R Welcome to Times Tales is the brain child of Jennie von Eggers. While teaching her two boys the times tables, she noticed they were consistently struggling with certain problems. Answers for the lower facts came easily, but the upper times tables just wouldn t stick! One day her children knew them, the net day they would forget. To overcome this problem, Jennie incorporated a commonly used memory tool called mnemonics and transformed the higher facts into a memorable story. It worked! Her boys were able to memorize the facts quickly and with minimal effort. With very little review, they could recall the facts even months later! Jennie was so impressed with the success of this method that, years later, she joined with two partners to fully develop the program. Times Tales is the outcome of that endeavor. The most amazing thing about Times Tales is you can truly teach children the most difficult times tables in a mere fraction of the time spent with traditional methods! Our system works by using mnemonic stories to trigger the memory when a set of facts is presented. The program is simple, easy to teach, and appeals to the visual, auditory and kinesthetic learner. As they begin working through the program, most students aren t even aware the story they are learning is really a hidden multiplication problem. It is great fun to watch the look of wonder when the student realizes what they just learned is really a math problem! Step-by-step instructions make it easy for both teacher and student. Simply read through the Instruction Manual, follow the script in the Memory Story Guide, then sit back and watch mnemonics in action! Not only is Times Tales a great deal of fun, but will save hours of endless flashcard review. Thank you for trying Times Tales. Check out our website for more creative learning products, our free newsletter, reviews and much more. Be sure to write or to let us know your success story. We really want to hear from you! 3 HOW DOES TIMES TALES WORK? Times Tales is not a typical question and answer type program. It is a system that incorporates stories and images to help remember the most difficult to memorize multiplication problems. If you follow the instructions, the program WILL work. As you progress through the steps, we suggest that you not get weighted down trying to figure it out. In fact, it isn t even necessary to tell the student they are working on math. The goal is simply to learn the stories. By Step 4 everything will start to make sense. The free trial incorporates the same si step process to learning the times tables as the full version of Times Tales. However, this free trial only covers, and has stories for, the upper 9 times tables. Free trial of Times Tales covers: 96, 97, 9, 99 To get the full version of Times Tales go to: - Times Tales covers the most difficult to memorize times tables: 36,37,3,39,46,47,4,49,66,67,6,69, 77,7,79,,9,99 - FAST - most children learn in two 45 minute sessions! - Non-consumable - can be used by the whole family. - FUN - kids love this learning method and ask for more! Before you begin, print pages 3-19 and cut along dotted lines. STEP 1 - Introduction to Number Symbols IMPORTANT! To ensure the best results, please follow instructions carefully. A. Present page to the student. Introduce the student to the number symbols and the characters that will be used to identify them throughout the memory stories. Use the guide below to discuss the relevance of each number symbol to its given name. 6 - This boy is part of the First Grade Class. Can you see the number si in him? He is a number si because most children start First Grade when they are si years old. 7 - This is Mrs. Week. Do you see the number seven in Mrs. Week? She s called Mrs. Week because there are seven days in a week. - This is Mrs. Snowman. How do you think she got her name? Can you see the number eight in her? 9 - This is the Treehouse. Can you see the number nine in the Treehouse? 3
B. After completing Step A, present page 9 and quiz the student on the name of each number symbol. Refer back to the page for any number symbol the student does not know and review the material again. STEP 2 - Memory Stories A. B. Read Story - Present story A (page 10). Read the story out loud along with the student three to four times. As you read the story, point to the relevant characters. At this point, you do not have to mention anything about the story being a multiplication problem. After the story has been read out loud a few times, go to the net step. Discuss Story - Refer to Memory Story Guide (page 6). Here you will find a short discussion and questions for each memory story. The discussion is only a guide; feel free to add to it as you feel led. Have fun with the stories, emphasizing the answer number as often as possible in your conversation. After all stories (A, B, C & D) have been thoroughly read and discussed, move to the net step. Be sure to keep the numbers in the correct order as you discuss the story. Before moving onto the net memory story, make sure both A & B have been completed. STEP 3 - Student Tells the Story Located on pages 12 & 13 are the memory stories without the tet. Present memory stories A1, B1, C1, & D1 to the student. This time have them tell you the memory story. This does not have to be told verbatim, but should be close to the original and, most importantly, must be said in the proper order. Once the student can successfully tell all four memory stories in the proper order, move to the net step. STEP 4 - Trigger Memory Flashcards The Trigger Memory flashcards help the student to make the connection of how the memory stories are really multiplication problems and that the answer is hidden within each story. For eample, the story of Mrs. Snowman () going to the Treehouse (9) and knocks 7 times on 2 doors is the multiplication problem 9. The 7 times on 2 doors is the answer to the problem (72). Present the Trigger Memory flashcards (page 14 ) to the student. Remind them to think of the characters and memory story as each card is presented. Point to the number symbols on the flashcards, but this time call them by their real name. For eample: Nine (point to the Treehouse) times eight (point to the Mrs. Snowman) equals what? 4
Before moving to Step 5, the student should be able to answer each Trigger Memory flashcard within a few seconds. If the student is slow in answering or stuck on a particular flashcard, you may need to go back and review the memory story. STEP 5 - Regular Flash Cards Present the regular flashcards (page 15) to the student. As you present each regular flashcard remind the student to look at the numbers as number symbols and recall the memory story that went along with them. If the student gets stuck, simply refer back to the corresponding Trigger Memory flashcard (page 14). Remember to have the student recite the multiplication problem, as you would say it using the number s real name, not the number symbol name. For eample: Nine times eight equals seventy-two. Prompt the student to remember what the number symbols are for nine and eight and the memory story that goes along with them. Repeat flashcards as often as needed. Once the student can successfully answer all the regular flashcards in a timely manner, proceed to the net step. STEP 6 - Test A. Practice Test - Have the student take the Practice Test (page 16) which uses the number symbols. If they get stuck, prompt the student to picture in their mind the number symbols and its related memory story. Move to Step B when the student can successfully complete the practice test in a timely manner. B. C. Test Have the student take the Test with the regular numbers (page 17). Move to Step C when the student can successfully complete the test in a timely manner. Verbal Test Challenge the student by quizzing the multiplication facts verbally. Division Flashcards Once the student has mastered multiplication, they can try out their new skill at division! The flashcards are provided to illustrate how multiplication and division work together. The division flashcards (pages 1 & 19) should be presented in the same manner as Step 4 & 5 of the multiplication portion of the program. The student must simply determine which number symbol is missing to correctly answer the problem.. 5
Memory Story Guide The First Grade Class went to the Treehouse to feed 5 pounds of bananas to 4 monkeys. Discussion: Will 5 pounds of bananas be enough to feed all 4 monkeys? Do you suppose those 4 monkeys live in the Treehouse? Do you think the First Grade Class brings 5 pounds of bananas every day to the 4 monkeys? Why do you suppose they do that? Question: Someone went somewhere to feed monkeys. Who was it and where did they go? Answer: The First Grade Class went to the Treehouse to feed monkeys. Question: How many pounds of bananas did they feed to how many monkeys? Answer: 5 pounds of bananas to 4 monkeys. lbs. Mrs. Week went to the Treehouse and raked up 6 bags of leaves by 3 o clock. Discussion: That Treehouse must have dropped a lot of leaves! Have you ever raked 6 bags of leaves? Mrs. Week finished by 3 o clock. What do you do every day at 3 o clock? Do you think she worked all day on those leaves? Is it dark by 3 o clock or is it still light outside? Question: Who went to rake leaves? Where did she go? Answer: Mrs. Week went to the Treehouse to rake leaves. Question: How many bags did she rake up and when did she finish? Answer: 6 bags of leaves by 3 o clock. 6
Mrs. Snowman went to the Treehouse and knocked 7 times on 2 doors. Discussion: Why do you think Mrs. Snowman is knocking on the door? Maybe she is visiting a friend. Do you think anyone is home? When you knock on someone s door, do you knock 7 times? Would your hand get sore knocking 7 times on 2 doors? Do you know why she knocked on 2 doors? She also went to the back door! Hint: Have the student knock 7 times on a table and tell you if they think that is a lot of knocking. Question: Answer: Question: Answer: Someone went somewhere and knocked. Who was it and where did she go? Mrs. Snowman went to the Treehouse. How many times did she knock? 7 times on 2 doors. There were two Treehouses. The first Treehouse grew apples and the second grew only 1 apple. Discussion: Have you ever seen an apple tree? Have you ever seen an apple tree with a Treehouse? Why do you think one tree grew apples while the other tree only grew 1? Maybe someone forgot to water the tree that only grew 1 apple. Question: What grew apples? Answer: Two Treehouses. Question: How many apples did they grow? Answer: The first Treehouse grew apples and the second grew only
