3 2 Presenter Biographies Interactive Elevator Pitch 1:15 2:00 pm Erik Monsen, PhD Dr. Monsen joined the University of Vermont's Grossman School of Business in August 2014 as an Associate Professor and the Steven Grossman Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship, and in January 2015 he was awarded a secondary appointment as Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences. His career has crossed disciplinary (engineering, management, economics) and geographic (US, Germany, UK) boundaries on his journey from designing better aircraft to designing better entrepreneurial organizations. Building on personal experiences as an aerospace engineer and business consultant in American and European aerospace organizations, his mission is to aid technology and research organizations, both public and private, to become more entrepreneurial and create new value for society. Bonnie Reese, MBA Bonnie Reese is an entrepreneur, student, and former VCET Senior Associate. After earning her MBA at Babson College, Bonnie founded Radius Tracking Systems, a business that created an RFID tracking solution for commercial laundries in Boston. After serving as the CEO for Radius for three years and successfully securing client funding, Bonnie moved to Vermont and started a consulting company where she advised start-ups and growing companies on business development best practices. She learned the venture capital side of the entrepreneurial ecosystem through a year-long appointment at the Vermont Center for Emerging Technology and worked with hundreds of start-ups to improve their pitches and business plans. Bonnie is currently a full-time PhD student in UVM's Natural Resource Department researching Renewable Energy Entrepreneurship through the NSF's IGERT program.

4 3 Presenter Biographies Ask the Experts Career Panel Discussion 2:00 3:15 pm Cathleen Geiger, PhD Dr. Geiger is a self-described Homo sapiens with responsible B+ personality whose career straddles the mid-atlantic and New England regions, with occasional excursions to the Arctic. She earned her PhD (1996) in Engineering from Dartmouth College after obtaining a MS in Oceanography at the University of Bergen (Norway) and a BS in Marine Science from Southampton College. Her postdoctoral work was done at the Goddard Space Flight Center using ice-ocean climate models to assess global climate. This led to concurrent independent research positions beginning in 1998 at the University of Delaware and the USA Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory in New Hampshire researching sea ice dynamics. Dr. Geiger transitioned to faculty positions at both institutions in 2007 during which she lead polar ice research camps as part of expedition teams. She currently holds three jobs: Affiliated Research Professor of Geography at the University of Delaware, Adjunct Professor at UVM, and most recently, Clinical Research Administrator at the Norton Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. In these roles she continues to develop innovative techniques for understanding and communicating core standards of research and education as part of her interest in human geography, space, and place.

5 4 Presenter Biographies Jeralyn Haraldsen, PhD Dr. Haraldsen is the Grant Proposal Manager in the UVM Office of the Vice President for Research. In this role, she provides grantsmanship, writing, and editing support to faculty, with a focus on responsiveness to a funding agency s requirements. In addition, she provides overall project management assistance for large or complex grant proposal submissions. Dr. Haraldsen was trained as a bench scientist and has gained broad and extensive experience in scientific communication. She has a BS in Biotechnology from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and went on to complete PhD training in Molecular Microbiology at Tufts University in 2003, and postdoctoral training in parasitology and cellular microbiology at the University of Vermont in She was mentored in providing grant proposal support by working with the Office of Proposal Development at Tufts University. She is an active member of the National Organization of Research Development Professionals (NORDP). Since 2007, Dr. Haraldsen has assisted principal investigators from diverse disciplines in the preparation and submission of over 150 grant and federal contract proposals to a variety of funding agencies. Paul Held, PhD Dr. Held earned a BS from the Albany College of Pharmacy, and master s and doctoral degrees from Albany Medical College where he specialized in Pathology and Molecular Biology. His postdoctoral experience from was here at the University of Vermont, working with Dr. Nick Heintz to study protein assemblies at DNA replication sites and their involvement in cellular proliferation. Dr. Held joined BioTek in 1993 as a research scientist, where he developed automated microplate methods for protein quantification. Currently he is the Application Laboratory Manager. His responsibilities include managing the day to day operations of the laboratory as well as writing application notes based on BioTek instrumentation.

6 5 Presenter Biographies Keynote Speaker 3:30 4:30 pm Alan Dove, PhD Dr. Dove is a science writer, editor, and instructor in biology, writing, and public speaking. He earned his PhD (1998) in Microbiology from Columbia University and has since worked as a freelance writer and producer of various types of science-related content, including the weekly podcast This Week In Virology, which he co-hosts with his former PhD advisor, Dr. Vincent Racaniello. His writing has been commissioned by numerous high-profile journals, including Science, The Scientist, The Journal of Cell Biology, Nature Medicine, and Nature Methods. Alan is a certified private pilot, and knows a lot about web design, radios, and puns. He lives in Western Massachusetts, and enjoys shoveling snow with his wheeled snow shovel, or wovel.
