Whether you are aiming to boost your career prospects, are looking for a change of direction, or are hoping to gain a Higher Level qualification flexibly and without the expense of University, we can help you achieve success. In this brochure you will find out more about our range of programmes, the progression routes available to you, and key information on financial support. Our HNC/D industry qualifications are widely recognised for professional development, career progression and entry to the second or third year of a University course, while our Access programmes are aimed at those aged 19+, without traditional qualifications, looking to go straight to University. We also help those wanting to pursue a career in teaching gain their Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), and offer a Foundation Diploma in Art, for practising artists or designers, or those wanting to progress onto University to study a creative degree. 6 Higher Education Financial Support For HNC/D and PGCE learners Tuition Fees Studying at NCC can save you up to 9,000*. If you are planning to study a HE qualification and are not self-funding the course, you are eligible to apply for tuition fee funding via the Student Loans Company. The Tuition Fee Loan doesn t have to be paid back until your income is over the current UK repayment threshold of 21,000 a year. Tuition fee loans are applicable to both full-time and part-time study. Maintenance Loan If you are studying full-time, you may be eligible for a Maintenance Loan to help with living costs. This is dependent upon your household income. The Maintenance Loan has to be paid back but not until your income is over the current UK repayment threshold of 21,000 a year. Childcare Grant (CCG) If you are studying full-time, you might also be able to apply for a CCG, which helps with childcare costs. This is dependent upon your household income. All Nelson and Colne College higher education programmes are designed to be valuable employment-related qualifications in their own right and also to be part of a progression towards a full Honours Degree. 9 Foundation Diploma in Art and Design Qualification: BTEC Level 3 / 4 Foundation Diploma in Art and Design Duration: 1 Year Full-time Who is the programme aimed at? Learners who have completed at least one A Level or a BTEC Diploma in an Art discipline who are looking to study a Higher Education programme to progress their career within this sector. Entry requirements You must be aged 18+ and have a C or above in at least one Art A Level or Merit in a BTEC Diploma in an Art discipline as well as Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths, plus a satisfactory Art portfolio. This course is open to mature learners, subject to interview. Consideration will be given to applicants with no previous qualifications, but who have well developed art skills. What will I learn? The fast paced curriculum is taught within a hard-working but supportive atmosphere, helping you develop the skills you need to make the most of your time at College and allow progression to the next level of your education. Learners on this course will be given the opportunity to discover their own artistic strengths through a range of different projects, methods and materials, with a strong emphasis on research and personal development. Areas of study may include Fine Art, Photography, Textiles and Fashion, 3D Sculpture, Printmaking and Graphics. If you want to explore your options first, there s a diagnostic pathway option where you can sample different curriculum areas before choosing a specialism. We encourage an exploratory approach to study, giving you a critically creative environment and a wide range of skills to start you off on your career within the world of visual arts. What would successful completion of this programme lead to? If you are serious about Art and Design and would like to progress on to University, this one year course is designed to prepare you for entry on to degree level art and design programmes. What does it cost? For course fees please enquire. Financial support may be available. Learners are asked to pay a consumable fee of 85, which will provide them with a great value kit of art materials, a sketch book, some mount card, a visit to a gallery and some contribution to the materials used on the course. Additional costs include sketchbooks, printer credits, specialist materials for final pieces and non-compulsory trips and visits that could include, the Liverpool Tate and Walker Gallery, Manchester Art Galleries, The Stitch and Knit Show at Harrogate, The Media Museum and Impressions Gallery in Bradford, The Harry Potter Studios in London and a residential visit to London. Learners who have completed a Level 3 course in Business or a related subject, who are looking to study a Higher Education programme locally to progress their career within this sector. Entry requirements GCSEs in English and Maths at grades A*-C are preferred, however, a functional skills equivalent will be considered. A Level 3 qualification in Business or a related subject. Learners who do not have Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths but can demonstrate sufficient skill at interview to undertake the course will be offered GCSE English and/or Maths alongside the HNC course. You must also bring proof of any current qualifications along to your interview. Please note that learners without the formal entry criteria but with relevant experience will be considered. Learners will undertake a diagnostic test to determine their current skills level/ability. What will I learn? You will study units covering a wide range of Business topics, to give you a broad understanding of how businesses operate and develop in a dynamic marketplace. How is the programme assessed? A series of written and practical work is assessed by your tutors and will determine your overall grade. What would successful completion of this programme lead to? This course can offer opportunities for learners to continue their study of Business at degree level over two further years study. The practical nature of the course also means skills are developed to help you begin a career in the Business sector. What does it cost? For course fees please enquire. Student loans are available. 12 Pre-Access Certificate in Health Professions and Social Care Qualification: Level 2 Pre-Access Certificate 1 Year 2.5 days per week Who is the programme aimed at? This course is designed for learners aged 19+ looking to progress onto the Access Diploma in Health Professions or Social Care, but who don t have GCSE Maths and English. Entry requirements A successful interview and a Maths and English assessment. Following on from your assessment, individuals will be recommended for either GCSE or functional skills in Maths and English. Please note that for future progression onto university in the Health Care route, learners will be required to have Maths and English at GCSE level, in particular for the Nursing pathway. What qualifications will I gain? English GCSE or Functional Skills, Maths GCSE or Functional Skills and a Pre-Access College Certificate to HE. What would successful completion of this programme lead to? On successful completion of your Level 2 course, you will progress on to the Access to Higher Education Diploma in either Health Professions or Social Care. What does it cost? 13 Access to Health Professions Qualification: Access to HE Diploma (Health Science Professions) 1Year 3 days Who is the programme aimed at? Learners aged 19+ wanting to return to education and who are keen to progress to University and enter in to careers within the Nursing/Health sector including Adult, Child and Mental Health Nursing, Midwifery, Radiography, Disability Studies, Paramedic Practice, Nutrition and Occupational Health. Entry requirements GCSEs in English and Maths at grades A*-C. Additional qualifications (e.g. Science) may be needed for entry onto specific degree programmes. Some universities may have variations to their entry requirements. Details of these will be discussed at interview. You must also bring proof of any current qualifications along to your interview. What will I learn? Biology Units of study may include: Anatomy and physiology Endocrine system Disease Health Units of study may include: Diagnosis and management of physiological disorders Health definition Health communication Study Skills Units of study may include: Essay writing Presentation skills Research skills Reflective practice How is the programme assessed? Learning is assessed in a variety of methods to prepare you for study at University. These may include an extended essay, presentations, timed assessments under controlled conditions and report writing. What would successful completion of this programme lead to? 14 Access to Social Care Qualification: Access to HE Diploma (Humanities and Social Sciences) 1 Year 3 days Who is the programme aimed at? Learners aged 19+ wanting to return to education and who are keen to progress to University and enter into careers within Community Development, Criminology, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Probation Services, Youth and Community Studies. Entry requirements GCSEs in English and Maths at grades A*-C, or Level 2 functional skills equivalent. Additional qualifications may be needed for entry on to specific degree programmes. Applicants without both GCSE Maths and English may be considered depending on the degree you wish to progress on to. Details of these will be discussed at interview. You must also bring proof of any current qualifications along to your interview. What will I learn? Social Care Units of study may include: Equality and diversity Safeguarding Role and function of social services Study Skills Units of study may include: Essay writing Presentation skills Research skills Reflective practice Sociology Units of study may include: Perspectives Family (roles and changes) Stratification (poverty) How is the programme assessed? Learning is assessed in a variety of methods to prepare you for study at University. Learners who have completed a Level 3 course in IT or a related subject, who are looking to study a Higher Education programme locally to progress their career within this sector. Entry requirements Formal academic qualifications are not always necessary to enrol onto this qualification. The course is the equivalent to the first year of a degree, so a high level of commitment is required. The team at NCC will assess your aptitude on application. You may already have a Level 3 qualification in IT or a related field, or you may already be working in IT and be looking to upgrade your qualifications. You will also develop your employability skills and the professional skills required to gain a positive career. Units may include: Business Skills for e-commerce Computer Systems Employability and Professional Development Networking technologies You will also learn all about network security issues and how to set up an effective network, while ensuring the right measures are put in place to protect the network from any cyber security attacks. You will be learning about IT virtualisation and cloud computing. 18 Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) / Certificate in Education Professional Qualification 2 Years Part-time Daytime Who is the programme aimed at? Anyone wanting a route into a career in teaching or training. Studying part-time, you will develop the skills required to be an effective educator and trainer. Entry requirements If you are a PGCE applicant you should hold a UK first degree or equivalent and relevant work experience (where appropriate to the subject field). You must also hold qualifications at NVQ Level 3-4 in the subject area you teach, if this is different from that of your degree. If you are applying for the Cert. Ed course, you should have a HNC, CGLI Advanced, NVQ or equivalent at Level 3 or 4, HNC/HND or Advanced Diploma or other professional qualification. How is the programme assessed? Assessment takes place at the end of each module and takes the form of reports, presentations, essays, case studies and logs/journals, as appropriate. What would successful completion of this programme lead to? Learners can use their credits to go on to a top-up BA (Hons) in Education Studies at a number of local institutions and/or training in the lifelong learning sector (post-16). What does it cost? Visit You are required to be in paid employment, as a teacher or trainer, for a minimum of 100 hours (at least 50 hours in any one year) at a recognised training or educational establishment.
