1 French 1 Syllabus Northside ISD The French 1 language course is designed to achieve the following objectives as aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Languages Other Than English (TEKS for LOTE) and The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language (ACTFL): To satisfy the needs of the students who wish to pursue specific work to increase their ability to listen, speak, read, and write the French language. To provide the students with the opportunity to compare and contrast their language and culture with those of French speaking countries and other parts of the world. To provide students with the opportunity to relate the topics in their textbook to other subject areas, making French relevant to the students overall academic experience. To encourage the students to seek opportunities to practice French outside of the classroom by interacting with family members and members of the community. To encourage the students to understand that they are members of a global society and help them develop survival skills in the language so they may function adequately in social interactions and discussions. To provide the students with the opportunity to utilize technology incorporating the usage of the audio-lingual and multi-media labs. COURSE COMPONENTS: The components of reading, speaking, writing and listening are embedded in three major modes of communication: INTERPERSONAL: The ability to ask, understand, and answer questions. INTERPRETIVE: The ability to comprehend main ideas and identify supporting details. PRESENTATIONAL: The ability to present information by creative use of written or spoken language. TEXTBOOK ADOPTED BY THE NORTHSIDE ISD: D Accord 1 by Vista Higher will be intertwined in all levels and thematic units, and will prepare students for the next level of the target Language. ADDITIONAL TEXTS: online resources and other printed material in the target language. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Learning will include themes and topics as presented in the course outline below. Upon completion of units there will be major exams that will incorporate all skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In each unit, the students are introduced to cultural and/or historical facts of the Frenchspeaking world. Exams and quizzes will be given at the teacher s discretion.

2 The international language labs are used consistently and students are expected to stay on task when they attend. Labs are used to expand the intellectual knowledge of the student and to reinforce the teaching of the classroom. Truancies and tardiness will follow campus policies. Discipline referral and parental contact will follow. According to district and state standards; the teacher and the students are expected to use the target language at least 90% of the time, comprehensible to the student. Upon completion of the level 1 course, students are expected to achieve novice-mid proficiency level. GRADING POLICY: Grades adhere to the Northside Independent School District International Languages Policy. Formative Assessments: 50% daily work, homework, quizzes, labs, workbook activities, etc. Summative Assessments: 50% major exams and projects Academic dishonesty such as cheating and plagiarism will result in a 0 grade. COURSE OUTLINE FOR LEVEL 1: The proposed outline is very general. Occasionally there will be changes due to special projects assigned by individual instructors. *Essential Overarching Questions will be intertwined in all levels and thematic units, and will prepare students for the next level of the target language. First Six Weeks FIRST SEMESTER Theme 1: Personal and public identities: units 1 and 2 (suggested time 6 weeks) Unit 1: Salut! (units 1A and 1B suggested time 3 weeks) Language and identity, multiculturalism, beliefs and values. Introduction to the course, why learning French? Meeting and knowing people Greetings and good-byes Introductions and expressions of politeness Identifying self and others Describing self and others vocabulary related to greetings, farewells and introductions terms to identify people articles nouns and gender of nouns

3 adjectives and adjective agreement, subject pronouns the verb être present tense, c est and il/elle est, numbers 0-60 The Francophone world French diversity greetings and manners Unit 2: Au lycée (units 2A, 2B suggested time 3 weeks) Life as a student. School in the United States, in France and in the Francophone world School, school subjects and supplies. School schedules Daily routines vocabulary for academic subjects, telling time, days of the week, months of the year, calendars and schedules, dates, expressions for time, colors -er verbs present tense spelling changes in cer and ger verbs, the verb avoir present tense, asking and answering questions, negation, expressing likes and dislikes French high schools le bac high education in France Canadian French immersion program student life university life

4 Second Six Weeks Theme 2: Families and Communities: units 3 and 4 (4A) (suggested time 6 weeks) Unit 3: La famille et les copains (suggested time 3 weeks) Family life and professional life. Family members, friends and relationships. Types of families, marital status. Pets Describing people and pets Professions and occupations, professional qualities. vocabulary for family members, status and professions, some words for pets, age, birthdays possessive adjectives regular and irregular descriptive adjectives numbers French families different types of relationships and friendships professions and occupations Unit 4: Au café. (4A) (suggested time 3 weeks) Places in and around town. Places in a city The café: a popular place to meet. vocabulary for places in a city the verb aller in present time prepositions for places regular -ir verbs asking and answering more questions popular places to go to in the Francophone world life in a city communities

5 Third Six Weeks Theme 3: Contemporary Life: units 5 (5A), 8 and 6 (6A) (suggested time 6 weeks) Unit 5: Les loisirs (5A) (suggested time 2 weeks) Leisure activities Pastimes and activities Sports Frequency vocabulary for sports and leisure activities adverbs irregular ir verbs, -re verbs, jouer vs faire contractive articles le football sports and leisure activities in the Francophone world Unit 8: Chez nous (suggested time 2 weeks) Life at home Types of houses and apartments, gardens Parts of the house and furniture Chores at home and appliances vocabulary for parts of the house terms for furniture and appliances savoir (savoir faire) and connaître verbs the verb faire in present tense the verb habiter housing in France and in the Francophone world housing interiors
