1 2210 Calculus Syllabus Instructor: Mr. Varant Chinchinian Course Description: This course is designed for students who have completed Pre Calculus. Students will study the mathematics of change, velocities and accelerations, also the mathematics of tangent lines, slopes, areas, volumes, arc lengths, centroids, curvatures, and a variety of other concepts that have enabled scientists, engineers, and economists to model real-life situations. Although Pre calculus mathematics also deals with velocities, accelerations, tangent lines, slopes, and so on, here is a fundamental difference between Pre calculus mathematics and calculus. Pre calculus mathematics is more static, whereas calculus is more dynamic. Calculus is a limit machine that involves three stages. The first stage is Pre calculus mathematics, such as the slope of a line or the area of a rectangle. The second stage is the limit process, and the third stage is a new calculus formulation, such as a derivative or integral. Required Text: Calculus AP Edition: Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic (Pearson, 5 th Edition, 2016). Course Outline: 1. Prerequisites for Calculus 2. Limits and Continuity 3. Derivatives 4. More Derivatives 5. Applications of Derivatives 6. The Definite Integral 7. Differential Equations and Mathematical Modeling 8. A good rule of thumb is to compare your behavior in this class to that at work. What is not acceptable in a workplace is not acceptable here. O: Outstanding: Student has exemplary behavior and has turned at the most one assignment late, has maximum participation points, and always has materials ready for class. S: Satisfactory: Student has occasionally broken classroom rules and has turned in at the most two assignments late, has more than average participation points, and has not brought materials for class only once or twice. N: Needs Improvement: Student has broken classroom and school rules and has turned in at most three assignments late or has failed to turn in one assignment, has average participation points, and not brought materials for class three or four times. U: Unsatisfactory: Student frequently breaks classroom rules and has turned in more than three assignments late or has failed to turn in two or more assignments, has below average participation points, and not brought materials for class more than four times. 3 Standards Students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that promotes a proper learning environment and reflects positively on themselves, their classmates, teachers, family and community. Each student automatically becomes a citizen of our school, both receiving privileges and accepting responsibilities including: Respect of Property: Keep your school a clean, neat and safe environment. Respect of Authority: Show respect, follow direction and identify yourself and activity when asked. Respect for Others: Show courtesy and tolerance; respect differences; make others welcome. Respect for Self: Be successful and reach your full potential. Be the best you can be. Supply List All supplies should be with the student in the Algebra I classroom: Textbook Graphing calculator 3-ring, 1.5" binder Wirebound notebook, 3 hole-punched 8.5x11" graph paper, in binder Binder dividers Pencils (no pens allowed) Eraser Sharpener Ruler Homework Policy Homework will be assigned every day and will be due at the beginning of the class period the next day. Late assignments will automatically lose 20% of the total grade per day. The student will receive a grade of 0 if he/she does not turn the homework assignment. Complete work should be shown in assignments unless otherwise directed. Just the answer will not earn full credit on assignments needing complete work, including multiple choice questions. Homework will not be graded if it doesn t include the following at the top of the first page: Full name Due date Section number Page numbers Question numbers Each homework assignment will be corrected and returned to students the next day. Students can correct their mistakes, return the homework the next day and receive credit. -3-

4 Students are allowed to help each other, but are not allowed to copy the homework. If students are caught copying homework, both students will receive a zero. For students who were absent, they will have two days after returning to complete and turn in the assignment without penalty. For long absences a sufficient time will be given based on the circumstances. Students are encouraged to check the school s Web site regularly to get information about assignments when they are absent. Students should download the TWS every two weeks for the list of assignments, and check the Classes/Assignments page on the teacher s page on the Web site. Binder Keep a well-organized binder to help you in studying for quizzes and tests, and organizing your papers. Your binder should have the following divisions: Lesson sections organized chronologically and numerically, with the following: o Warm-Up o Classwork o Homework Formulas Important notes For the lesson sections, students should add the homework page(s) after they receive the corrected homework from the teacher. Binders will be graded during the test at the end of each chapter. To receive full credit for your binder, all sections should be complete. Quizzes and Tests: During each chapter, students will take two quizzes and one test. Missed tests and quizzes can only be made up after school during Office Hours. Students have three days from the day of the missed quiz/test to make up for them. All work due to an unexcused absence is worth a zero. If an absence is prolonged, see me to develop a make-up calendar. A quiz or a test can be retaken during Office Hours, only after the student corrects his/her mistakes for the first quiz or test. No credit will be given for the corrections. After retaking the quiz or test, the awarded grade will be the highest between the two scores. In the first instance of cheating, the student will receive an 'F' grade for the work involved. Subsequent cheating will result in disciplinary action that may lead to loss of credit for the class. Students should download the TWS every two weeks for the list of homework assignments, quizzes and tests. -4-

5 Hall Passes Students out of class must have with them a hall pass issued by a staff member. Students without a pass will be returned to their classroom and/or disciplined.
