4 WHAT KIND OF COURSE CAN I TAKE? At East Riding College, you can work towards a number of different types of higher education qualification. Some are part-time courses, some are full-time and some can be either. The qualifications outlined in this course guide fall into the types of qualification below. ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION This is a level three course to prepare people to take the step up to higher education. This will be of particular interest to adults who are returning to education after a break and who may not currently meet the academic entry criteria for higher education programmes. HIGHER NATIONAL CERTIFICATES AND DIPLOMAS These are work-related higher education courses which have more of a practical emphasis. The certificate is at level four and roughly the equivalent to the first year of a degree and the diploma is at level five and similar to the first two years of a degree. FOUNDATION DEGREES These are similar to degrees but involve more practical work and work experience. Foundation degree students often study subjects closely related to their current job, or one that they want to progress to. TOP-UP DEGREES As the name suggests, this course allows you to top up your foundation degree or higher national diploma to a full degree. They are the equivalent to the last year of a degree. DEGREES The best-known and most common higher education qualification. Honours degrees include the awarding of classifications of honours such as first, upper and lower second and third class. MASTERS A Masters degree is the most common post-graduate qualification which you can take after you have completed an honours degree or equivalent. It shows a high level of expertise in the studied field, and usually involves writing a thesis. TEACHER TRAINING These popular courses provide higher education qualification routes which will enable you to apply for QTLS (qualified teacher learning and skills) status. We run courses for people who are already teaching and those who are not, and for people with and without degrees. We work like a teacher training college and excel in turning industry specialists into teachers. Unlike other providers, we can arrange work placements and provide mentor support. 4

5 FURTHER EDUCATION AT LEVEL FOUR AND ABOVE Some courses in this guide are higher level (level four and above), but are not funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England and are therefore categorised as further education. These include very specialised professional qualifications like AAT courses. WHO DO WE WORK WITH? Our Access to Higher Education Diploma course is an entry qualification to a range of undergraduate programmes and degrees at local and national universities. The course has several pathways you can take, depending on the subject you plan to study at degree level, or the area of interest that you have in terms of your career. Each pathway prepares you for universitylevel study, covering key skills such as academic writing, research skills and referencing as well as exploring relevant units to the subject area. The course is fast paced and will normally be timetabled for approximately 15 hours per week, for the full academic year. Access students acquire the skills - and the confidence - to move successfully onto higher level study. Wendy Smith Class of 2017 Access to Health Science Wendy won student of the year and her tutors commended her on her evaluation of ideas, research skills and ability to make complex links in theory. I ve discovered my passion for psychology. I originally wanted to go into biomedical science but fell in love with psychology after the very first lesson. I was hooked - it was a light bulb moment. I would recommend returning to study to anyone. 14

38 TEACHER TRAINING AND EDUCATION Teacher Training and Education at East Riding College has the feel and approach of a teacher training college. There is a full range of courses to choose from, with routes to qualified teacher learning and skills status (QTLS). Teacher training courses are taught through a mixture of workshops, micro teaching sessions, taught lessons, lectures and independent learning. All of the courses are focussed on practical teaching and where applicable, the College will help you organise a suitable work placement. Sean O Callaghan Class of 2017 Pre-Service Professional Graduate Certificate in Education East Riding College was very welcoming. My tutors made me feel wanted and at ease. They understood that I was away from home and didn t know much about the area and they helped me get a placement. The course has improved my teaching practice and built my confidence as a teacher. I would recommend the College to anyone considering a PGCE, as there is always help at hand. I can safely say it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. 38

39 As well as job satisfaction from inspiring others and passing on your skills and expertise, teaching offers great employment prospects, competitive salaries and job security. 95% of newly qualified teachers were employed in a teaching role within six months of completing training.
