1 Langlade County 4-H Newsletter Inside this issue: Raffle Winners 2 Hi my name is Samantha Straley and I am excited to be the Interim 4-H Youth Development Educator for Langlade County. For some of you that don't know me, I actually was a cloverbud and then graduated from 4-H in Langlade County. In my years in 4-H I was very active in the livestock project, the livestock committee, photography, Project Meetings Ice Cream Social Care Timebank Club of the Month Camp registration Forms! 4-H Calendars and in various other projects. I loved showing livestock and was very active in showing beef at the fair. Through 4-H I was not only able to grow into a leader, I was able to find my life passions, agriculture and showing and raising beef cattle. I recently have graduated from the University of Wisconsin River Falls with a degree with agriculture and marketing communications with a minor in animal science. While I was at college I was very active in multiple agriculture clubs and organizations that provided me with experiences to better my leadership skills. Without 4-H I wouldn t be where I am today. I wouldn t of grown into the leader I did, I wouldn t of chosen the college that I did, I also wouldn t be in the two working positions I am today if it wasn t for 4-H. 4-H truly has changed my life, and has helped me in so many ways. The Langlade County fair is accepting applications for the 2017 Fairest of the Fair! The successful candidate will receive a $ scholarship payable after the state fairest competition in January Fairest candidates can be male of female, must be 18 by January 1, 2018 and be a resident of Langlade County. Applications can be picked up in the UW Extension office at 837 Clermont St. Antigo. All applications must be returned by March 31, 2017 all candidates will be scheduled for an interview date to be arranged. Market Animal Weigh-In Sheep/Swine Weigh-in April 7, 6:00pm-8:00pm 4-H Ambassador Meeting will be Sunday April 2, 3:00 pm at the 4-H Office Poultry meeting April 27, :30 p.m. Wolf River Room, in the Resource Center. MAQA UPDATE Their will be two MAQA Trainings May 7, 9:00 am-noon Clover Room (Langlade CO. Fairgrounds) June 6, 9:00 am-noon-eau Claire River Room (4-H office building) Please make sure you attend one of these trainings as it is a requirement to sell at the Market Animal Auction.

4 Begin to Plan your Fair Projects! Fair Books and entry forms will be ready mid May to be picked up from the Extension office or from your Organizational Leader. As you begin to plan, here are a few things to remember: You may exhibit only in those projects that you are enrolled in. They will be listed on your entry form. The Swine Show will once again be Wednesday 6:00 p.m. The Youth Rabbit Show will be Thursday at 8:30 a.m. The Youth Poultry judging will be Friday at 9:00 a.m. Scrapbooking entries are in the Communications Department you must be enrolled in one of the Communications projects to enter here. Horse members must choose which classes they want to be their Premium classes on their entry form. Don t wait until the last minute! Things may seem very busy now, but working on your Fair Projects a little at a time now will save you a huge headache later. Have fun and learn a lot! 4-H Cancellation Policy 4-H Programs are automatically canceled if: 1. The local school districts close due to inclement weather. 2. We are under a Winter Storm Warning. If in doubt, check Facebook or call the UWEX office. Badger Dairy Camp is an annual camp held in June and is open to youth between the ages of 12 and 18. This camp, held on the beautiful University of Wisconsin Madison campus, provides an excellent opportunity for youth to get hands-on experience learning how to fit and show animals. Youth also learn about the purebred cattle industry and attend workshops including Roaming Through the Rumen. Instructors for the camp include dairy industry leaders, graduate students, and UW professors. Each year the camp is open to one hundred youth. This three day event is open to all dairy youth between the ages 12 and 18The 2017 Badger Dairy Camp will be held June Stop in the 4-H office to pick up an application!

6 Care Timebanking Timebanking is a time-based money that helps to build circles and network of mutual support. With timebanking, you give one hour of service to another, and receive one time credit. An hour is always an hour regardless of the service offered. You can use the credits in turn to receive services or you can donate them to others. Timebanks are formed when people come together to use time credits to achieve a shared goal. Many choose to focus on community building. But timebanks have also focused on tutoring in schools, health and wellness efforts, hospital discharge support, juvenile justice, helping seniors to age in community, civic engagement and more. TimeBanks USA has worked closely with organizations applying timebanking on many different fronts. Here s a quick list: young children in elementary schools, (Chicago School District) families coping with emotional disorder, (Blended Funding, King County, Washington) seniors wanting to stay at home, and needing to feel they matter, (Onion River Exchange) patients in hospice and their loved ones, (Community Exchange, LeHigh Valley Hospital, PA) refugees and asylum seekers seeking to rebuild community, (Holy Cross Center, London, UK) social workers redefining their role from providers to co-producers, (University of Utah, Graduate School of Social Work) regular, everyday people seeking to make bridges, not walls, between people, (Hundreds of timebanks) Our local Care Timebank offers many services for giving and receiving. Transportation, Pet Care, Reading, Yard Work, Tax Help, Child Care, Website Design and Mending just to name a few. 8 Club of the Month Bryant HI-flyers were busy making pizzas as a club fundraiser these past couple months! In true 4-H style the club decided to donate a portion of their proceeds to the Special Olympics! Their very own Codie Howard, presented the check to the Special Olympics on behalf of the club!! 13 July 10, 9:00 AM-4:00 PM Summer camp is an excellent opportunity for youth to make new friends, get reacquainted with old friends, continue learning over the summer, and have fun! Adult volunteers and teen counselors will be leading fun and educational camp programs! Where: Camp Susan: County Rd B, Deerbrook, WI Age: K-6th grade Cost: $15.00 per camper from Langlade County $25.00 per camper from Oneida County. Please note that the $ $25.00 will cover all costs lunch, workshops, and bus transportation from Antigo to rustic Camp Susan!
