, so try not to be absent! Being absent the day before an assessment is not an excuse for not taking the assessment with the rest of the class. 4 Academic Integrity Every student is responsible for his/her own learning. A student may not share their work with another student unless given discretion to do so by the teacher. Failure to commit to this expectation will result in disciplinary action in accordance with Mount Hebron High School s policies. This policy applies to all parties involved! The bottom line is NO CHEATING EVER! Homework is to be done at home by you, unless time is allowed for it in class. You may work with another classmate, tutor, study group, etc. but you may not copy homework, not even this little problem from anyone ever and especially not just before class. Copying even ONE problem is cheating. So, don t do it. Do your own work all the time. Please see the agenda book for the honor code and consequences for Howard County Public Schools. Getting Help My office hours are typically every day after school until 2:45 pm. During my office hours, you can receive help and makeup a quiz or test. You can and I encourage you to do your homework for that night you will have the opportunity to get help and check your answers. Keep in mind that I teach multiple subject areas so I may need to juggle helping students from multiple subjects please be patient when this happens. To receive help after school, simply make an appointment with me at least 1 day in advance. Then, on the day of your appointment, verify during class that I am still available to help you (emergencies sometimes come up). When you come for help, you should bring your binder with up-to-date class work and homework. After school help is offered to any student who has been doing their work to learn Math Analysis Honors both in and out of class. Help outside of the classroom is designed to augment our classroom learning. There are other options available to you to get help: The appropriate section of your textbook (start with the index or table of contents). Another student or teacher at Mount Hebron including Math National Honor Society Student please see your teacher for names and availability. Private Tutor. These tutors charge a fee and I can provide a list of potential math tutors. The HCPSS Family Mathematics Support Center on the web. Or even just google your question. Just be careful to use only reliable and reputable web sites, if you are unsure, ask me. YouTube has LOTS of appropriate videos. My highest priority is for you to be successful. If you are having trouble or have concerns, please come see me and we can work out possible solutions. The sooner the better! 4

5 Answers to Your Frequently Asked Questions? 1. I was absent, what work did I miss? Check the Homework folder on the bulletin board for work with your name on it. If it s not there ask Ms. Tagget. Copy the notes from a classmate. Get the assignment details from a classmate or my web site. 2. Can I borrow a pencil? You may borrow a pencil from the box on the supply table for today. Please return it at the end of class. If I run out of pencils because they are not being returned too bad. 3. Can I borrow paper? Get it from the supply table or ask a classmate. 4. Can I borrow a calculator? No, because I have none to lend. 5. What are we doing today? Check the Objectives posted. 6. What is the homework assigned today? Check the Homework posted and write it on your notebook or agenda book. The homework can also be found on my web site, but emergencies do come up, so write the assignment down before you leave class. 7. When is the next quiz or test? Check the next quiz/test date posted. 8. Can I go to the bathroom? Get a drink? Do this stuff before class. During class raise hand two fingers up. You get the nod, take your agenda book, write the information (where going, date, time), and then get my signature and go. Please return in a timely manner, I don t want to have to go searching for you. 9. I need to leave class early. I have a pass to go to guidance Give me a note or pass, I will talk to you about this after warmup or while I m checking homework. 10. When are you here after school for extra help? Make an appointment for after school with me. You must be current on your homework and classwork to receive extra help. Verify with me the morning of the day you are planning on coming to make sure I am available. 5
