1 JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: REPORTING TO: RESPONSIBLE FOR: LOCATION: HOURS: LEAVE: CONTRACT: SALARY: PENSION: TRAVEL: Date: NCS Assistant Team Leader NCS Project Manager Assisting the Team Leader in supervising young people aged years old in groups of Buckinghamshire, Milton Keynes and Gloucestershire 37 hours per week, worked flexibly to include evening and overnight work 25 days holiday per annum plus bank/public holidays (pro rata) Fixed Term three weeks 16,640 pro rata ( 1,056 for a three-week programme which includes holiday pay) Up to 3% matched contributions Travel around Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes will be necessary. Summer 2017; wave dates excluding weekends; Wave 1 Monday 25 th June Friday 13 th July Wave 2 Monday 9 th July Friday 27 th July Wave 3 Monday 16 th July Friday 3 rd August Wave 4 Monday 30th July Friday 17 th August You must also be available for: Staff Training Day Saturday 9 th June Teambuilding Day Saturday 16 th June STAFFING SUMMARY NCS Assistant Team Leaders will be split between two cohorts. They will help the NCS Team Leaders support their cohort of 12 to 16 young people on the Action4Youth National Citizen Service programme over a period of three consecutive weeks. The Assistant may also need to provide one to one support for young people with special educational needs. The cohorts will include a mixture of young people from different backgrounds, some of whom may have disabilities or behavioural difficulties. You will supervise the same groups throughout and will be required to stay overnight during the residential elements of the programme. You are also required to attend the staff training event and teambuilding day. During the programme you are responsible to the NCS Wave Leader and NCS Project Manager.
2 Programme structure and your role: Week 1 Residential (4 nights, 5 days) at an outdoor activity centre aimed at team building: Follow a structured activity timetable Supervise young people and manage behaviour during all activities. Enthuse about and get involved in all activities. Be proactive and lead by example at all times Ensure your group is on time and following the behavioural code of conduct Assist at mealtimes and bedtimes; including one night duty Help facilitate quality Guided Reflection sessions on a daily basis Provide 1:1 support to young people with additional needs Week 2 Residential (4 nights, 5 days) at Caldecotte Xperience, focuses on being a Responsible Citizen: As above for week 1, plus; Follow structured timetable and assist your group during activities and travel. Help cook meals when your group is participating in Come Dine with NCS Supervise your group off site during their charity visit Assist your group with their Social Action Project planning and their Dragons Den presentation allow young people to take the lead but be involved at all times and direct ideas and planning so it is feasible and achievable. Your input will be key to keeping them on target. Ensure all of your group are clear regarding the plans for week three (Social Action Project) Ensure risk assessments are in place for social action project activities the following week Week 3 Non-residential implementing social action project Meet with your group every day at the location provided. Support your group with the delivery of their project. Communicate clearly with charity partners regarding projects and ensure that they are kept up to date at all times Provide adult supervision and be present at events and activities. Ensure Health and Safety procedures have been followed and any incidents reported. Ensure quality Guided Reflection sessions happen on a daily basis KEY TASKS To supervise young people in all activities, both at residential and non-residential locations. To include: Away and home travel Taking registers of participants on both outbound and inward journeys. Ensure participants are fully versed regarding travel arrangements for both outbound and inbound journeys. To actively take part in daily activities both indoor and outdoor, and assist your team leader in supervising your group. To provide support and direction to all group members. To guide and assist your group through a Personal and Social Development programme. To monitor students welfare throughout the course and to be especially aware of recorded allergies, physical and mental health conditions, and to follow the procedures in place. To liaise and communicate with NCS Wave Leader, Action4Youth staff and your Team Leader on a regular basis.
3 To have knowledge of and comply with the Data Protection Act. To be aware of and comply with Health and Safety procedures. To have regard for the vision of Action4Youth and to display a commitment to equal opportunities and to the protection and safeguarding of children, young people and vulnerable adults. Report any behaviour, conversations or comments which are inappropriate within a setting for children and young people. Undertaking responsibility, as part of the team, for all Health and Safety work related matters. Working within the guidelines of Action4Youth policies and procedures. TERMS AND CONDITIONS Place of work: Transport Pre-Employment Checks Meals and Accommodation Proof of Eligibility to work in the UK Training Buckinghamshire, Milton Keynes and Gloucestershire Transport to and from residential sites will be provided via coach from a pick up location in Aylesbury. You will be expected to make your own travel arrangements for week three. Appointment will be subject to a satisfactory Enhanced DBS check, satisfactory references and the completion of a non-disclosure form Whilst on residentials you are entitled to free meals plus on-site accommodation. Evidence must be provided that you have the right to work in the UK (Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006) Attendance at the NCS Staff Training day on Saturday 9 th June is compulsory and you must complete the NCS Trust E- learning module by Tuesday 1 st May. 4 Person Specification NCS Assistant Team Leader Description Essential Desirable Experience/ Knowledge Educated to A-level standard or equivalent. A professionally recognised qualification relating to children and young people (JNC recognised preferable) Training completed in the following areas: Health and Safety; Safeguarding; Equal opportunities; First Aid; Food Safety Technical Job Related Skills Personal Job Related Skills Knowledge and understanding of Health and Safety and Safeguarding. Knowledge and understanding of the issues relevant to and affecting young people and their participation in the programme, including equality and diversity. Working to personal targets. Ability to relate well to young people from a wide range of backgrounds. Ability to form relationships and manage boundaries with young people. Ability to manage challenging behaviour. Ability to plan, deliver and evaluate projects. A positive, enthusiastic and can do approach to work. Committed to your own learning and development Communicate well at all levels. Knowledge of the National Citizen Service Programme and its six principles. Knowledge of local community partnerships Experience of working in residential settings. Experience of supporting children/young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Experience of enabling the active involvement of young people in decision making processes. Creativity Understanding of group work. Experience of working with young people in informal environments. Experience in the delivery of group work activities with young people. Car user with access to a car with Business Insurance.
