1 Mathematics (3 credits) Intermediate Algebra Fall Semester 2016 Instructor: Jeremy Parrott Office: Swart Office Hours: MWF 11:30 am - 12:30 pm, and by appointment. Textbook: A. Angel and D. Runde. Students. 4 th Edition. Elementary and Intermediate Algebra for College Course Objectives: The goal of this course is to get you familiar with some foundational concepts of Intermediate Algebra and to become more adept problem solvers. Grading: Grading will be based off of 3 categories. 1) In Class Activities 20% 2) Exams (4 Exams) 15% (60% total) 3) Final Exam 20% Homework: Each day there will be a homework assignment. These assignments are designed to help you practice the concepts you have learned in this class. Without completing the homework in a timely manner, you cannot expect to excel in this class. Invest some time so you can review your solutions to the assignment to help you with exams and quizzes. In Class Activities There will be a series of in class activities for which you will participate. These activities will include homework quizzes, problem solving activities, and in class discussions. If you are absent on the day of an in class activity for whatever reason, you will receive a 0 for that activity. There will be no make-up activities. Exams: If I am not contacted prior to exam time and you are absent for an exam, your score for that exam will be a zero. There is a cumulative final exam in Math 103. The suggested exercises listed on the syllabus in bold are practice exercises for the cumulative final exam. Outside Resources: The Swart 301 Developmental Mathematics Laboratory provides free walk-in tutoring for students. The Swart 301 tutoring schedule is posted at Students are strongly encouraged to actively solve all suggested exercises listed on the syllabus and to use the Swart 301 Laboratory as a resource for assistance with any questions generated while completing homework exercises. Calculator: The required calculator for this class is a TI-30xa or equivalent. A cell phone is not an appropriate calculator for this class. I do encourage that you limit your calculator usage to appropriate computations rather than every computation.
