1 Analyzing How You Spend Your Time Use your completed Time Management Schedule to calculate how much time you spend on each activity listed in the Activities Breakdown below. The blank lines are for any additional situations that take up your time. After you have totaled up all the items you can think of, figure out how much free time you have. Activities: ACTIVITIES BREAKDOWN Hours per week 1. Class time 2. Study time, reviewing, projects, papers. 3. Commuting. 4. Dressing and eating 5. Hours of employment 6. Responsibilities at home.. 7. Telephone Television 9. Dating, outings, sports, movies, clubs, etc Sleeping Total Total number of hours per week = 168. Subtract your total from 168. The number you have left over is your free time. (If your free time is a negative number, you are doing too much.) Personal Response Check: As a result of analyzing my Time Management Schedule. I realize that:
2 Do you procrastinate? To find out, circle the number that best applies for each statement. 1. I invent reasons and look for excuses for not acting on a problem. 2. It takes pressure to get me to work on difficult assignments. 3. I take half measures that will avoid or delay unpleasant or difficult tasks. 4. I face too many interruptions and crises that interfere with accomplishing my major goals. 5. I sometimes neglect to carry out important tasks. 6. I schedule big assignments too late to get them done as well as I know I could. 7. I m sometimes too tired to do the work I need to do. 8. I start new tasks before I finish old ones. 9. When I work in groups, I try to get other people to finish what I don t. 10. I put off tasks that I really don t want to do but know that I must do. Add up your total points: Scoring: Total the numbers you have circled. If the score is below 20, you are not a chronic procrastinator and you probably have only an occasional problem. If you score is 21-30, you have a minor problem with procrastination. If your score is above 30, you procrastinate quite often and should work on breaking the habit. If you do procrastinate often, why do you think you do it? Are there particular subjects or classes or kinds of assignments on which you are more likely to procrastinate? Working in a GROUP: Think about the last time you procrastinated. Describe it as completely as you can. What was the task? What did you do rather than doing what needed to be done? What could you have done to avoid procrastinating in this situation? Ask others what strategy they might suggest for avoiding procrastination. POWER Learning, Robert Feldman (2000)
3 Journal Reflections: Where Does My Time Go? 1. On the typical weekday morning, what time do you wake up? When would you prefer to wake up if you had the choice? 2. On the typical weekday evening, when do you go to bed? Why? 3. Would you characterize yourself as a morning person, who accomplishes the most in the early morning, or do you see yourself more as a night person, who is most comfortable doing work in the evenings? What implications does this have for your scheduling of classes and when you do the most work?
4 4. Do you generally get to classes early, late, or on time? Why? How does this pattern affect your experience and performance in class? 5. If a day suddenly contained more than 24 hours, how would it change your life? What would you do with the extra time? Do you think you would accomplish more? 6. Generally speaking, how would you characterize your time management skills? What would be the benefit to your personally if you could manage time more effectively? POWER Learning, Robert Feldman (2000)
