1 QUALIFICATIONS FOR TEACHING POSITIONS IN THE GREATER VICTORIA SCHOOL DISTRICT # 61 The necessary qualifications for a teaching position in the Greater Victoria School include: 1. A Bachelor s Degree or academic equivalent in an appropriate field of study; 2. A valid B.C. teaching certificate; 3. A knowledge of a broad range of effective instructional strategies in order to meet the diverse needs of all students; 4. Effective communication skills with students, parents and colleagues; 5. Recent, successful, substantive teaching or practical experience in the relevant subject area. In addition to the foregoing generic qualifications, the necessary qualifications for specific teaching positions are indicated below. Article C.21 Definition of Qualifications 1. In this Agreement necessary qualifications in respect of a teaching position means the possession of a valid teaching certificate for the Province of British Columbia, and a reasonable expectation that the teacher can perform the duties of the position based on the following criteria: a. Relevant teaching experience in the subject or teaching area. b. Relevant educational preparation. c. Relevant qualities such as: the teacher s commitment, temperament, experience, less formal training, and past performance. d. Evidence of ability to perform the duties of the position in a satisfactory manner. 2. It shall be the responsibility of each teacher to ensure the Human Resource Services Department has on file the appropriate documentation substantiating necessary qualifications as defined in Article C.21.1 above. 3. Should any appeal arise as to whether a teacher has or does not have the necessary qualifications for a teaching position, the appeal shall be referred to Step 3 of the Grievance Procedure of Article A.6 in this Collective Agreement within five (5) working days from the date that the teacher has received layoff notice from the Board, or from the date that an applicant who has recall rights has received notice from the Board that the applied for position has been filled by another applicant. The appeal shall be in writing and must state the grounds on which the appeal is being lodged. See Letter of Understanding - Appeals During Staffing Process. 2 Teaching Experience 1. Teachers with relevant experience, teaching Kindergarten, Primary, Intermediate or Middle School as a Generalist, who have held a contract and successfully completed an entire instructional cycle* at that level may be deemed qualified for TTOC call-outs and job postings. 2. Teachers with relevant experience teaching a subject area, who have held a contract and successfully completed an entire instructional cycle* at that level may be deemed qualified for TTOC call-outs and job postings. 3. Positions which may require the minimum academic preparation as set by the District include the following: Learning Support, English Language Learner, Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Vision Impaired, Counselling, Library and those positions requiring language proficiency for teaching in language programs other than English. *An entire instructional cycle is defined as planning and delivering subject curriculum and assessing students progress. Academic Preparation 1. Primary Generalist A Bachelor of Arts with a Post Degree Program in (Elementary) Education or Bachelor of Education (Elementary) Degree Primary teaching methodology course A major program concentration in the areas of primary education. 2. Intermediate Generalist A Bachelor of Arts with a Post Degree Program in (Elementary) Education or Bachelor of Education (Elementary) Degree Intermediate teaching methodology course A major program concentration in the areas of intermediate education. 3. Middle Generalist A Bachelor of Arts with a Post Degree Program in (Middle) Education or Bachelor of Education (Middle) Degree Middle or Elementary school teaching methodology course A major program concentration in the area of middle education.

Aboriginal Education: Primary, Intermediate and Middle A Bachelor of Education (Elementary) Degree which includes completion of Indigenous Education or A Bachelor of Arts with a Post Degree Program in Education or Bachelor of Education (Elementary) Degree prior to 2012 must provide completion of Indigenous Education Certificate Primary or Intermediate teaching methodology course 5. Aboriginal Education: Junior and Senior A Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Degree which includes completion of Indigenous Education or A Bachelor of Arts with a Post Degree Program in Education or Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Degree prior to 2012 must provide completion of Indigenous Education Certificate Secondary teaching methodology course 6. Band: Middle, Junior and Senior A Bachelor of Arts with a Post Degree Program in Education or Bachelor of Education Degree Band and music courses at 300 level or higher equal to 3 full year courses or 6 half year university Band or music teaching methodology course 9. Biology A Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Applied Science, with a Post Degree Program in (Secondary) Education or Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Degree Biology courses at the 300 level or higher equal to 3 full year courses or 6 half year university Science teaching methodology course

Chemistry A Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Applied Science, with a Post Degree Program in Education or Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Degree Chemistry courses at the 300 level or higher equal to 3 full year courses or 6 half year university Science or Math teaching methodology course 12. Choral: Primary, Intermediate, Middle, Junior and Senior A Bachelor of Arts with a Post Degree Program in Education or Bachelor of Education Degree Choral and music courses at the 300 level or higher equal to 3 full year courses or 6 half year university Choral or Music teaching methodology course 13. Computer Education: Primary, Intermediate, Middle, Junior and Senior A Bachelor of Education Degree Computer Science courses at the 300 level or higher equal to 3 full year courses or 6 half year university Computer Science, Science or Math teaching methodology course 14. Counselling: Primary and Intermediate A Bachelor of Education at the appropriate level or academic equivalent and a Master s Degree in Counselling or Counselling Psychology 15. Counselling: Middle, Junior and Senior A Bachelor of Education at the appropriate level or academic equivalent and a Master s Degree in Counselling or Counselling Psychology 16. Culinary Arts: Junior and Senior A Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Degree Red Seal Certificate - Journeyperson Cook

Dance: Primary, Intermediate, Middle, Junior and Senior A Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Fine Arts, with a Post Degree Program in Education or Bachelor of Education Degree Dance courses at the 300 level or higher equal to 3 full year courses or 6 half year university courses Dance or Fine Arts teaching methodology course 18. Drafting: Junior and Senior A Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Degree with a concentration in Technology or Industrial Technology, Drafting or Computer Science courses at the 300 level or higher equal to 3 full year courses or 6 half year university or academic program in progress with acceptable completion date 19. Drama: Middle, Junior and Senior a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Fine Arts, with a Post Degree Program in (Middle / Secondary) Education or Bachelor of Education (Middle / Secondary) Degree Drama courses at the 300 level or higher equal to 3 full year courses or 6 half year university courses Drama or Fine Arts teaching methodology course 20. Earth Science A Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Applied Science or Bachelor of Science, with a Post Degree Program in (Secondary) Education or Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Degree Science courses at the 300 level or higher equal to 3 full year courses or 6 half year university Science or Physical Geography teaching methodology course 21. English: Junior and Senior A Bachelor of Arts with a Post Degree Program in (Secondary) Education or Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Degree English courses at the 300 level or higher equal to 3 full year courses or 6 half year university English or Social Studies teaching methodology course 22. English Language Learners: Primary and Intermediate A Bachelor of Education (Elementary) Degree Principles of Teaching ELL & Organization and Instruction of ELL are required UVIC courses (447 & 448 = 3 credits and 72 hours)

French Immersion: Middle A Bachelor of Education (Elementary, Middle or Secondary) Degree A demonstrated fluency and facility (both oral and written) in French and English and TFI score of 395 for oral and 420 for written 26. French Immersion: Junior and Senior A Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Degree A demonstrated fluency and facility (both oral and written) in French and English and TFI score of 395 for oral and 420 for written Relevant courses for the specific subject at the 300/400 level to equal 18 credits Relevant subject teaching methodology course 27. French as a Second Language: Middle A Bachelor of Education (Elementary, Middle or Secondary) Degree 28. French as a Second Language: Junior and Senior A Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Degree A French Language Degree Bilingual Dogwood or equivalent (EDCI 469 Teaching Oral French)

Hearing Impaired - (Deaf and Hard of Hearing) Bachelor of Education Degree and Master s degree or diploma in the education of the deaf and hard of hearing or certification by the Canadian Association of Educators of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CAEDHH) Fluency in sign plus the qualifications for specific teaching assignments are required for the Provincial School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CAEDHH) 31. History A Bachelor of Arts with a Post Degree Program in (Secondary) Education or Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Degree History courses at the 300 level or higher equal to 3 full year courses or 6 half year university Social Studies teaching methodology course 32. Home Economics: Middle, Junior and Senior A Bachelor of Home Economics with a Post Degree Program in (Secondary) Education or Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Degree Home Economics courses at the 300 level or higher equal to 3 full year courses or 6 half year university Secondary teaching methodology course 33. Inclusive Education - (Learning Support/Special Education): Primary, Intermediate, Middle, Junior and Senior A Bachelor of Education Degree at the relevant level or academic equivalent and registered at the time of application and on schedule to complete within one year of the date of appointment, shall have one of the following: o A Diploma in Special Education from an accredited university; o A Master s Degree in Special Education

Library: Primary, Intermediate and Middle A Bachelor of Education (Elementary / Middle) Degree or academic equivalent and registered at the time of application and on schedule to complete within one year of the date of appointment, have obtained one of the following: o A library education teaching area e.g. 4 courses from a recognized university o A diploma in school librarianship from a recognised university o A Master s Degree in Library Science 35. Library: Junior and Senior A Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Degree or academic equivalent and registered at the time of application and on schedule to complete within one year of the date of appointment, have obtained one of the following: o A library education teaching area e.g. 4 courses from a recognized university o A diploma in school librarianship from a recognized university o A Master s Degree in Library Science 36. Mathematics: Junior and Senior A Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Applied Science, with a Post Degree Program in (Secondary) Education or Bachelor of Education (Secondary) degree Math courses at the 300 level or higher equal to 3 full year courses or 6 half year university courses Mathematics or Science teaching methodology course 37. Music: Primary and Intermediate A Bachelor of Arts with a Post Degree Program in (Elementary) Education or Bachelor of Education (Elementary) Degree Music courses at the 300 level or higher equal to 3 full year courses or 6 half year university courses Music teaching methodology course 38. Outdoor Education: Junior and Senior A Bachelor of Education with a Post Degree Program in (Secondary) Education or Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Outdoor Education courses at the 300 level or higher equal to 3 full year courses or 6 half year university which are and Wilderness First Aid certification Physical Education teaching methodology course

Physical Education: Junior and Senior A Bachelor of Physical Education with a Post Degree Program in (Secondary) Education or Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Physical Education courses at the 300 level or higher equal to 3 full year courses or 6 half year university courses such as fitness, games, dance, active health, leadership and gymnastics which are Physical Education teaching methodology course 40. Physics A Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Applied Science, with a Post Degree Program in (Secondary) Education or Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Degree Physics courses at the 300 level or higher equal to 3 full year courses or 6 half year university Math or Science teaching methodology course 41.
