3 ocations The History Museum of Mobile The History Museum of Mobile, a national historic landmark, is a destination in itself. Artifacts, text, audio, video, and hands-on interactives in the Museum s permanent exhibits help Mobile s history come alive. Our Special Exhibition Gallery also changes periodically so that visitors discover something new with each returning visit. Open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. 5 p.m., and Sunday, 1 p.m. 5 p.m. Call for admission charges. Group rates may apply. Fort Condé Fort Condé is a modern day building that was created to look like the French fort that stood in the same location over two hundred years ago. It is a section of the fort recreated at 4/5 scale and opened on July 4, 1976 as part of Mobile s United States Bicentennial Celebration. It serves as a museum for Mobile s Colonial History. The Fort has recently been renovated and has new permanent exhibits. Limited tours are available Monday through Friday. Please call (251) for details. Call for admission charges. Group rates may apply. Phoenix Fire Museum The Phoenix Fire Museum illustrates the history of firefighting in Mobile from its beginnings to the present. Included in the exhibit is a plaque commemorating the firefighters from Mobile s Fire Rescue Department who have died in the line of duty. 4 School Programs History Museum of Mobile Group tours are available Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tours require a minimum of 10 students. One chaperone is required for every 10 students. Large groups may need to visit the museum in shifts. All tours must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance and are scheduled on a first come, first served basis. Self-guided tours of groups of more than 10 people are not permitted at this time. Eye Spy Scavenger Hunt Tour 1 hour (Pre-school 3rd grade) This docent or staff member led tour incorporates a visual scavenger hunt designed with young learners in mind. On this artifact finding adventure, we teach students about what museums do and what artifacts are. Students then look through the museum s permanent exhibits to find special artifacts, and also have the opportunity to try the museum s interactive exhibit components. When the scavenger hunt is completed, all students get a small prize! Footsteps Through Time Scavenger Hunt Tour 1½ hours (4th grade 8th grade) This scavenger hunt through the permanent exhibit, Old Ways, New Days: The Story of Mobile is designed for cooperative learning. The tour is led by a docent or staff member who begins by giving directions and handing out supplies to students. The docent gives an overview of the exhibit, and the students work together to find the answers to questions in that exhibit. The tour can also include the museums upstairs permanent exhibits if the group has enough time. When the scavenger hunt is completed, all students get a small prize! Permanent Exhibits Tour 1½ hours (9th grade 12th grade) This lecture-discussion type of tour is led by a docent and is a tour of the museum s permanent exhibits On this tour, students also have the opportunity to try the museum s interactive exhibit components. Temporary Exhibit Tour ½ hour to 1 hour The type of tour and the grade levels that it is appropriate for will depend upon the exhibition. Behind the Scenes Tour in the Artifact Storage Area ½ hour to 1 hour (9th grade 12th grade) Group size is limited to 15 students. 2 chaperones are required.

5 School tours are led by museum docents and/or museum staff, and are available for visitors from preschool age through high school. Tours may be selected from those listed below, or the Curator of Education will work with school educators to tailor a tour to a specific theme. We can also collaborate with educators to create a tour that is suitable for students with special needs. Alabama Course of Study Content Standards were utilized in the development of tours and school programs. Fort Condé Guided Tour 1 hour (4th grade 12th grade) Guided tours are available Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on a limited basis. All tours must be scheduled at least one month in advance. Please call (251) for details or to schedule a tour. Phoenix Fire Museum Guided school tours are available Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tours require a minimum of 10 students and a maximum of 30. One chaperone is required for every 10 students. Groups that exceed 30 people (including teachers and chaperones) will need to visit the museum in shifts. All tours must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance and are scheduled on a first come, first served basis. Self-guided tours of groups of more than 10 people are not permitted at this time. Please call (251) to schedule a tour. The Phoenix Fire Museum is located 2 and a half blocks from the other museum locations. Guided Tour ½ hour (Pre-school 12th grade) This tour is led by a museum staff member or docent. Students will learn about the history of firefighting in Mobile and see antique fire trucks and equipment. Please call (251) to schedule a tour. Phoenix Fire Museum Scavenger Hunt Tour ½ hour (Pre-school 3rd grade) This docent or staff member led tour incorporates a visual scavenger hunt designed with young learners in mind. 6 Making History Classroom Program This program brings students into the museum classroom where they will complete a make and take project that will complement their tour. Education staff members facilitate the lesson. This option costs just $1 per student. Quilt Squares (30 minutes) Students will learn about the designs, symbolism, and historical significance of quilts as they follow directions to create their own quilt square. Recommended grades: K - 6 TRADE BEADS (30 MINUTES) Students will learn about the history of trade beads and their significance in the colonization of the New World as they follow directions to make their own trade bead bracelet. Recommended grades: 3-9 Quill Pens (30 minutes) Students will learn about the history of writing as they make their own quill pen and then put it to the test. Recommended grades: 3-9 The Museum Store (30 Minutes) Marbled Paper Activity (30 minutes) Students will learn the history and the secrets of the ancient art of paper marbling and then use authentic methods to make their own marbled paper. Recommended grades: 4-12 Native American Pottery (1 Hour) Students will learn about the types of pottery made by the Native Americans, the first people to live in the Mobile Bay area. They will follow directions to make their own pottery using the same techniques as the Native Americans. Recommended Grades: 4-12 African Masks (1 Hour) Lunch (30 Minutes) Students will learn about African masks from the museum s collection and how they are important to various African cultures. They will then make a mask of their own using some of the symbolism and design features found in African masks. Recommended Grades: K-12 You may stop for a lunch break at two of our facilities. 8 Special Events NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM Friday October 20, :00 p.m. 9:00 p.m. Join us for a tribute to comic books and video games at the museum. Dress up as your favorite comic book superhero or video game character. Admission is $10 per adult, and $5 per child ages 6 and up. Children ages 5 and under will receive free admission. Talk to Colonial re-enactors, watch demonstrations, and participate in activities such as: writing with a quill pen, doing laundry the colonial way, playing colonial games, dressing up in colonial clothing, and more.
