Introduction University Language Centre University Language Centre The University Language Centre (ULC) is part of the School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures within the Faculty of Humanities. The School brings together the largest concentration and widest range of highquality research and teaching in language-based disciplines in the UK and consists of nine other areas of activity: French Studies, German Studies, Italian Studies, Linguistics and English Language, Translation and Intercultural Studies, Spanish and Portuguese Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, Far Eastern Studies, and Russian Studies. The ULC has over 30 years experience of running English language courses for international students, and these courses are accredited by the British Council, through Accreditation UK (formerly English in Britain). The ULC s pre-sessional courses are also accredited by BALEAP (British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes). The ULC is a UCAS Centre, a regional IELTS test centre, a centre for Cambridge (FCE, CAE, CPE) and Pitman ESOL examinations. In addition to this, the ULC advises university staff on English language qualifications and the recommended period of pre-sessional study. Teaching staff also conduct research into aspects of language learning/teaching. A summary of our full-time EL programmes is given below: Gateway Programme for Personal, Professional and Academic Development; International Summer School; Pre-sessional English Courses (BALEAP-accredited); In addition to these we provide: Part-time exam preparation courses (FCE, CAE, CPE and IELTS); Special courses for individuals and groups; English Language testing and in-sessional support for registered students; Refresher courses for overseas teachers of English As part of the University Language Centre we are able to offer students a fully integrated university language learning experience. Our students have full registered student status, and access, therefore, to all University resources and facilities. 2. Staff Profile We have a permanent full-time teaching staff of 25. We are able, therefore, to draw on considerable expertise both in the area of General English/Exam Preparation and English for Academic/Specific Purposes. The experience of the academic team ranges from 5 to 30 years, and covers most parts of the world. Most have English Language Teaching qualifications extending beyond postgraduate diploma level (the minimum required to claim qualified teacher status as recognised by the British Council). The nine support staff have specific responsibility for the areas of Admissions, Finance, IELTS and Student Welfare and Accommodation. Additional technical support is provided by specialist staff in the Open Learning Centre (within the University Language Centre) and the University s Media Centre. 3. Student Profile

2 Our students come from all over the world and follow English language courses for varying lengths of time. Students enrolling on an English Language course do so for many reasons, but these can broadly be defined as follows: Students who have recently finished their studies in their own countries, or who are taking a break from academic study, and who need English to help further studies/future careers. A large proportion of these students come from Japan, Korea and Taiwan, but an increasing number are from Latin America and Europe. This group of students are self-funding. Students preparing to continue their studies at The University of Manchester. Over the years, this group have represented the following disciplines: Development Policy and Management; Education; Social and Economic Studies; Science; Computation; Arts; Medicine; Biological Sciences; Law and Business; Textiles; Chemical Engineering; Electrical Engineering; Physics; Civil & Construction Engineering; Paper Science. This group may be self-funding or sponsored. Students whose spouses are following a degree course at the university. These students fall into two groups; those who wish to learn English for personal development purposes and those who wish to learn for future career or study plans, the latter being the largest group. Most of these students receive government sponsorship. Students following a course of study at The University of Manchester who wish to study (part-time) for an externally recognised English language examination (Cambridge FCE, CAE, CPE). These are mainly European and self-funding. Students and Professionals who wish to prepare for and take IELTS (International English Language Testing Service). These are people already based in the Greater Manchester area and are self-funding. Professionals who need English to accelerate promotion. This group are mainly from Europe and the Far East. Some are self-financing; others receive support from their employer. Individuals who wish to learn English their own personal development. This self-financing group is truly international, and varies in size depending on the economic success of world markets at any one time. Qualified and experienced overseas teachers of English who wish to enhance their teaching techniques and further develop their knowledge of English. These have come from Latin America and Eastern Europe and can be self-funding or sponsored by their university/college/school. 4. Resources and Facilities 4.1 Office/Teaching Accommodation The main reception office is located in Oddfellows Hall, 97 Grosvenor Street. Teaching takes place in the Lower Ground floor of the Samuel Alexander Building on Oxford Road, Oddfellows Hall and the main campus. The Student Welfare and Accommodation Officer has an office in Oddfellows Hall. We have 17 dedicated teaching rooms in the Samuel Alexander Building and Oddfellows Hall and additional teaching rooms are booked through the University s Central Booking system. 4.2 Samuel Alexander Building - The Open Learning Centre 19 compact combined TV/VCRs (fed by an 18 channel distribution system, which includes British terrestrial channels as well as satellite TV channels from around the world); 3 large TVs for group viewing (equipped with multiple headphone jacks); an off-air recording service; 2 teaching laboratories (25-booth/18-booth); 22 PC work stations with on-line facilities; a web-based self-access facility specifically for EFL students; a staffed lending library offering a range of print and audio materials for independent learning. 4.3 Oddfellows Hall a 20 position multi-media laboratory an audio laboratory 2

The Faculty of Humanities and Manchester Computing clusters, amounting to a total of 105 PC stations within Samuel Alexander Building and more than 200 on Campus North. Course Design: Gateway Programme This full-time course is a combination of both general English (Core Modules) and areas of language specific to the student s personal, professional or academic needs (Target Modules). The structure of Gateway enables students to follow different learning routes according to their aims and objectives and has been carefully designed for two broad groups of students: i. Students who are intending to study or carry out research at a British university. Students returning to their home university, visiting research students and academics may also find the course useful. ii. Students who wish to improve the overall proficiency of their language for personal or professional reasons. Content Core Language Module: These classes focus on improving grammar, vocabulary, the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) and study skills. A course book is given to students for this part of the programme. Target Modules: These classes cover a range of topics and skills based on students specific needs and current language proficiency. Modules offered may vary from term to term. 1. Target: University Study Academic English: academic listening, speaking, reading, writing and study strategies. Topics for IELTS: focusing on vocabulary for different topics and skills development Skills for Undergraduates: completing a UCAS form, writing a personal statement, interview skills IELTS Test Preparation: strategies for practising the four skills, test practice English for Management, Science & Technology, Humanities & Social Science: academic skills, reading discipline-related texts, development of discipline-related vocabulary Progression: Students intending to go onto university may progress on to a pre-sessional course (if they meet the English language entry requirements) or directly to their academic programme/research. 2. Target: Personal and Professional Development Skills Enhancement (oral/aural): practising oral communication including fluency, accuracy on pronunciation Skills Enhancement (reading/writing/vocabulary): practising reading strategies and skills, improving vocabulary range and working on fluency and accuracy of writing British Cultural Studies: British Culture & the Arts including film theatre & television English for Business and Management: skills work, reading business-related texts, business and management vocabulary Self-Access The self-access facility is an integrated system, bringing together on-line, paper-based and CALL materials into one computer-based programme. The group will attend an induction session with the Self-Access Coordinator, a member of our teaching staff on. These facilities are available for students to use on a daily basis after class. 7. Assessment and Reporting The members of the group will be assessed at the start of their programme and placed in groups according to their level. Progress reports on each individual will be provided on a regular basis. Assessment/evaluation of the assignment will be included on the final report. 8. Social Programme During the academic year (September - June), students have membership of the International Society. Students with families can take out family membership. In addition to the many advantages offered by membership of the International Society, students may go on two of the full-day trips (Saturday/Sunday) per four week period of study as well as attending the activities held at the International Society free of charge. Sports Activities: Students may use the wide range of sports facilities available in the two university Sports Centres and the Manchester Aquatics Centre, and are charged at normal student rates. 4

5 9. Student Welfare ULC has a full-time Welfare and Accommodation Officer who is responsible for the non-academic welfare of students. At the start of the course the Welfare and Accommodation Officer provides a social and welfare induction to all students. She is then available for students to consult on any welfare and accommodation problems they may encounter during the period of their course.
