QAA General Business and Management Benchmark Statement 07QAA Dates of PSP preparation/revision: December 15 EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME The International Sports Management degree programme responds proactively to an external environment, which in 08 saw the revision of subject benchmarks for the Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism (HLST) areas. The programme is oriented towards meeting the needs of the large and growing sports management sector, ensuring that students with aspirations to pursue a career in the industry are fully prepared to manage issues relating to globalisation, sports business and sports development. Students will study the local, regional, national and international issues pertinent to the provision of sport across a range of organisational sporting contexts from the public, commercial and third sectors. Employability is also a key aim of the programme and the Industrial Contact Scheme will provide students with clear opportunities to experience live practice. To support this a wide-range of teaching and learning experiences are provided on the programme including live case studies, group projects and presentations, business/event simulations, scenario planning, table top exercises, field visits and visiting industry speakers. With the increasing mobility and globalisation of sport, there is a growing need for students to understand the economic, social and business forces that are driving how sport is consumed within commercial and public settings. This programme aims to provide a sound, yet challenging academic education, coupled with vocational relevance that prepares students for graduate entry to an increasingly competitive international sporting marketplace, or indeed, encourages further study.
2 GCU has a long history of providing sports education at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate level and has well established industry links in Glasgow and further afield. As a city, Glasgow is recognised for its development and management of international sporting opportunities, which ties in closely with the work of Sports Scotland, who have helped establish Scotland as one of the top sports destinations in the world. As such, the demand for sports management education is likely to continue to grow and be attractive to applicants. With Scotland hosting the Commonwealth Games and Ryder Cup in 14, alongside an on-going programme of international sporting events, this is the ideal time to launch this new degree programme which builds upon existing knowledge and expertise in the subject area. The proposed programme design reflects the QAA Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism, 08 and QAA General Business and Management Benchmark Statement 07 which will be reviewed throughout the period 13-15; This proposal builds on elements of existing good practice within the Sport, Events and Tourism (SET) subject group, whilst engaging fully with innovation of approach in terms of Departmental, School and wider University provision and requirements. It embraces the future of Scottish, UK and International Sport and provides an opportunity in terms of innovative portfolio development for GCU to continue to recognise the importance of Sport provision at HE level. The broad educational aims of the BA (Hons) International Sports Management programme are follows: To provide the students with the knowledge and skills to equip them for a career in Sports Management, or in related areas. To stimulate and develop an enquiring, analytical and creative approach of the student to issues in Sports Management within a contemporary, challenging and relevant approach to curriculum development. To develop and stimulate critical, analytical problem-based learning skills and the transferable skills to prepare the student for graduate employment in a wide range of sports industry employment situations To assist the student to develop the vocational skills required for the sports industry To develop understanding of the impact of national and international environmental contexts on the performance and management of sporting organizations, and, of the impact of business on society at a local and global level in line with the Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME).
3 To develop understanding of the practice of ethical management across a variety of sporting organisational and national contexts from both a business and social science perspective. To develop understanding of role of creativity, innovation and enterprise in sports business and society at both national and international levels. To develop the skills required to evaluate, plan and implement research relevant to a sport management context. To develop communication, team working, presentation and information gathering skills that enhance graduate employability. To provide students with the opportunity to broaden their international perspectives and inter cultural knowledge through the study of a foreign language and studying in a partner intuition abroad. To provide students with the opportunity to seek membership of an appropriate sport professional body as a student member or after graduation. At level one, the programme aims to provide a general foundation in the key functions associated with business management, an understanding of how the external environment impacts on how business performance and the impact of sports business on society both at a national and international level. Managing business challenges in a responsible manner is a key theme embedded in the programme across all four levels with the aim of engendering responsible leaders and global citizenship in keeping with the Principles of Responsible Management (PRME). The design of this foundation year reflects a belief in the value of developing inter-disciplinary, reflective practitioners who can understand the broad context and principles of managing organisations. As student s progress through the levels of the programme, they deepen their knowledge of sport and understanding of specific sport management contexts. At level one, students will also embark on a three year development programme that focuses on fostering employability, enterprise and entrepreneurship. By participating in this programme students will learn about the world of working in sport and, through involvement in various team projects, will learn about managing self and others. During their time in the university community the 21st century graduate is required to develop a range graduate attributes that will prepare them for a number of sporting work contexts and cultures. This degree will further enhance student understanding of the world of work through participation in a wide range of teaching and learning experiences including integrative case studies, company sponsored group projects, company visits and industry speakers.finally, students are offered options in more specialised topics supporting a liberal arts approach to their education. The 21st century graduate must be prepared for challenge and seek opportunity. This theme is embedded implicitly and explicitly within the programme when students have the opportunity to study overseas for the full year or part year. Overseas study is supported through the Erasmus programme at GCU which allows students to apply to study at a partner institution. GCU has a wide range of partnership institutions across Europe, North America, as well as new opportunities in Latin America and Asia. Students who study in Glasgow will enjoy different challenges and opportunities designed to stretch their abilities. Ideas involving enterprise, strategy and ethics aim to use
4 pedagogy that creates academically, culturally and socially challenging environments enabling expansive learning. Students will be able to further develop and demonstrate their practical sport management and entrepreneurship skills through participation in the EEE3 module: the Value Challenge. On completion of Levels One and Two it is felt that students will have gained a solid understanding of how to create and manage sport interventions and thus the focus of delivery will change slightly to look at the more strategic aspect of sport management and its development. Students knowledge of the international sporting environments will be expanded as they begin to look at the strategic and political aspects of sport. The practical element of the EEE module will however, allow students to continue to develop their practical sport management skills. Level four offers students the opportunity to develop their individual interests and identity within international sports management. Students are encouraged to nurture their own individual interests via the dissertation, which they are encouraged to use as a method of preparing themselves for work readiness by developing a depth of knowledge and evidence of critical, analytical and creative thinking within a specific area of sports academia. At this level students will examine the critique the global significance of sports building upon the socio-cultural foundations which have been developed in previous modules. Throughout their degree students will be actively encouraged to gain practical experience of working in the sports industry. It is suggested that work experience would be embedded via the personal development planning process with students being required to gain a certain number of hours of work experience in the first three years of their degree. This will ensure that graduates have the knowledge, skills and expertise to allow them to operate successfully in their chosen industry.
