1 396 About the Contributors Mohammad Ataul Karim is Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor of Academic and Students Affairs of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth where he is a professor of electrical and computer engineering with expertise on computing, electro-optical displays and systems, information processing, and pattern recognition. During , he was Vice President for Research of Old Dominion University in Virginia. Professor Karim is an elected fellow of the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Optical Society of America (OSA), Society of Photo-Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE), the Institute of Physics (InstP), the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET), and Bangladesh Academy of Sciences. He has authored 18 books, 7 chapters, and over 375 research articles. In addition to being the Editor of Optics & Laser Technology and an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Education, he guest-edited to-date 33 journal special issues. Karim received his BS in Physics in 1976 from the University of Dacca, Bangladesh, and MS degrees in both Physics and Electrical Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering all from the University of Alabama, respectively, in 1978, 1979, and Mohammad Kaykobad is Professor of Computer Science and Engineering of Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology. He received his M.S. (Honors) in Engineering in 1979 from Odessa Maritime University, in Russia, M.Eng. degree in 1982 from the Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand, and completed PhD in 1986 from the Flinders University of South Australia. Elected a fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences, he is known for his leadership role in pushing forward the higher education agenda of Bangladesh, in particular, in science, mathematics, and information technology. He has authored 15 books, over 45 refereed journal articles, and over 200 opinion pieces in leading dailies. Recognized as the Outstanding Coach in 2002, he has been leading BUET team to participate in the World Finals of Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) ICPC since He has also played a pioneering role in introducing Bangladeshi school/college students to International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI). Manzur Murshed is an Associate Professor and Head of Gippsland School of Information Technology, Monash University, Australia, with major research interests in the fields of Video Technology, Wireless Communications, Information Theory, Distributed Coding, and Security and Privacy. He received his B.Sc.Eng. Areas of his teaching and research interests include Digital Signal Processing, Communication Engineering, Microcomputer and Microprocessor based systems, Feedback Control Systems, and Electronic Instrumentation. He is an author or co-author of nearly 180 papers and research articles in various national and international journals and conference proceedings. He holds a PhD degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from the University of Salford in Manchester, England. He has been the President of Bangladesh Electronics Society for about 10 years. Sabrina Ahmed is a Database Specialist in Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), Head Quarter in the PMT (Proxy Means Testing) Project. D from the Department of Electronics and Information Engineering, Toyohashi University of Technology, Aichi, Japan. Mohammed Nazrul Islam is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Security Systems at the State University of New York at Farmingdale. He received his BS and MS in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 1991 and 1994, respectively, and his PhD from Muroran Institute of Technology, Japan, in Prior to joining Farmingdale, he worked as a Research Scientist at Old Dominion University, an Associate Professor at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of South Alabama, and as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of West Florida. 6 Gareth J. F. Jones is a Principal Investigator in Centre for Next Generation Localization (CNGL) and Faculty Member of the School of Computing, Dublin City University. He was previously with the Department of Computer Science, University of Exeter, and conducted research at the University of Cambridge, and as a Toshiba Fellow in Japan. He holds B.Eng and PhD degrees from University of Bristol. His research interests are in applications of information retrieval including multilingual and multimedia search technologies. 8 Fiona Ross specializes in non-latin type design and typography, having a background in languages with a PhD in Indian Palaeography (SOAS). From 1978 to 1989, she worked for Linotype Limited (UK), with responsibility for the design of their non-latin fonts and typesetting schemes. Since 1989 she has worked as a consultant, author, lecturer, and type designer; her recent work as a designer has been in collaboration with Tim Holloway and John Hudson (as Associate Designer at Tiro Typeworks), developing original typeface designs for clients that include Ananda Bazar Patrika, Adobe, Microsoft, and Harvard University Press for the Murty Classical of Library of India. In 2003, Fiona joined the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication at the University of Reading (UK), where she is Reader in Non- Latin Type Design and Curator of the Department s Non-Latin Type Collection. Maxim Roy received his PhD in Computer Science from Simon Fraser University, Canada. His primary research interests lie in Natural Language Processing (NLP) mainly focused in statistical machine translation, co-reference resolution, and entity extraction techniques. He received his M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Windsor. Currently, he is team lead in the language group at Northside Inc., Canada, where he is involved in R&D of a full NLP pipeline (parsing, reasoning, and generation) for a revolutionary video game technology featuring natural language-based interaction and advanced AI.
