2 2 3 BEFORE Welcome THE SHOW Thank you for being a part of nation s largest skills and careers event, The Skills Show. WorldSkills UK champions world-class apprenticeships and technical skills. We do this by engaging young people in skills competitions, delivering experiential careers events, role modelling to challenge stereotypes and using our research to support the apprenticeship agenda. Our goals are to support business competitiveness, young people s employability and excellence in standards. It s great to have you on board and working with us to inspire young people to discover their future. This guide will give you all the information you need and let you know how to maximise your involvement in the show. 3 4 5 BEFORE THE SHOW Registering your delegates It is essential to register your team for the show. This is so we can ensure that you are given on site access to all the areas you need. We will notify you when registration launches in the autumn. Promoting your involvement in The Skills Show Marketing Here are a few suggestions of how you can promote your involvement and spread the word about The Skills Show: In order for us to promote your involvement with the show, please upload your logo (.eps and.jpg /.png) and your 100-word organisation profile for inclusion on our website, by following the upload link detailed on your contract. The deadline for upload is 1 October 2016 but please upload the information as soon as you can so that we can promote your organisation as soon as possible. sponsor@worldskillsuk.org and request posters, leaflets and/or flyers to put up around your organisation and give to your networks and contacts. You can also find electronic versions of these here. Promote the show on your website or in your e-newsletter and include our banner in your signature. These resources can be found here. As a partner of The Skills Show, you have the right to use our logo on your materials. If you do not have the logo already, please download it here. Promoting your involvement in The Skills Show PR Here are a few suggestions of how you can promote your activity in The Skills Show: Download the press release templates to send to local and relevant trade press contacts here. Invite your partners, stakeholders and journalists to come along to The Skills Show or ask your VIPs if they would like to take part in our tour programme. If you are inviting journalists to The Skills Show, they will need to be accredited to be on site. Promoting your involvement in The Skills Show Social Media Here are a few suggestions of how you can encourage people to get involved in The Skills Show using social media: Follow our social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and Flickr) and share our posts, images and videos. When talking about your involvement in The Skills Show on Twitter, please use the hashtag #SkillsShow16. Dedicated tweets and Facebook posts are available for you to use on your social media channels. You can find these here.

4 6 7 Supporting our volunteer programme The Skills Show is a huge and varied event and offers a fantastic chance for volunteers to gain training and work experience. We offer opportunities in a number of areas, including event management, Health and Safety, marketing and communications and customer service, as well as the chance to learn what it s like working at a national event. This year we hope to promote our volunteer opportunities to as many people as possible and ask if you would be able to help us. You can find more information on the volunteer section of the website. Why not offer our volunteer openings to your own employees? It is a great opportunity for your employees to: Learn new skills in areas like customer service and event management. Boost your CSR programme. Engage your employees in your support of The Skills Show s mission. Bring new ideas on skills development back to your business. 5 8 9 The Skills Show Experience The Skills Show Experience is delivered through a range of collaborative partnerships across the nation. The programme is designed to inspire and inform young people, as well as responding to local labour market needs, by giving them access to a range of events, tools, skills competitions and hands-on skills experiences. Through these activities organised in collaboration with local partners and employers, WorldSkills UK aims to inspire and inform young people about the world of work, wherever they live. We would welcome the opportunity to develop bespoke programmes with/for partners to ensure that young people have access to a range of tools, knowledge and hands-on careers experiences wherever they live.

6 10 11 AT SHOW THE What to expect The Skills Show attracts 75,000 visitors annually. The show provides hands-on experiences that inspire young people to explore careers and motivates them to find out more about the world of work. New for 2016 Showcases: This year, almost every WorldSkills UK competition will have a Showcase directly alongside it. Embedded within the competition space, Showcases help make the content of the competitions accessible, relevant and engaging to visitors. Bigger Staff Room: Expanding on last year s success, The Staff Room area is for teachers and parents to learn and discuss how best to deliver careers advice to young people. Visitors benefit from seminars, take-away resources and networking with other professionals and organisations. Experiential careers advice The Skills Show has built a reputation for successful experiential careers events that are proven to inspire, educate and influence. This model of experiential careers advice is fundamental in engaging young people who visit the show. Please consider this when planning your exhibition space and deciding what interactive experiences are most likely to appeal to visitors. 7 12 13 This year s show will be separated into five skill areas: Construction and Infrastructure Highlighting skills in construction, plus the competitions. Bricklaying, carpentry, plastering, gardening, plumbing, roofing and much more. Media and Creative Giving visitors the opportunity to explore creative careers, plus the competitions. Games, design, fashion, film, music, window design and much more. The Skills Show key audiences The Skills Show attracts a variety of audiences, a rough guide to the types of audiences throughout the show is presented below: Secondary Schools and Colleges Thursday 17 November 2016, 9am to 4pm and Friday 18 November 2016, 9am to 4pm Families and year old visitors Saturday 19 November 2016,10am to 4pm IT and Enterprise Examining jobs in It and enterprise, plus the competitions. Banking, enterprise, insurance, IT, software, web and much more. Hospitality and Lifestyle Presenting work done in shops, beauty and cooking, plus the competitions. Beauty therapy, cooking, floristry, hairdressing, retail and much more. Engineering and Technology with BAE Systems Offering opportunities in engineering and manufacturing, plus the competitions. Cars, engineering, mechanics, robotics, welding and much more.

8 14 15 Interactive experiences Our visitors have a chance to engage in over 70 interactive and innovative stands throughout the show. Developed and delivered by leaders in industry and education, these Have a Go experiences offer visitors the chance to try new skills first hand. The experiences on offer are diverse and include plumbing, photography, nail art, programming, 3D design, TV and radio production, aeronautical engineering and criminology. Competitions The Skills Show hosts the National Finals of the WorldSkills UK Competitions, offering visitors the chance to see the best of the best compete at the highest level in their chosen skills. These inspiring competitions see the 600 finalists win their places in Squad UK following 500 competitive heats across over 50 different skills competitions, taking place across the UK. Spotlight Reinforcing The Skills Show s commitment to provide accessible expert advice for visitors, over 100 Spotlight talks give young people the chance to hear from real people doing real jobs as varied as aeronautical engineering, catering and beauty therapy, while famous names from around the world of business and entertainment offer inspiration and insight into their own success. Showcase A stage for the UK s finest students and learners showcase their talents and skills. Visitors can discover what skills are needed to be part of WorldSkills UK Competitions. Skill areas at the show will have stages showcasing the best skills in that sector. The Staff Room The Staff Room is a one stop shop at the heart of the show that provides expert guidance on careers advice, resources and support to teachers and careers professionals working with young people, and advice for parents. Careers advice The Skills Show is unique because it combines real hands-on experience with expert careers advice, all under one roof. Visitors can be inspired, get involved with a skill, and immediately discover how to turn that interest into a vocation. A Careers Advice Hub featured in every zone within the show provides specialist careers information and advice relevant to that area of work.

9 16 17 Your Next Step A designated part of each skill area will include a Hub for employers to advertise any jobs, work experience, placements or apprenticeships that visitors can apply for; as well as for visitors to explore online careers services and vacancies portals. This will be integrated with careers advisers next to it. Special Guest Lounge The show will include a dedicated space where our partners can work, relax, meet contacts and network. You are now part of a network of 200 partners, so make sure you make full use of the business development and networking facilities. (Access is dependent on your partnership package - please refer to your contract.) Media Centre The Skills Show Media Centre is available for your communications team to use throughout the live days of the show. Anyone wishing to use this service will need to be registered as an accredited member of the media please see registration information in your Exhibitor Manual. Business Development and Networking Opportunities Hundreds of businesses and global brands come together to make The Skills Show happen. This unique collaborative platform offers great networking opportunities, so ensure you make the most of: Welcome event An event on Thursday 17 November. Special Guest Lounge A dedicated space for partners to network and relax. VIP tours A tour programme is available for your VIPs and special guests.
