2 Showcase: Your chance to inspire The Skills Show is the largest skills and careers event, inspiring 72,000 visitors with a huge range of career options alongside the WorldSkills UK Competition National Finals. Showcases are exhibitor spaces embedded into the competition areas, which will bring the competitions to life for visitors, with experts and students demonstrating skills in an interactive and engaging format. Showcases are a vital part of The Skills Show, acting as a bridge between the skills represented by the WSUK Competitions and visitors who may know nothing about that skill. What are showcases? Interactive demonstrations of skills, carried out by students and experts. Engage and inspire visitors about skills. Make WorldSkills UK Competitions more accessible and relevant to visitors. Provide a point of contact for visitors to find out more information about a skill or competition. Conditions The focus of Showcases is on skill-specific, educational content. They need to represent and promote that skill to visitors. We invite all organisations to apply to deliver Showcases, and will select one organisation per skill, based on the best content. Successful applicants are provided the Showcase space at no cost, as well as additional support from WSUK (see page 6 for details), but must operate within the content and branding parameters of The Skills Show Showcase product. 4 Expectations Of Showcase Providers NB: the term skill refers to the skill/profession being demonstrated and competed in. We will work closely with each chosen provider to develop their activity and ensure that the opportunity is maximised and content is as appropriate as possible. All Showcase Providers will be expected to: Design and deliver content that demonstrates the knowledge and expertise involved within your skill, including most/all of the following: oo oo oo oo o o oo Bite-size demonstrations of excellence of your skill in practice (preferably with commentary in order to engage a wide group at a time). Hands-on or interactive aspect of demonstration. Opportunity for Q&A about the skill/industry. Test pieces from previous competitions, showing what competitors are working towards, potentially with some of varying standards. Be a Judge activity: simplified marking scheme so visitors can choose a winner from various test pieces. A Skills Champion (previous competitor) on hand to talk about competition. Provide information for visitors (written and/or verbally) about how this particular skill is important, how it relates to their lives, how it is used in different professions, how you can start a career in this skill, and where you can find further information. Promote the ethos of competitions and the industry. Work cooperatively with the respective Competition Organising Partner, prior to and at the event, to ensure your content is aligned with, and complementary to, the competition activity. To attend the training and familiarisation session on the afternoon of Wednesday 15 November (minimum of one representative to attend). To set up your Showcase area by 6pm on Wednesday 15 November. To occupy your space for the entirety of The Skills Show (9am-4pm on the 16 and 17 November and 10am-4pm on the 18 November), delivering your Showcase to visitors throughout. 4 Showcase: Your chance to inspire

5 The benefits to What yousupport will you receive? Be an ambassador for a specific skill or group of skills, promoting best practice and opportunities. CSR opportunity for your organisation to support your sector, and to promote best practice in the industry. Enhance your reputation and demonstrate excellence to an audience of over 72,000 visitors including students, teachers, parents, community groups, employers, influencers and media. Provide a CPD (Continued Professional Development) opportunity for your staff /students by being part of a large scale event. Meet prospective students/employees and network with employers and other partners. Exposure to WSUK Competition National Finals, allowing you to benchmark against national standards. WorldSkills UK will work with you to ensure sufficient power and services are provided, and to offer operational support throughout the project planning and delivery. WorldSkills UK will promote your Showcase through The Skills Show marketing channels, including the event guide and website. Showcase Providers from FE colleges, Training Providers or Competition Organising Partners are eligible to claim costs of expenses incurred, depending on your organisation s proximity to the NEC. All you need to do is submit your receipts and a form for approval after The Skills Show. Within the counties of Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands, Worcestershire : 500 The rest of England: 1,000 Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland: 1,500 Who can take part? Applications are particularly encouraged from organisations (further education institutions, training providers and Competition Organising Partners) with a strong understanding of the relevant WorldSkills UK competition and/or a working relationship with the Competition Organising Partner. We encourage you to involve previous award winners, from UK competitions or elsewhere. Anyone taking part must be aged 16 or over. Those taking part should represent the diversity of your industry. 6 How we will select you A selection panel of industry professionals will assess your application based on the following: Inspiration and entertainment Will it be of interest to visitors? Will it entertain visitors and keep them them engaged? Will visitors understand it? Will it inspire visitors to seek more information and/or want to work in this sector? Is there an element of visitor interactivity? Is it original or innovative? Educational benefit Does the content demonstrate best practice of the skills within the relevant competition(s)? Which courses, qualifications or careers are linked with your Showcase, and can this be communicated easily to visitors? How will it complement the skills competition(s) and encourage visitors to look further at the competition(s)? What educational benefit is there to you as an organisation? What educational benefit is there to the students or learners taking part? Feasibility How many visitors can engage in the Showcase at a time? Have you considered all costs involved in delivering the Showcase for 3 days and are they realistic and affordable? Has the organisation delivered similar activities? Will your students be confident giving information about the skill or competition to visitors of all ages? Innovation and uniqueness It includes content that has not previously been seen at The Skills Show Will it will be memorable after the event? Does it include a wow factor? Supporting material Any supporting videos, photographs and links are encouraged and will also be reviewed. Any existing collaboration with the relevant Competition Organising Partner or any clear understanding of WorldSkills UK will be considered. 9 3.1 Clearly define how your Showcase demonstration will work (up to 400 words) Consider the following points in your response: What does the demonstration involve? What exactly are you demonstrating? What are your students/learners going to do? How many students/learners are taking part? How many visitors are engaged at any one time? What elements of your Showcase will be interactive and/or hands-on? For elements which are demonstrations (rather than hands-on), will you have a running commentary to keep the audience engaged? 3 Showcase: Application form

10 3.2 Explain how visitors will benefit from the Showcase (up to 200 words) Consider the following points in your response: How comfortable are your staff and students talking to their peers about the competition and skills? How can you guarantee your staff and students will be enthusiastic in their approach to interpreting the industry sector, competition and skills to the visitors? Is your Showcase going to reflect your skill sector accurately and attractively? Will your demonstration inspire visitors to find out more about the sector? What provisions will you have to deliver and/or signpost visitors to further information? 3.3 Operations Each Showcase area will be approximately 6x3m (subject to each space availability). If your Showcase requires a larger space, please explain and justify. With this in mind, please plan how your Showcase activity/activities will be set up. 11 3.4 Why or how will this opportunity add impact to your organisation? What do you expect the students to achieve from the experience of being involved in the project? How will this project add value to the curriculum? 12 3.5 What resources are required for the delivery of your Showcase? Please ensure you have considered all resources and costs required and that your organisation is fully committed to delivering this Showcase, should your application be successful. For example: materials/equipment/storage/ people (both performers and people to manage your Showcase), travel and transportation, costumes, furniture, AV. Please specify if you require access to water, or any other facility, and how often throughout the three days. If known, please also note any electrical requirements for equipment you are bringing, so we can anticipate these needs for you. Showcase: Application form 6

13 4.1 What supporting evidence can you offer to help explain or visualise your Showcase? (up to 150 words) Please provide a short statement with hyperlinks to evidence. Consider the following points in your response: What supporting evidence can you offer to help explain or visualise your Showcase? For example from local competitions, performances, a portfolio of your work in school/college, awards, case studies, press articles, short videos etc. If you would like to provide video or images as part of your application, these must be in the form of hyperlinks to an external website or YouTube. Please do not submit images or video content as attachments with your application.
