2 Philosophy Research Paper Instructions: Write a research paper that covers any philosopher that is featured or mentioned in the Philosophy For Dummies textbook. Your choice of paper must meet my approval. The completion of this paper is a requirement of this class. Your paper must address the views of your philosopher of the following questions: 1. Ethics and decision making. 2. Morality. 3. Decision making/choices/right and wrong. 4. Death. 5. Existence of God. Expectations: 6-8 pages Typed and double spaced 12 Type Size Times New Roman Font Cover page - must include title, your name, class Bibliography -This page (this is not part of the 6 to 8 typed pages) -Remember, the bibliography goes at the back of the paper - Format will be MLA - Head the page as Bibliography In-Text Citations - Must have at least 4 - Used after a direct quote or a statistic. Margins - Standard margin settings Sources -You must have at least 3 sources - 2 of these sources must be books - Encyclopedias do not count as books -Wikipedia and Answers.com are not valid sources. period and date 2

If not, 50 points will be deducted from your score. Be very careful of plagiarism! 3

Books, journals, notebook, notes, and writing implement. If you leave anything in your locker you will not be able to go get it. HOMEWORK/ASSIGNMENTS Bring completed homework with you. Hand in at the start of class. Failure to do homework will lose 50% if turned in by the end of the unit. Research papers or major projects will lose 10% for each day late. After the Unit is over I will not accept late assignments unless you have discussed the problem with me. You will be allowed one day for every day absent to get your make-up work turned in. Assignments will be picked or handed in while you work on your daily journal. If you receive less than 70% on an assignment you may redo it. Maximum credit on a redone assignment is 70%. It is due the next day. 4

5 CONTRIBUTE TO CLASS DISCUSSIONS Express your ideas. If you defend your beliefs you solidify your beliefs. Use proper language when expressing your ideas, I don t expect you to contribute to discussions every day but you must make the effort over the course of the quarter. BEHAVIOR When I am talking, you don t talk! I expect that everyone in my class will conduct themselves as adults. This is a place to learn. If someone is impeding one of these, you will be asked to leave the class and go to the office for extreme situations. CELL PHONES TARDIES Please keep your cell phone and other devices in your pocket, locker or backpack. NOT ON YOUR DESK! If I hear it or see it, it is mine! During tests all cell phones are placed in the phone holder. Tardy is defined as not being in your seat when the late bell rings. This includes roaming around the room. PASSING PERIOD The passing period is long enough to get your materials, stop by the bathroom, and make it to class on time. JOURNALS There will be a journal assignment every day. The length of your journal response must be 4-6 sentences. You will do your journals for the first 5 minutes of class while I take attendance. These journal responses will be graded every day for effort. 5

6 DAILY ASSIGNMENTS If you miss a day of school for a school related activity and an assignment is due that day, I expect you to hand in the assignment before you leave. The only exception is if you leave the school prior to 6:00 AM or before the school day begins. If you leave early, come in and place your assignment in the appropriate basket or you may slide it under my door.
