7 JCSA (Junior Cycle Student Award) 2016 / 2017 is the 3 nd year of the new JCSA programme. Change is gradual and positive. English, Science & Business Studies will be examined in NCCA (National Council for Curriculum & Assessment) website dedicated to details on the new Junior Cycle Student Award programme.

8 The Role of the Year Head The Year Head has a responsibility for the welfare of the year group. The Year Head oversees student: Attendance & Registration Academic progress Pastoral care Discipline

9 Attendance & Registration Meet students for registration every morning at 8:35 am. Check notes for absence and notes requesting that students leave school early. An , note in the student diary or phone call can be used to excuse absence. Check uniform. Acknowledge any problems that need immediate attention.

10 Academic Progress The Year Heads oversee the academic performance of each student in 1 st Year. Individual meetings with students will be arranged to discuss progress, if necessary The following will be monitored: Homework journals (checked each week) Presentation of work Organizational skills Any problem areas identified

11 Students will be provided with the following: A study skills workshop prior to Christmas exams in November. Revision lists for each subject 1 month prior to Autumn and Summer Exams. Study plan for Christmas and Summer Exams.

12 Pastoral Care The Year Head is responsible helping all students to integrate into their classes. Subject teachers will liaise closely with the Year Head on academic and pastoral care matters. Parents will be contacted by the Year Head if a student is causing concern / underachieving or if there is notable progress being made in the area of behaviour or academics. Parents should contact the Year Head immediately with any pastoral or academic concerns.

13 Bullying issues will be taken very seriously and will be dealt with according to Sutton Park Schools Anti Bullying Policy. Our Anti Bullying Policy is available in the downloads section of the school website under Child Protection.

Lockers All students have been assigned a locker. Students must have a lock for their locker as the school does not provide locks. All locks must have a spare key.

Students can give me their spare key for safekeeping. Please do not allow students to bring unnecessary valuable items into school. If this is unavoidable, the items should be kept with the student at all times.

17 Homework Journals All students have a homework journal. Students must use the homework journal to note any written / reading / learning and revision homework. Parents must sign the journal every week. The Year Head will check and sign all student diaries on a weekly basis. Notes of absence, requests for students to leave early or correspondence with individual teachers can be recorded by parents / guardians in the homework journal.

20 Discipline Yellow & Red Card System Wednesday Penalty Teachers will document behavioural or academic issues on a Yellow or Red card. Offences for a Yellow & Red cards are included in the Yellow & Red sections of the Pyramid of the School Rules Infringement. Parents / Guardians will be contacted by if a students receives a Yellow Card. Students in receipt of multiple Yellow Cards may be put into Wednesday Penalty at the discretion of the Year Head.

21 A Red Card may automatically result in a Wednesday Penalty. Parents / Guardians will be contacted. Wednesday Penalty: Library 1:45 3:40 pm Two / Three Red Cards - parents will be contacted / called in for a meeting with the Year Head. Further disciplinary measures may be taken.

22 Non - Behavioural Issues. Sanction: Lunchtime Detention 1:20 pm -1:45 pm every day. Lunchtime detention will be given for the following: Incorrect Uniform / No P.E Gear. Chewing Gum anywhere on the school campus / Littering. Late to School / No note for absence. Using hand held devices between classes. Lateness to class after Snack Break at 11:05 am and Lunch at 1:45 pm.

23 Awarding Positive Behaviour Positive behaviour will also be affirmed through the use of a Blue Card system. A Blue Card may be awarded for Helpfulness to other students & teachers / Any student who displays good Citizenship or is a good Ambassador for the school / Showing good example / Fostering the ethos of the school.

24 Homework Teachers have committed to giving homework each night in the form of reading work, written work, learning work or revision work. Students are expected to complete a minimum of 1 ½ hrs homework each night. It is very important that students recap on everything they have covered in class on that day.

25 School Reports You will receive 4 school reports during the school year: October & Easter reports based on homework, continuous assessments and project work. Christmas & Summer reports based on formal exams.

26 Extra-Curricular Activities 2016 / 2017 After school extra curricular activities take place on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday between 3:55 pm and 4:40 pm. After school extra curricular activities take place on Wednesday between 1:45 pm and 3:30pm. 1 st year students are expected to participate in extra-curricular activities and will only be allowed to leave the premises if parental permission is given in the form of a note / .

29 Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT) All 1 st year students will take a CAT assessment. CAT assessment will be computer based assessment. Numerical, non-verbal and verbal reasoning skills are assessed. Identifies pupils strengths, needs and learning preferences. Informs target-setting and the development of individual learning plans. A sound basis for tracking student progress.
