2 Mathematics Medium Term Overview: Year 2 Four main areas: Reasoning and Mastery of Number Reasoning and Mastery of Addition and Subtraction Reasoning and Mastery of Multiplication and Division Reasoning and Mastery of Geometry Fractions, Statistics and Measurement are all integrated within these four main blocks These are highlighted in Red and are essential that they are taught in that week to ensure coverage. These elements will be monitored to ensure they happen in these weeks. 7 Mental calculation strategies To focus on multiplication facts for 2, 5 and 10 and explore commutatively Doubling and halving, using known facts from tables, multiplying and dividing by ten: digits 10 times bigger or smaller Look at commutativity : same answer, calculation, so that children begin to understand that is they know 7 x 5 = 35 they also know that 5 x 7 = 35. Do this for all tables facts. Arrays for multiplication: grouping model To focus on repeated addition practically making arrays Focus on single digit x single digit arrays. Use ones cubes and pennies, exchanging ten ones for a ten. Record horizontally Commutativity Problem solving related to multipllication Year 2 Medium Term Overview Arrays for division: Grouping model To focus on repeated subtraction practically making arrays Explore the arrays with answers to multiplication tables they need to know, e.g. array of 18 counters set out in rows of 2, 18 2 = 9 and then the other way round, 18 9 = 2 Linking division and fractions: sharing model To focus on sharing between 2, 5 and 10 practically using concrete objects What is and what is the same about this and grouping? When doing this link to, for example 20, ½ = 10, 1/5 = 4, 2/5 = 8 etc. and 1/10 = 2, 2/10 = 4 etc. Problem solving related to division Repeated subtraction. Link to doubling and fractions. To solve simple problems relating to subtraction Work within the context of measure half as much, 4 times as much, a quarter of the size etc. 2D shape To compare, classify and draw shapes according to properties, To use drawings on paper and begin with three sided shapes, all are triangles and repeat for other shapes Look at equilateral triangle as regular.
