1 AICE (AS Level) Mathematics Pure Mathematics 1 and Pure Mathematics 2 LRosado@somersetcanyons.com Room: Year At A Glance: This will be an exciting year in math class as we will be covering a range of topics to prepare students for the Cambridge Internation Examination. The Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) is an academically rigorous, internationally used, specialized, English language curriculum offered to students in the higher levels of secondary school intended to prepare students for university academics. The class is designed to be very demanding of students, meaning there will be a wide variety of topics covered in just one year. Such topics include: functions, sequences, trigonometry, vectors, differentiation, integration, and much more. With hard work and determination you will find this class to be one of the most fulfilling and rewarding math classes you ve ever taken! Mrs. Rosado is available for students to help them learn and grow personally and academically. Her door is always open so please reach out at any time with any questions or concerns. Supply List: Pencils and/or Pens College Ruled Lined Paper Graph Paper Calculator (only as shown) Optional: Expo markers/erasers, hand sanitizer, paper towels, clorox wipes, binder clips, printer paper, etc.

2 Class Rules: 1. Be on time, on task, and prepared to learn everyday. 2. Respect the teacher, the classroom, other students, and yourself. 3. Be responsible for your own learning. 4. Clean up after yourself and your peers. 5. Keep all personal electronics put away. Consequences: 1 st Verbal Warning and/or Seat Change 2 nd Parent Contact and/or Lunch Detention 3 rd Lunch Detention/After School Detention 4 th Referral *Depending on severity of infraction, consequences may escalate to the appropriate reprimand Classroom Procedure: Students will enter the classroom quietly and prepared. They will be seated and write down their home learning assignments and any other announcements/reminders. Then they will begin the Bell Ringer. After reviewing the Bell Ringer, we will spend minutes answering questions on the home learning assigned from the previous class. Next, the home learning may be checked, or a home learning assessment may be given. The last hour of class is reserved for the new lesson. Assignments & Home Learning Home learning will be assigned daily. It will not always be collected or checked for credit. Keeping up with home learning assignments is solely the student s responsibility. If a student chooses not to do an assignment, they will get behind significantly. Students will be held accountable for their home learning by random assignment collection and home learning assessments. Home learning assessments will be unannounced, but can be expected weekly or biweekly. This is where 1 question from the home learning assignment will be selected by random draw, collected, and graded for correctness. There are three ways students will know what is due and when. 1) It will be announced in class. 2) It will be written on the board. 3) It will be posted on the school website. Students are 100% responsible for know what is due and when. AICE Exams AICE Math 1 AS will consist of two exams: Paper 1 (P1) and Paper 2 (P2) which will both be taken in June. Students who pass the AICE exam given at the end of the year, will be given a college credit for MAC1147 (PreCalculus Algebra and Trigonometry).

3 Absences When a student is absent, it is the student s responsibility to find out what they missed. They should get notes from a classmate, look at the class website, and/or arrange a time with Mrs. Rosado to get tutored on the material that was missed. When a student is absent, they will have two days for every day absent to make up their work. For example, if a student is absent on Monday and an assignment is to be turned on Wednesday, then it will be due for them on Friday (along with any new task assigned on Wednesday). If a student misses a quiz or a test, they have ONE WEEK from the day they return to schedule a retake. If no attempt to reschedule is made, the student will receive a zero. I strongly suggest to NOT miss class unless you have to. Getting behind can become detrimental to your survival of this course. Late Work No late work will be accepted as this is a college level course. The only exception to this rule is late work due to being absent. Students are responsible to turn in all work on the assigned due date. Cell Phones Cell phones are not permitted in class unless given permission by Mrs. Rosado. If a student is caught with a cell phone, Mrs. Rosado has the right to seize the cell phone until the remainder of the day. If caught a second time, Mrs. Rosado will again seize the cell phone until parent/guardian can make arrangements to pick up it up. Additional consequences may be given for these infractions Tardiness Students should never under any circumstance come to class late without a pass. All students should be inside of the classroom when the bell rings. If a tardy student comes to class without a pass, they will be instructed to sign their name in the tardy log. On the third tardy, the student will be issued an after school detention. Perpetual tardiness will result in being referred to administration. Restroom Only one student will be permitted to use the restroom at a time. Students must ask for permission (using hand signal) and sign out before leaving class. Students will be allowed to use the restroom during class 3 times per quarter. Please be aware of this rule and adjust your bathroom use accordingly. There will be no exceptions to this rule, unless a student has a doctor s note. Moving About Room Students should not leave their seat for any reason. The only exception is when the class is doing group activities (which require movement), or if given permission by Mrs. Rosado. This includes throwing away trash, getting a tissue, sharpening a pencil, etc.

4 Conduct Students are expected to come to class every day with a positive attitude, prepared and ready to learn. Students are not to be disruptive or disrespectful. Consequences will be assigned for such infractions. Dismissal All trash must be picked up from the floors and desk. All classroom materials must be put away neatly. No one should pack up his or her belongings until instructed to do so. Mrs. Rosado will dismiss students, not the bell. Grades Grades will be updated on Edline every Friday at 4:30pm. Grading Scale: 35% - Classwork, Home learning assignments, Home learning assessments 25% - Pop Quizzes, Announced Quizzes 40% - Exams Receiving Help Outside of Class Time If extra help is needed outside of the classroom, please see Mrs. Rosado before school, during study hall, or during designated tutoring times. Mrs. Rosado s tutoring schedule will always be written on the board. Her goal is to help you succeed and achieve. She is happy to help you, so please take advantage of tutoring opportunities! Incentives Positive praise and good grades are not the only incentives that can be earned. Mrs. Rosado implements a reward system in the form of tickets. Students can earn reward tickets anytime they do the following: earn an A on a quiz or test, assist another student with problem solving, correct a mathematical error made by Mrs. Rosado, ask a brilliant question, etc. At the end of each quarter, there will be a ticket party. Students have a chance to enter their reward tickets for a chance to win homework passes, quiz/test bonuses, candy, and other prizes. *Students are responsible for the safe keeping of their tickets. If they are lost or stolen, Mrs. Rosado will not give replacement tickets. Plagiarism/Cheating Mrs. Rosado has a no tolerance policy for cheating. Students will be researching others work, whether it is for a project or research paper. Plagiarism will not be tolerated under any circumstances! Plagiarism also includes copying another student s work or giving your work to another student to copy. If a student is caught plagiarizing, they will receive an F for that assignment and a 1 in conduct for the

5 nine weeks. They will receive a written notice and parent contact will be made immediately. The conduct grade cannot be improved upon for that 9-week grading period. A referral by the teacher can be submitted to administration depending on the severity and/or frequency of the offense, whereas administration will determine if any further punishment is deemed necessary. This is a math department policy. Cheating is also an unacceptable offense and not tolerated under any circumstances! Cheating includes (but is not limited to) copying off another students work, allowing another student to copy your work, using any unapproved aides such as cell phones or other electronic devices, written materials, "cheat sheets", and anything that may unfairly provide a student with an answer other than their own brain. If a student is caught cheating, they will receive an F for that assignment and a 1 in conduct for the nine weeks. They will receive a written notice and parent contact will be made immediately after the infraction. The conduct grade cannot be improved upon for that 9 week grading period.
