2 Term 2 Angle laws & Polygon Theory / Circles Can use basic angle laws to find missing angles: in triangle, on a straight line, around a point Can use intersecting line angle laws to find missing angles: scissor angles, z-angles, c-angles and f-angles. Can use the triangles method to find the sum of the interior angles of any polygon Can find the exterior and interior angles of regular polygons Can combine angle laws to find all angles in a regular polygon Can find the circumference of a circle using C = d (and find the radius if given the circumference) Can find the area of a circle of a circle using A = r 2 (and find the radius if given the area) Can use the circle formulae to find arcs and sectors of fractions of circles Can find the speed of objects using both a proportional method and using the formula s =d/t Can find the average speed of multi-stage journeys There will also be a number of problem solving questions to conclude the paper. 3 English 1 1 hour 15 minutes Two sections lasting 35 minutes each (+5 minutes reading time) (25 marks for each section) Level Two Common Entrance Paper SECTION A: PROSE COMPREHENSION Pupils will be required to answer questions on one (possibly two) passages of non-fiction writing. There will be approximately five reading comprehension questions. These will test how well pupils can understand, analyse and evaluate the passage(s). SECTION B: WRITING PAPER Pupils will be asked to select one of four essay titles. Three essay titles will require the use of prose for a practical purpose (writing to persuade, writing a speech, writing to advise etc ). The fourth essay title will ask the boys to respond to an open-ended question on a novel that has had an effect on them. Boys should focus revision on going over different writing techniques needed to write for a practical purpose and the literature studied in class. This may be a whole poem, or an extract. The subject of the poem could be anything at all, but it is chosen to be interesting and thoughtprovoking. There will be approximately five comprehension questions. Boys will need to comment on use of imagery, rhythm and rhyme, as well as any other literary devices used in the poem. SECTION B: WRITING PAPER In this section pupils will be given four questions, from which they must choose one only. The questions will be aiming to provoke imaginative, descriptive or narrative responses. Boys should focus revision on writing to describe techniques, as well as depicting character and setting. Electricity & Magnetism: circuits (parallel / series, LEDs, LDRs, reed switches, resistance etc), magnetic fields, electromagnets. 2. Forces & Motion: forces & linear motion (speed), force & rotation (moments), force & pressure. Boys must know the relevant formulae. 3. Light & Sound: the behaviour of light, refraction, reflection, dispersion, hearing, vibration & sound. 4. The Earth & beyond: the solar system eclipses, satellites The boys have a copy of the syllabus requirements which shows the areas / content needed to be revised. 8 History 1 hour Section 1 An evidence section consisting of three sources on First Crusade or the Thomas Becket: 20 marks. Section 2 An essay explaining the reasons or consequences of a historical event or actions of a historical figure: 30 marks. Section 1 The evidence question will be on the First Crusade or Thomas Becket (there will not be a choice: only one of these topics will be on the paper it is necessary to revise both). Boys will need to write an evidence-based essay on three sources and their own knowledge and understanding.
