1 About Aetna Select Provider Directories The facilities listed in this directory are Aetna Select List providers. Cost increases for outpatient services can have a dramatic effect on a member s out-of-pocket costs for certain services. Using Select facilities can help control out-of-pocket costs. In some cases, the difference in cost between accessing care from a Select facility versus a non-select facility may be as high as 40 percent (according to Aetna claims data). Centers for diagnostic radiology procedures, sleep centers, urgent care centers or walk-in clinics, ambulatory surgery centers and dialysis centers may all be designated as Select facilities. To determine which providers are designated for the Select List, we first calculate the amounts we paid for services (including professional expenses) associated with specific procedures at each participating facility in the market, using the most recent twelve (12) months of completed data. In performing this calculation we do exclude those outliers that may inappropriately skew the data. Once we have the average amount paid for each procedure, we determine a market average for each service and then compare each facility to the market average. Finally, we calculate a weighted average of these relative market averages to generate an overall cost comparison of each facility. The Select List includes those facilities whose overall weighted average falls at or below the overall weighted average for all of the facilities in the market, as well as those facilities necessary for business reasons. The Select List is not an evaluation of the quality of the facility; the Select List is only an evaluation of the relative cost to the plan for services provided by that facility. If Aetna members use non-select providers, they may have higher out-of-pocket costs. We evaluate and update our list of Select facilities and services every six months. All patient care and related decisions are the responsibility of the physician and patient, and this information should not dictate or control clinical judgment regarding the appropriate treatment of any individual patient.
