2 Is this Gold? New prospectors often have trouble early with the question of is this gold?. Here are some ways to find out if your golden piece is Real Gold: or Fools Gold (mica and pyrite). Blond sand is about 2 times the density of water. Gold is 19 times the density of water. This means under water, gold is much heavier than anything else in the pan. It will still be in the pan after the gravel, blond sand and black sand have washed out. If the golden piece is large enough, pick it with your fingernail or a pin to see if it s soft and malleable or brittle and hard. Gold is the most malleable metal. It s not gold if it breaks or is really hard. Gold retains a brilliance and shine in the shade. Fools gold does not. New 3-Month Raffle begins in April! Come to April 12th s meeting and see what great Prizes and GOLD I ve put into this BIG Raffle No foolin, Steve February had 2 Great Opportunities to Participate and Educate. Our SWWGP Club did panning demonstrations at the Willamette Valley Sportsman's Show in Albany Oregon. This was a Saturday and Sunday event. Over the two days we showed 500 people how to pan and they got to keep their gold. The gold was provided by the Ministerial Assn. who sponsored the show. A lot of people came and we all had a great time! Here are the folks who participated: Steve Lewin and Ken Didier were in charge; then there was Norm and Betty Erickson, 4 people from the Brownsville Club, Linda Williams, Richard Pluff, Randy Harper, and Daniel Keesee. That same weekend, Tom Fest and Marvin Kruger went up to the Bedrock Prospectors Winter Festival, in Puyallup WA. Lilli and Toni went too. They all got to try out different metal detectors from the dealers, and all the local metal detecting clubs participated. Then they had a chili feed. It was a fun day and a good idea for an event we might like to put on. Thank you Everyone! Steve Lewin, Education Chairman
