1 How To Eat Healthy A Learning Center for Nutrition Science March 30, 2011

2 Introduction Have you ever wondered whether or not you eat according to the food pyramid? How healthy do you eat each day? This learning activity will provide you with the knowledge to understand the importance of eating healthy and the tools you need to make healthy life decisions for your various meals eaten throughout the day and most importantly for the rest of your life. Here you will learn that it is possible to eat the foods you want within a healthy range. The Task The task of this activity is to study the food pyramid, which includes, learning about the six different food groups and the recommended serving sizes for each group, studying the anatomy of my pyramid, balancing between food and physical activity, and how to develop a plan for change in your diet. Thoroughly read over food group worksheet and Anatomy of My pyramid worksheet. Go to to see the daily food plan recommended for you. Take a quiz that has questions from your two worksheets and from the personalized meal plan you created online.

3 Nutrition Science Standard Addressed: 2.1 Use current guidelines and/or technology to determine personal nutrient intake and develop a plan for change. The Process 1. Your teacher has given you a folder with three different sections. In Section A, there is a worksheet with the different food groups and an Anatomy of My pyramid worksheet. Read carefully over both of them because you will be quizzed on the information. 2. When finished reading, you may choose a partner at your table to quiz each other until you are stopped by the teacher. Do not look ahead at other section materials. 3. As a class we will visit the computer lab, where instructions are shown further down. See computer lab activity now. 4. You will be given ten minutes to review all of your material and ask questions if needed. 5. It is now time to take your quiz which has been placed in section C. When finished, staple your personalized food plan and quiz together, then turn it over and remain quietly in your seats until the end of class.

4 Instructions: Computer Lab Activity (section B) 1. Go to 2. On the right side of the screen click on Get a personalized plan 3. Fill out the daily food plan then click submit. 4. Read over the Daily Food Plan recommended for you. When finished reading, print off and then return to instruction #4 under The Process.

5 Name Date Learning Center Quiz 1. Name at least 5 out of the 6 different food groups. 2. Out of the 5 named above, name the amount needed daily for at least 3 of the food groups based on a 2,000 calorie diet. 3. Children and teenagers should be physically active for minutes every day.

6 4. Give at least 2 examples of where your fat sources should come from. 5. Name and describe 2 of the 6 different parts from the Anatomy of MyPyramid worksheet. 6. After getting your own personalized meal plan, what are some new steps you plan on taking to build a healthier you?

7 Materials list for How To Eat Healthy Nutrition Learning Center 1. Review current Nutrition Science standard folder for each individual student in the class 3. White printer paper 4. Tab dividers for sections A,B & C (3) 5. Clip Art that displays the different food groups: Fruits, vegetables, milk, meat & poultry, grains, and oils (optional). 6. Reserve the computer lab ahead of time for at least thirty minutes during your class time. 7. Worksheet print outs and computer lab activity are all found at as well as answers to the quiz. Answer sheet is recommended but optional.
